Ok just waiting for Child’s Play to start. Toy Story was again fantastic. Good comedy, tons of heart. Beautiful film. Pixar brought their A game once again. Huge heart felt ending. New characters were fantastic. Spoiler: Spoiler i was shocked over all there was no villain. Gabby Gabby wasn’t malicious. Once you heard her side it was understandable. Loved Duke Caboom. Keanu was pretty funny. Ducky and Bunny were hilarious. Loved the unicorn wanting to get Bonnie’s dad arrested... then the RV bit. Big smile on my face. This was beautiful. Was it needed? No, but so glad they did. 9.5/10
Well, 5 minutes into this movie and the flashback to how Bo Peep was lost already made me teary-eyed. Damn you Lasseter, you still know how to pull those heartstrings! This was great. Amazing, even. I would not say on part with Toy Story 2 but easily as good as 3. Every character got something to do, the new characters were all fun and memorable, the plot was relatively grounded to a smaller place compared to the previous ones, but still entertaining, and it had a really good message that it slowly built up. Honestly the ending decision made me surprised at first, then I realized how subtly all the movie indicated Woody's choice towards this. And I am totally OK with it, it was a happy ending for everyone. Even the villain - not a surprise villain this time thankfully - was relatable, and unlike Lotso or Pete, got redeemed and found happiness. Oh and of course, Bo stole the show. If there ever was a way to make a pre-existing female character badass, Pixar knows how to do it without it feeling forced. She was a complex character though, and it wasn't just independence or not wanting to be an owned toy that motivates her. I also loved the Polly Pocket character... and chuckled at the different Kombat Karl variants. The snow jacket one looked like Snow Job! Poor guy, still waiting for that high five that never came. I am sort of glad Pixar never chose to update the human designs - I am fine with this style, whether technology could do better or not. And probably this means the story is over - unless they do prequel shorts like they did with the few they released before. I am all for that... I almost forgot Keanu voiced Duke Kaboom? Would have been nice to hear... sadly, like with most kids movies, no cinema plays this in english here. Gonna have to wait for the DVD releases with that, but the hungarian dub was mostly without glaring errors. If I have one problem with the movie, it's how... careless toys get as these movies go on. Several times humans could have easily seen them move, something they rarely did before, and the fake badger was a bit too much. Though this was balanced out by the incredibly hilarious fake attack scenes as imagined by Bunny and Ducky... Was not horribly dark like most movies I watched in 3D. I could only catch a 3D show on time, that's the only reason I chose it. Honestly like with every 3D movie after Avatar, I quickly even forgot I was watching 3D, my eyes simply adjust to the depth. Also I wonder if anyone noticed the Battlesaurs cameo (the lunchbox in the school)
Spoiler At the end of the credits, Snow Job Kombat Karl got his high five from Duke Caboom. The dude only had to wait a whole movie
I felt it was rather different... Spoiler It's that there comes a time in the life of even the most loyal person where they need to consider whether they have not sacrificed personal happiness on the altar of duty? I liked the constant reminders too that Woody was no longer needed in the aspect he played when he was Andy's #1 toy - where he was the leader of the gang. He was a latecomer to Bonnie's collection, and clearly Dolly - the rag doll - played that role just as long as Woody played his. He was also not played with as much -understandable a girl would play with Jessie more. And Bonnie kept forgetting him too. And then Woody helped not just Bo, but also inspired Duke for the jump, and then did a sacrifice to help Gabby-Gabby get a new owner and helped her later too. He did not really find a new calling - he was always helping others find the best in themselves before - but now Bo helped him realize he can do this here for other toys, AND be happy with the woman he loves, too. I found this ending really heartwarming. If they continue the movies, I wonder if it would be a prequel. We learn that Woody is VERY old - manufactured in 1955! Clearly he had several owners before Andy. I would be curious to what his life was before... and how he never heard of the TV show and franchise built around him. Or do they explain that somewhere in Toy Story 2? I need to rewatch these movies... Just bought all but the third on BR discounted, anyway... He did? I did not see that! I have to check a CAM version to see this. I did not wait to the very end of the credits - there were barely 10 people in the theatre and I was the last one out, I did not feel like making the cleanup crew wait.
Enjoyed it a lot. Spoiler The ending probably hit me harder than Toy Story 3 given we've gotten to see Woody and Buzz's whole friendship now from beginning to end. If I had some complaints it would probably the other members of the Toy gang don't really get much to do and even Buzz feels kind of sidelined (though I guess they haven't much of an idea of what to do with Buzz since the first film). I think a sequel, if they must do one, with Buzz getting a central arc could be interesting.
I would kill to get a movie based around the canceled Disney TS3 where Buzz gets recalled and they go to Taiwan and meet his replacement. Though that wouldn’t make as much sense now that the official TS3 established a good ten years or so to have passed.
I guess you could have it chronologically take place between the second and third films sometime during the ten year gap. Just saying it as a possibility.
Although them ending up in Taiwan is highly implausible. The first three take place in the same city. "Old" Buzz being sent to a more local place while the gang meets the yet-to-be-shipped to stores "New" Buzz while trying to rescue him would work better.
If they do a Toy Story 5, would you want the old toys back or a new generation of toys? I don't see it really working either way. If you do old gang, it has to either be (a) kid Andy years, (b) pre Toy Story 4, (c) or you are missing characters post Toy Story 4, OR (d) you go new kid and all new characters thus starting from scratch and people just want to old ones again. New toys with a new kid has more potential. How many toy lines go away and come back redesigned? You could do new redesigned Buzz with a different voice actor. Smaller, sleaker, wifi interactive, etc.. Heck finally put a Transformer type figure in one of these. Add pro wrestler figures. A Power Ranger. Heck instead of it being a little kid, it could be an adult collector. Add in anime figures. Have a samurai one that speaks Japanese. Add more classics toys like a He-Man or Skeletor. Or Ninja Turtle. Heck make it mutant kung fu iguanas or something. Picasso, Rembrant, warhol, and Banksy. I do ultimately think no more. This was a fantastic film. Three ended on a perfect note, but this was a fantastic encore. If they do anything TS related, do shorts or specials. But do it as side characters like Duke Caboom or Ducky/Bunny.
Yeah, would have been cool. I always assumed the recall would have also served as an explanation for why Buzz (and other toys in his line like Zurg) think they're real. Maybe we could have gotten to see other toys in the Buzz Lightyear toyline like Zurg and others. A Transformers/Voltron-like toy actually does pop in one of the shorts. Though I'd think it be hilarious if an actual Hasbro-licensed Autobot or Decepticon toy showed up in the movie but since it's a toy it can't transform itself automatically and needs help to do it.
I actually ended up liking the direction the film took despite going in with lower expectations. I liked the new characters pretty well, and found the contradictions of Gabby-Gabby as a antagonist pretty refreshing. I also can't help marvel at the animation of some things like the cat's introduction and the commercials. But at the same time definitely ready to close this franchise out, so please, no 5th movie. Spoiler Also can't think of better final words for this franchise. "How am I alive?? "I don't know."
