So Takara is getting this too despite it being not even a done deal that it gets made? Odd. Why not just make the campaign be open to Japan too?

    Ahahahaha... NO.

Check around. Large toys like these NEVER get knockoffs. The sheer amount of material makes them not worth it for the KO maker, analyzing and reproducing this many parts. Hot Toys Marvel/DC figures of the large scale costs about the same as Unicron will, have you ever seen one knocked off?
The only reason Predaking was knocked off is because they could release them one by one as Voyager sized toys.
No, if you want Unicron, crowdfund it now. Hasbro is doing something I think pretty much no other big company has done, like Mattell or Bandai - making something that they could never sell at retail and that is I feel ultimately costing them more than their income on it will be. You bet damn well I will support them. This thing is amazing, and I want it bad. I don't live in the USA but I have a Hasbropulse premium account and an american friend's address so I am gonna pre-order two for a friend and myself for sure.

I dunno about... lbs? (It's pounds, no? Why do you guys write it as LBS? Why not PDS for PounDS? Weird system... ) But a friend of mine has Terminus Giganticus, the third party MP sized Omega Supreme who is just a bit shorter than Unicron will be, and he measured it after hearing the news... Unicron is 8.6 kilograms, Terminus Giganticus -despite having die-cast is only 5 kg!!!

Hot Toys' "The Bat" (from Dark Knight Rises) costs 190.000 HUF - 653$, more than Unicron will.
The Bat Deluxe - 1:12 méretarányú exkluzív gyűjtői szett - Hot Toys
75 x 42 x 26.5 cm so it is actually smaller than Unicron, too.
And generally I see the regular Hot Toys human action figures being sold for about half of this amount, around 325$.
Compared to that, the world's biggest TF and looking this close to the movie design? I am gonna pay for it in a heartbeat.

When you sign on to the crowdfunding campaign, you pledge to pay Hasbro $575 on August 31st, contingent on the campaign being successful. If the campaign's a dud, then no charge happens.

It's just like pre-paying for a pre-order (through a reputable retailer...). If the item gets cancelled for whatever reason, you don't still have to pay for it.

No, because I have a respect and understanding for the sheer amount of abject work that it takes in order to produce art, a tangible product or intellectual property. I have utmost respect for anyone that has a job, but there's a special respect I hold for people that go in every day and are told to create something from nothing, be it art, literature, or a consumer good.

I don't know what you or anyone else does, but nearly all of my friends and most of my business acquaintances are people that walk in the door each day and if they fail to create something new, develop a new idea or simply put virtual pen to paper and draft, then they don't get paid. I personally work 9+ hours a day, six days a week researching and writing, as does my spouse. I sacrificed decades of my life to be able to do it and frankly I get paid well for it - as does my wife and immediate peer group.

It's fine if you think this thing is "overpriced". Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Maybe it is in fact greedy to ask $600 for this thing, but when I buy a figure, I don't just see a thing that I want for cheap, I see hundreds if not thousands of man hours put into it just so I can have a perfect, crystallized idea of what my inner child remembers things look like as opposed to the chunky bricks I got.

Pursuit of these toys isn't all bragging rights and having the biggest and the best, or getting the most for less. It's about getting what I want because I've earned it, and congratulating and providing incentive to someone else to make more. Perhaps one day they'll get to a point where I can't afford something and I won't buy it and, absent some huge glaring issue I will gladly bow out as simply something I can no longer afford. It used to happen a lot before I had a relatively high income, but my solution was to simply not buy and bless those that can.

In short: I value artistic creativity and the work that goes into it highly. To me, this Unicron is in fact art. Pooh pooh my sentiment as you like, but if someone is going to pay me stupid money for what I do, I have no qualms in paying stupid money for doing something far more creative and complex than I ever could.

Edit: Sorry if this comes across as grouchy - I generally respect you and your opinions, but this might just be one of those things where we disagree.

Kinda? I mean, MMC's Predaking, Warbotron's Bruticus and GToy's Devastator got KOed to high heaven, hell, and back again. That said, they came in parts as opposed to a single monolithic piece so there's that. Still, historically, being "large" doesn't necessarily mean you're immune from the KO treatment.

TakaraTomy's release is an extension of the HasLab campaign. Between the two, if it doesn't hit the 8000 goal, it doesn't get made.

That is basically what this is doing. This isn't separate from what we can tell, but the local Japanese market access for the same production run. Hopefully Hasbro will clarify if the Japanese numbers count towards the 8k needed during the campaign.

...Does it matter if you'll only be showing its front?

Also, holy cow, that's a lot of panels by the lower legs. But hey, if it's so Unicron can keep his silhouette and considering he turns into a freaking sphere, I'm more willing to forgive it.

(Not like I'm getting this anyway.)

The safest assumption based off the translated portion of Takara's announcement would be that TTM orders are going to be included in the HasLab preorder campaign. This isn't it's own separate effort by Takara to release their own version of the figure but rather a way for Japan to get in on the crowdfund since it is otherwise an NA promotion.

People keep saying this and I'm not really sure what point it's making. Could you enlighten me, please? I keep thinking it means that the person it's directed at should back the figure, but very few people actually can.
