Ah, see...you said it, "allegedly." There wasn't any proof of it, and those "historians" that wrote the suggestion that she did were really biased against the thought that a woman could have ran the empire as effectively as she did. So...take that with a grain of salt if you will. Besides, there were emperors in China that used women as not just assassins, but also bodyguards. If women were not to be trusted, strong, nor can run anything...they wouldn't even have been charged to protect the most important person in the land. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyhoo, back to Mulan. I think I have a blu ray copy of Mulan (2009). It was pretty good. Though admittedly, I might somehow be comparing Disney's take to that.
I read somewhere that in at least one telling of the legend, Mulan went to war with her father’s blessing because she beat him in a sword fight. So there’s one way to change up the script.
Yeah, and there's another where her father was sick/too old, and she didn't want her father to go so she took his place. Yet in another, no mention of health or what you said, but rather the father was worried he'd be conscripted because all he has is two daughters and one young boy not old enough to fight. The stories tend to treat her more of a legend (with...differing details depending on which version you're reading) than an actual living person in history.
And learning from my long experience with trailers heavily misrepresenting their movies, I'll reserve my judgment until I see entire movie itself.
That actually looks really good for a Disney remake. I don't just feel like I'm watching live-action versions of shots from the cartoon. This is the reason I pass on movies like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. I'd rather just go back and watch the cartoons. They basically seem like the same things, but with creepy-looking CGI genies and clocks and candlesticks. You can capture things like that better in traditional animation. This actually looks like someone's vision for a Mulan movie, not just a calculated remake to bring back iconic imagery in a lame way. Consider me interested.
It looks really pretty. The teaser went as I expected, they went over some iconic lines from the original to hook people in and hit their nostalgia button. But, again, I know people are going to cry hallelujah because it’s not doing a bunch of shots for shot like Aladdin and Lion King. I’m not saying people shouldn’t praise that, but I mean, you can tell I’m tired of people shitting on my movie for that. Anyway, it looks good and I’ll definitely check it out.
Honestly, this is what I find intriguing about it. So many of the trailers for these Disney remakes just feel like a live-action version of the cartoon. They're all money shots pulled straight from iconic moments. There's nothing inherently interesting about a photorealistic Beast, or seeing the Aladdin genie played by a real person. Especially when exaggerated animation is a big part of what breathed life into those characters. I also don't find weaker versions of the iconic songs interesting. Seeing most of the remake trailers just makes me want to watch the cartoon again. This looks like someone's vision for a Mulan movie, not "Disney's Live-Action Mulan".
I’d love if they brought back the “Mulan’s Decision” track from when she cut her hair because come on, that was badass. I still find Mulan’s motivation to join the army so she can save her elderly father from certain death really inspiring, btw. Obviously that’s not her only motivation, but that’s still something that legitimately inspired me. That said, I was really looking forward to see how they pulled off Beast, because he has such an awesome design in the original that I was really excited to see what they’d do. Of course nobody really wants the exact same thing, but I would’ve still paid to see that thing translated almost perfectly into live action.
So they went with the sick father route. Ok. I'll wait for other trailers. Might actually go see this one.
From the trailer, this doesn't look too bad. No over-reliance on none-too-convincing CGI. It does seem straightforward, which can be a good thing or a bad thing (lacking that Disney magical spark?). Still too early to tell from a single teaser trailer.
You know what? I'm down for this one. It's not just a nostalgia pandering copy of the animated version with a few changes here and there, it's a brand new take on the story. In fact it seems closer to the original legend. I hope Disney does more like this.
Looks like the snow fight, battle on the roof and the bad guys hawk are still in this. I'm waiting for mushu. They didn't have him in this trailer but he should be in the full trailer. I want to see what he looks like. Edit--looks like the teaser is getting attacked for no songs or mushu. It's a teaser guys. ‘Mulan’ Trailer Makes Big Changes; Fans React To Missing Mushu, No Singing
I was fairly confident that I read somewhere that Mushu had been replaced with a phoenix. And that since this is being shot and approached as a historical epic, the singing is not going to be present but the songs will inform the score for their appropriate scenes. In fact given the tone displayed by the teaser the only song I could see them using verbatim is "A Girl worth fighting for" because its a marching song and those have been around since........fuck, for as long as there have been armies that march.
