I have question - can anyone recommend an IKEA shelving system that a) is made of wood (ie non-detolf) b) is customisable c) has shelves tall / strong enough to hold titan figures and d) ability to add clear doors? Any help would be appreciated
^The first one that jumps to mind is the billy bookcase. Edgecrusher did a nice writeout about them on the previous page of this thread. I was watching NCIS Los-Angeles last weekend, when I saw what I want to do for my display cases. In the show they have a room where they store all of their weapons, etc: Those are the display cases I want to make, where the bottom 18 - 24 inches are drawers/cabinets for storing parts, documentation, figures not on display, whatever, then leave the remaining space for adjustable shelves for display... now I just need the house to put them in. just thinking about it, with as many versions of Megatron / Shockwave as I have, I probably could do a "gun" shelf quite easily between G1 Megatron, G1 reissue, Browning, Black G1 Reissue, WST, Classics, Henkei, Legends, MP-05, MP-05 Gold (both with FP Stock/silencer upgrade kits), MP-36, Apollyon, Shockwave, MP Shockwave, Quake wave and Legends Shockwave. Crap... that's 14 right there, and I think I'm missing a couple... oh yeah Sixshot, Hexatron... oh this could be dangerous.
I actually had a really similar idea. But then I realized I wouldn't have anywhere to put the gun shelf. I did, however, just end up mounting my MP Megatron to the wall. I think it looks pretty decent. But I would like dedicated display to MP Megs, G1 Megs, Henkei Megatron, Mp Shockwave, G1 Shockwave, and my Various Sixshots. Also, I don't think I ever posted in this thread (which I meant to), but I bought a Martha Stewart bookshelf from Home Depot, and made my own doors to put on them out of crown molding and plexiglass. I threw in some Dioder lights and it came out pretty good.
Wow, that looks really good. How hard was it to make the doors? Also, I especially love the Turtles on the wall.
Thanks. They weren't very difficult to make at all. It was just a matter of measuring the actual bookshelf, then cutting the crown molding to those measurements and then using a Miter Saw to get the 90 degree angle cuts on the crown molding. I then used wood glue to hold it together, spray painted it black, then took dimensions for plexiglass. Lowe's sold and cut the plexi glass to my specifications. Then I used a drill to put holes in the outskirts of the plexiglass, and screwed it into the glued/painted crown molding doors. Finally, I bought some hinges and drilled those into the doors and book shelf. I also installed a magnet latch to keep the doors in place and from swinging open at random. Took about 4 days to get it all done, but the results are pretty good. I have a 3 year old and a 5 year old, so I keep all my figures behind glass. When I bought that bookshelf and started putting things on there, my then 2 year old kept reaching and grabbing things of the shelf, knocking everything down. I quickly realized I'd need to install doors on the shelf to keep her little hands at bay.
I’m looking for some help for display options. I’m looking for more of a high end glass cabinet, four to four and a half feet wide, height-wise to fit a 9 foot ceiling. Current I’m using a glass table with some movie Primes on it and want to use that space for 3A, Flame Toys and stuff like that. Any suggestions? I also have two older glass cases at the back end of the room on either side of the window. I can go wider there, probably up to three and a half feet each way. Like to stay with glass and like to have a few more shelves than what I currently have. Any suggestion should on this one as well? Thanks in advance for the help!
Oooff… The only thing that comes into my mind personally is the professional siding cabinets that the die cast model stores that have on display or try Craigslist/Auction Places/Display Speciality stores that specializes on display cabinets... Other than that, I can't think of anything else right now.
You're probably looking for a professional grade display shelf. Four and a half feet of glass shelf is going to be heavy. You're going to need some pretty serious mounting hardware. You may have some luck with a custom glass fabricator.
