I personally would not like a free to play game simply because that would imply that the single player component would be lackluster. I don't think I have ever seen a free to play game that had a single player story as compelling as, let's say, fall of cybertron. I really do hope it has a price tag solely because of this reason, but hey, anything can happen

    UPDATE:

Daniel Ahmad, who is a Senior Anaylist and covers developments in regards to the video game industry, has came out and tweeted this:
    1BE81174-C8D9-48E9-85BE-23173554A836.jpeg

Nothing really new here. This tweet relates to an announcement Leyou made at ChinaJoy, an entertainment conference that goes from August 2nd - 5th.

This is the first time the company has publicly confirmed they are working on the Transformers game. Here is more indication of it being free-to-play. And apparently, they might be sticking to the name “Transformers Online.”

Here's hoping it's not a Chinese exclusive like the last Transformers Online game, and that the server's remain active for a long period of time.

I don’t think it will. Certain Affinity is a Western studio that works on Western games like Halo and Call of Duty. It would be a drastic change if they started working on a game that wasn’t English.

Leyou itself though, is a Chinese company. But their games aren’t exclusive to certain areas (thankfully).

This thing where people keep naming their product the same thing as somebody before is also confusing as this is the third Transformers game with the name “Transformers Online”. Same with the title “Robots in Disguise”, but I can pass up on that one.

    Well:

Creative Assembly announces Total War collectible card game - but it's China-only for now

To be fair, that game is published by NetEase, but still...

I’m also hoping that the game is both current and next generation consoles, to help maintain the momentum of the game, and that by going free to play, it doesn’t get destroyed by other f2p shooting games, like Warframe, Apex Legends, Fortnite and more...

It needs something besides the Transformers brand to really stand out.

It also looks like their busy:

It's busy times for Creative Assembly. It's working on nine projects including a "major new IP" - an unannounced tactical team-based shooter.

There’s definitely some hot competition, no doubt. I would imagine that Xbox One, PS4, and PC are safe bets for now.

Yeah. It needs that great replay value. Even though I’m not entirely down for MMO’s I’d play if it was good.

I'm alright with a free to play game, as long as there is no microtransactions. Certain Affinity, please don't be like the scummy EA and Activision.

As great as that sounds, a free to play game without microtransactions sounds unlikely, since they'll need to find some way to earn money from the game.

The alternative to microtransactions would be an optional or mandatory fee like DC Universe Online and Fortnite, or they have advertisement like in NBA 2K19, although neither seems likely to be implemented.

I just hope the game is not a grind, and doesn't have anything to try and limit the customers' entertainment with the game, like having a regenerate energy bar which recharges over a period of time.

Purchasable currency is 99% guaranteed in any free to play game. It simply is how these companies make money. As long as they limit these currencies to purchasing cosmetics only, or to purchase characters quicker while still making sure that purchasing characters with game-time is still attainable, I don't see any issue with it. Look at rainbow six siege or fortnite. Hell rainbow six is a paid game, and it still requires real grind if you choose to purchase operators solely with the in-game currency and not with it's purchasable currency. Season passes are highly common in online-only games.

That's why I really wish they'd just make the game a paid one, at maybe 50-60$, mostly because it'd be more likely to have a campaign if it were so, but it would also mean that they'd be able to profit from the purchase of the game itself and rely less on microtransactions to make money.
