He can't make the production deadlines with all his shows. In order to ensure quality they are putting it on Hulu so they make sure it's as well written and has good production value as it can.

Adrianne Palicki (Kelly) and Scott Grimes (Gordon) got married in May.

She just filed for divorce. Good thing they have time between now and filming. Awkward

Then, he's definitely the problem. This is his third, I believe. Possibly fourth. 2 months has to be a record. Either he's an incredible douchecanoe or he's a habitual cheater. Either way, marriage ain't for him. Clearly.

He might be a piece of crap, but she shouldn't have married someone with 2, possibly 3 under his belt already. The trend is against her.

I don't see how they can top last season.

    Yikes.

On a show with such a tight cast, this could be really awkward. It's not like there's enough others around to prevent them from ever interacting like with Jerome Flynn and Lena Headey on GoT. Sitting on the bridge together is already staple for the main crew.

    Eesh, what a mess.

Guess I'm the only one seeing this Hulu move as being the writing on the wall that this show is most definitely toast after S3 eventually shows up. They can spin this all they want, but the bottom line is that Fox basically DID cancel it and McFarlane completely bit off more than he can chew... and write... and star in... and commit to.

    Oh, absolutely.

They're a match made in Hell, sadly.

Actually it probably moved to Hulu because Disney wants something to compete with the Star Trek streaming shows. Merchandise is juat ramping up for the Orville and the comic just debuted. This ship ain't slowing down yet.

But that's the thing; it did slow down. Substantially. Some people still like the show, absolutely, but viewership was consistently down throughout S2 to the point that it was even speculated that the show was cancelled WHILE still airing its season. Then it got caught in cancellation/renewal limbo for months after it wrapped.

I hope S3 is amazing, because whether it's the network or McFarlane himself that cancels it, I guarantee it will be the last season.

Orville had one of those long midseason breaks didn't it? That usually tanks the ratings. It also started much later then normal shows.

I think that hurt it most, it didn't have a fall start and instead started in January.

I know it's a major passion project for Seth, but it may not hurt the show that much if they took some of the burden off him as well, he's got so much on his plate and according to a Google talk or something I saw, they don't even start shooting until the entire season is planned out, that it may help with production turnaround as well.

Now, since they are leaving broadcast tv, how willing are they to go more coarse in their language? Cuz I doubt that anyone will get naked in that show.

This seems a little doomsday prophetic for my tastes.

I could, however, see them producing season 3, then taking a two or more year hiatus to let Seth settle himself a bit more before coming back. This seems a pretty common trend for modern streaming shows. And for whatever reason, it does seem to work for them. Though I would love to see it turn back around more quickly in the Orville's case.

Since we're all sci-fi fans in this thread, anybody catch Pandora yet? The first two episodes are setting up some magnificent world-building for a new sci-fi on network TV, and the characters are shockingly likable. And nobody's black and white good/bad. Even those they choreograph as bad up front have reasons as things play out. It's really coming together as a new favorite for me and the wife while we wait for the Orville to come back.

I like it as it currently is. I don't think it's necessary to change a working formula. A lot of people are turned off by the content and the language in Star Trek Discovery.

Another good example... Designated Survivor on ABC. It was picked up by Netflix and has now been officially cancelled. (Just this morning, I believe.)

It went from who done it thriller to political intrigue to family drama and handled all of that, deftly. It went to Netflix and they started dropping f-bombs every chance they could and people are screwing left and right like rabbits. They even had two dudes going at it, graphically, I might add. All of it, the language, the Straight and Gay sex scenes, nudity, none of it added TO the show, it detracted from it and turned viewers away. (I'm a fair person, it was great that all the camps were getting representation, but not in that kind of detail.) You could tell it was tacked on simply because it could be, not because it needed to be.

The Gay relationship wasn't even fleshed out properly, they could've done so much more with it, made the audience really feel where they're coming from, but it was gratuitous. So was the language and the storyline about periods. (I'm not joking, there was a couple of episodes involving that and they turned it into a joke at times. Like, WTF?)

It wasn't the same Designated Survivor. STD isn't the same Star Trek, and I don't want The Orville becoming something it doesn't need to be.

I want more of what we got, not added garbage just because they can. Impress me, make a compelling series, even without restrictions and uphold the quality. I'll be supremely impressed.

Thank goodness. Like I said upthread, I'm glad Orville went to Hulu as the show won't be manipulated into something it wasn't meant to be. Designated Survivor took a horrible beating after switching to Netflix. The shoehorned and complete non-fleshed out storytelling just to bring up every possible divisive topic of the day without actually addressing the reality of living within one of those issues was ridiculous. Having actual real testimonials and a real support group shoot footage for the show was really cool, BUT they did it in the most ham-fisted, over the top way. The cursing I didn't really care about, but they really needed to have some competent editors go over those scripts before they shot so they could make the plots a little more character driven and at least *SLIGHTLY* more compelling.

The way they did Hannah this season was super stupid.

I know Disney is majority owner of Hulu now and can get a little heavy handed with the modern identity politics, but I'm also hopeful that the reason they wanted the Orville is Seth's rather subtle digs at current issues with the show already. He's done an excellent job of addressing real, current issues without destroying character arcs or plots to do it. And nobody spent time randomly tossing in real issues just to make a joke out of it like the period sequence on Designated Survivor. Possible the worst handling of a puberty plotline ever shown on a television program.