These have potential - I've went for a (second hand) version of the 1m (w) x 2m (h) x 0.4 (d) model linked, replacing two detolfs, although as below it's still not quite wide enough to sit all five Gigapower Dinobots in side by side, based on a quick test There's a seller in the Glasgow area (Scotland, UK) that was selling off a bunch from a now-defunt showroom for £250 on the usual auction and second-hand sale sites (I'd been keeping an eye as I couldn't justify shelling out the full price) - just wish he had been selling some of the 1.2m width versions Weighs an absolutely stupid amount, so even if another seller does crop up with the wider model at an acceptable price I think I've already exhaused my wife's goodwill in terms of moving the thing upstairs.
I actually went into my Ikea in Coquitlam, B.C. and saw this. Idasen cabinet with sliding glass doors. You might get it for cheaper if its a display model or if someone is offloading theirs. List price is in Canadian Dollars here folks.
I'd love to see what the Milsbo looks like when filled up with Transformers. Anyone have this bad boy: MILSBO Glass-door cabinet - white - IKEA
My current set up is some military binder shelves that are modular boxes with a glass front overhead door that slides into the unit to allow you access to the contents. Every so often a unit in my state has some that they are scrapping and I can net them for the price of asking for them. A Combiner Wars Combiner stands effortlessly in these, so the only storage issues I have are my Titans, which are in a separate shelf anyway.
I posted a pic of the black version on page 14 and its like a double detolf. I'm thinking of getting one later this year as it costs $230 CDN and they only have it the two colours. I think that there is a double Detolf mod with TFs stuffed inside early in this thread. Edit: Go to page 7 for @olevelo's (post #113) and page 12 for @Therontsc's pic with the Ikea Norna (post #235) [Discontinued, however its has three shelves not four]. Page 9 (post #163) has @Starscream Gaga's collection on four shelves in a case like the Milsblo (not exactly). The price might be lowered down later in the year and I'm waiting for a different colour version as I have wood-like tone furniture in my room (Birch, Pine, Light Gray Oak).
Thanks for trying to help, but I was hoping to see the Milsbo in particular full of Transformers. The double Detolf mod is a different beast, since it still has the gaps between glass panels. The Milsbo has these gaps closed up nicely, but this also obscures the contents of the shelf somewhat. I might buy a couple of these soon anyway. If so, I'll post photos.
It's not quite "full of" as I like my displays leaner and cleaner: They're nice, I like them...I may try to get one more so I can pull some more figures out of the closet. Seems to have a little less dust protection vs Fabrikor as there's a very, very thin gap between the doors versus the overlap panel that Fabrikor has. I am currently housing my dinobots in my gray Fabrikor: And this may be useful to some of y'all, I made a somewhat to-scale comparision graphic with dimensions of those two lines from Ikea: (Left and center are Fabrikor, right is Milsbo. Big orange rectangle is TW Combiner sized, smaller orange vertical rectangle is FT-10 and then pinkish blocks are GP Dinos.) ((Not sure what I'm going to use if Unicron gets funded.))
Even though you get more display space widthwise, there's that annoying "double dutch door" pillar the obstructs the full view of the stuff that your displaying until you open the doors. Then you're going to re-shuffle the TFs so that they're not blocked and in full sight. If your not really OCD, then it's your call.
This is immensely helpful. Thank you so much! My basement man-cave flooded so I have to redo things anyway, and your awesome figure display has me feeling inspired. Oh, and I had the same thought about Unicron. I bet he'll need his own dedicated case. Or maybe a custom built altar.
Yarp, that's the issue with the cheaper options. I'll live with it for now but hopefully I'll be able to do a moducase-like setup when I move my office to the basement.
May I know where you guys mainly buy your shelves/cases that are not detolf? really looking forward to and my mom says we could buy one for some for my figures it'd be really nice. Does ikea just have detolfs or do they have others aswell? If they are custom made Is there a guide/tutorial that you followed? I'd appreciate it
Take a peek in the Ikea website and decide what you like. Look up Living Room Storage and take a look at all the options here (Bookshelf, Cabinets and displays, Wall shelves, Shelf units, etc).
