More/newer versions of a character just means more opportunities to army-build.

...unless they're versions of Optimus or Bumblebee. Those are like cockroaches.

    Two words: Viking Funeral.

Nah, not really. My collection is pretty focused, so I only pick up things I want based on reviews I see or extreme sales. So doubling up on a character is seldom. When it does happen, if the initial toy was really worthy of purchasing, I keep it, head canon it into a spark-sibling. Otherwise (as in the case of amazing sale purchases that I probably would never have purchased otherwise *cough* PotP Starscream *cough*), they become custom fodder.

Keep them. One of my regrets is selling my old G1 Toys when the Bay movie came out. They were my pride and joy as a kid. Now I only sell stuff off if I don't like it or don't like the property anymore. I love my Transformers new and old and will keep them as long as I collect them. Some stuff I keep in storage though or displayed in a more hidden location.

Buy them for cheap on Ebay and repurpose them into other characters.

Some I keep, but they get retired to storage. Others I sell if the new ones make them completely obsolete.

Usually keep them and headcanon reasons for multiple bodies if I cant repurpose them. Exceptions being the old Universe Ultra Onslaught, silverbolt, and power glide. They were sold. I still love the old classics astrotrain, meanwhile I dislike the TR version as that wasnt very astroy. Definitely a better sentinel prime. That one may be repurposed as well.i will be getting the leader if the video reviews look good and it might just be a cool toy

If I replace a character I would plan on selling the previous version, then eventually forget. Which reminds me: anyone interested in a Japanese Legends Arcee (minus the pink gun) or TR Bumblebee? How about TR Powermaster Prime with two right backdoor ramps from the Siege on Cybertron set? Never decided which Shockwave I prefer between TR and Legends. Considered getting WFC Shockwave but it's just not in my budget at this time unless he hangs around long enough to go on clearance, and even then I would still keep one of the smaller versions.

As for WFC Astrotrain, I'll stick with the TR release because I loved that line. Head/Titanmasters is my favorite gimmick so that wins out over the more G1ey space choo-choo.

AT for Siege is his "pre Earth" :lol  version. The TR/Legends is his post 2005/2010 form if you follow the JP{ fiction so you're safe to get both.

I used to display them alongside older versions. Since Generations introduced unified scale though, the unscaled figures are boxed up, and the 1:35 scaled figures are displayed alongside each other.

They become repurposed as lesser/other named characters.

More than likely sell them and then wish I hadn't after they get next to impossible to find at a good price. J/k.

Honestly I haven't been collecting long enough for that to happen, and I am one of those 'I have more than one version of that character' people. And that's only true of... three characters in my collection.

If/when I cross that bridge, I'll more than likely keep it or customize it/use it for parts for customs.

Honestly, before Studio Series happened, this hadn't even happened to me very often. To be fair, I have a strong preference for more obscure characters and redecos, so a lot of what I like doesn't get many releases in the first place. (There haven't been multiple Dai Atlas or G2 Electro, for example).

When it does happen though, what I do varies from toy to toy. Sometimes the two are different enough that I keep both (United Thunder Megatron, Legends G2 Megatron). If the old one has a really good aftermarket value, I'll probably sell it. If not, I'll probably send it to goodwill. A 8 year old common deluxe isn't worth the hassle selling, and where I live the shipping costs end up killing most sales too.

I find a way to display both or all versions on the shelf, my collection is more focused on characters so I'm totally fine having more then one version of characters especially those that are my favorites.

Since my display / storage space is limited, when I buy a better version of a character, I put the older version up for sale or trade.

I keep them because Transformers are unique in that it's not just a new figure of the same character, but one with a different conversion. I have a video game WFC/FOC shelf that TR Astrotrain would look decent on. I also have a shelf for alternate versions of CHUG characters.
