Terrible timing, as usual Hasbro.

Because many collectors have their money tied up on MP-44, MP Hound, MP Bumblebee, Snake Mountain, Omega Supreme, and every other SDCC and Powercon exclusive, a lot of collectors may not be able to buy Unicron, even on a credit card.

Hasbro Pulse should have waited until March or April of next year to announce it.

On the other hand, if most of the engineering and tooling is done and it fails, would Hasbro release a dumb down version at retail? Even though they say they won't.

Not to mention, Asian collectors are probably going to want this more than American collectors, so would Takara Tomy ever have access to the mold?

 

Which is weird because that seems to be a misunderstanding of how Kickstarter works if it's an attempt to bring it in house.

Traditional crowdfunding isn't moonshot projects with wealthy patrons.

It's a mix of patrons with tiered rewards for implausible projects.

A typical Kickstarter is half whales and half guppies with the central product being offered at roughly the average (mean) donor contribution.

I would like to see them try something like a $45 all-the-bells-and-whistles Quintesson.

Also: I feel like Unicron is a bit of a cheat because this absolutely would sell as a retail Titan.

If they wanted to do a 27 inch Optimus Prime with a team of G.I.Joes, I feel like that would be riskier and therefore more justifiable. Safe Kickstarters tend to fail because they feel like overpriced preorders. You need something that seems weird and daring, at least to your core backers.

Anyone who doesn’t buy this might as well sell their entire collection. Because if you don’t have Unicron then you’ve got nothing! Nobody is going to care about your Fort Max centerpiece.

(The sad thing is, I honestly can’t decide if I’m kidding or not. You know from this point on, if you see a picture of someone’s collection online, the first thing you’ll look for is to see if there’s a Unicron. “That guy’s collection is amazing! Well, you know, it’s not Unicron amazing, but it’s ok I guess.”
