This is pretty much my view. I was very happy with my GC, between Metroid Prime, the Resident Evil games (Zero, REmake, and RE4), Soul Calibur 2 with Link...
A lot of people forget RE4 came out on GC first, and was a system-selling killer app.

Only Nintendo console I've bought since then is the Wii, and after a period of playing it, it sat unused for 2 years before I sold it. Haven't bothered with a Wii U, 3DS, or Switch. So, I'd say the GC was also for me the last time I was 100% satisfied with a Nintendo console.

I worked in the video game section of Toys R Us between '03-'04, and I think I sold more GCs than any other console (other than handhelds). Of course, that may just be because of the clientele; most gamers who would buy a PS2 or XBOX wouldn't get it at TRU :D

GCN was on the same power level as PS2. Hell the elusive Japanese Q model could play DVDs even.

It was the last time I remember that a Nintendo console could play 3P games on the same level as the others. It may not have "won", but it is a great console.

That really depends on what you were playing, I guess, and what other console you're comparing it to. My experience was mostly the opposite. Capcom's games that were designed for the Cube and ported to PS2, for instance, were technically superior on the Cube and didn't have Xbox versions to compare. Sega's arcade and Dreamcast ports may have been better on Xbox than on Gamecube, but they tended to be better on Cube than PS2. But if a lot of the (IMO disposable) multi-platform games from EA or whatever were worst on GameCube, that wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Well, I'll put it this way: if they (who?) said it wasn't a big deal, they were right. The gaming industry had bigger fish to fry at the time, between the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox, both of which were great competition and offered a much larger and more diverse game lineup.

That said, the GameCube and its games are by no means bad, now that the dust has settled. I strongly recommend you try it out for yourself instead of letting someone online tell you what to think of it.

Alot of Sega's games were designed for the Gamecube, with the Xbox around the corner. Which resulted in the PS2 versions of some Sega games to be piss-poor, due to framerate issues.

You can also put it this way. Worldwide Sales.

GC did less than the Xbox by 2 million but got blown away by PS2.

Wii sold roughly 18 million more than the 360 and the PS3. Would that mean the 360 and PS3 were that bad??? Would that mean the PS3 was really that bad since it wasnt even close to PS2 sales, roughly only little more than half the sales, and it also sold less than PS???

Sometimes its how you want to precieve it. Since that person who told you it was bad didnt specify why it was bad, for all we know it could be cause he just didnt like the system.

i thought re4 played the best on the cube. maybe its just because i played it first on the cube, but i have it for wii/pc and had it for the ps2 and the exp just wasnt/isnt the same..... re4 on cube was definitely a special time in me gaming lifetime.. re4 is still one of my top 5 games of all time...

It was a huge step up from N64 in terms of popular genre representation and third party support. But still easily the weakest console of its generation.

As much as I love the Dreamcast, I think the GameCube fares far better. In terms of hardware, in terms of longevity, in terms of market penetration, and in terms of game library.

The GameCube wasn't really a failure - it turned a nice profit for Nintendo.

From a developer standpoint, the machine was nice to work with, if lacking in processing grunt. Nintendo provided a nice straight forward development environment, and even included CodeWarrior. So there was no additional cost - compared to PS2 where you had to buy a compiler license from SN and provide your own IDE/editor or use the dev-kit directly (it was a Linux box with a PS2 development card) which was just horrendous.

The hardware was pretty straight forward to work with too. Nintendo really thought about how games were to be made and what could be done to make that easier - something that sort of got lost from the Wii until the Switch came around.

The biggest issue wasn't that the games were bad or that the hardware was bad - but rather people saw the PS2 as cheap (for the time) DVD player as well as something to play games on. And this really drove consumers to the PS2 and left the GC floundering in its own wake. There was perhaps a bit of a perception problem, too - the GC looked a bit like a toy and people did wonder if they even wanted the black variant sitting in their living room. I didn't care - I had my purple GC sitting in the living room of the house I shared. I remember coming home to find my Dutch housemate in fits of laughter playing Super Monkey Ball - she saw the game sitting on the shelf and decide to see what it was all about - how many non-gamers would be so easily drawn to the other consoles at the time?

No it wasn't, it was really underrated and only now is it starting to feel like people are finally starting to appreciate it, especially with Gamecube games(unfortunately) skyrocketing in price

Try getting a copy of MGS:Twin Snakes for a sane price - GameCube games had a fairly limited production run, but the run for that title was TINY which has pushed up the price even more.

And before anybody asks, my copy is not up for sale :)

The Gamecube was considered a bad system? I love my Gamecube, I still play a few games on it. Namely Resident Evil 4.

This. To this date, Metroid Prime is one of the best games I've ever played.

Terrible, no. I never really played GC other than the display models in stores. It seemed fine. I just had no interest in the games and the controller felt awkward. I just became less interested in Nintendo since N64. Nintendo has done its own thing since the SNES.

To me Nintendo went weird around the time of N64 at least controller wise and has been weird since. I look at NES/SNES controllers and they are easy to pick up. Genesis was easy to use. PS ones are easy to use as are XBox. Then with Nintendo you got the trident N64 with joystick that looks like you need 3 hands. Then you get the odd looking GC one. Then flail your arms with Wii/WiiU, and Switch.

Everyone else is going DVD/BD style disks. Nintendo sticks with cartridges, then mini disks, now basically SD cards. Nintendo just likes to innovate. That is why we get weird crap like Virtual Boy. It is trying something new. Not always good, but new.

Nintendo is not my thing anymore. I'm not a big gamer these days. Very little appeals to me. Wii looked for for a while, but nothing I must play. Switch looks good, but not a lot of games appeal to me.

I saw a copy going for $185 on Amazon - and I'm willing to bet the prices aren't any lower on eBay.

Think that's bad? Skies of Arcadia and Gotcha Force practically demand an organ
