Pretty much most Hispanics have heard of the Cucuy. My younger sister and my cousins in my age group were told by our parents that if we misbehave, the Cucuy will come and eat us.

As a teen, my aunt told me that the Cucuy is similar to the Boogeyman.

It pretty much scared the living daylights of us kids and now we continue the legacy to the new generations family members.

In Lake Tahoe it is said there is a lake monster.

The Winchester Mystery Mansion is supposed to be haunted.

@MetalRyde My boyfriend said that his grandma tried to scare him and his bro into good behavior with the Cucuy when he was little. He said he used to wanna meet it so he could beat it up. XD

Yup, the Mexican Boogeyman. Heard the stories as a kid. And growing up I never once heard of La Llorona. So that must be some made up Hollywood bullshit.

Actually the legend of La Llorona existed many many decades before the movie was made (which I heard sucked).

My dad's mom would tell my dad and his siblings as children the story of La Llorona and my dad is 81 now.

Losts of myths and legends from around the world are made into movies. One just needs to look up info to see what is made up Hollywood stuff and which are not.

I'm half Mexican and was raised by the Mexican side of my family. Never heard of this cucoy or llarona stuff. My family never did anything that's related to that "day of the dead" junk either, so maybe it's regional.

Most older Latin families used the stories of cucuy and la Llorona to keep kids indoors and not cause havoc at night.

Youngsters this days don't know these stories. Shame really. I was never scared of these stories but rather fascinated by them. I love reading, listening and watching stuff of myths and legends from all over the world.

In the early 90s, the cartoon Tiny Toon Adventures had an episode of the gang being stalked by The Banshee. I visited the library sometime later to research the Banshee and led to other myths.

See, that's the thing - I'm no youngster. My grandparents were born nearly 100yrs ago, mom grew up during the 1950s and 60s, and I'm in my 40s. My grandmother's father knew Pancho Villa and would tell me stories about him when I was a kid, and my grandfather's mother was something of a "medicine woman" from his hometown in Mexico. Like I said, maybe it's regional, or maybe it's something the more religious Mexican families like mine avoided, but I've never heard about either of these things before now.

    Same here.

    1. This thread is awesome. I love cryptids and urban legends.
    2. One of my favorite urban legends just because of the creep factor is the Bandage Man. The story goes that the B.M. was a logger back at a saw mill. One day he had some accident and was believed to have died. Then in the 1960's a couple was on heading to Cannon Beach Oregon and all of a sudden the Bandage Man was on their truck. He was pounding on their window and could see them, they sped up and after awhile stopped but he was nowhere to be seen. Many more sightings of him have happened on the road heading to Cannon Beach since.

Water babies are a legend of the Paiute tribe regarding what allegedly lives in Pyramid Lake near Reno, Nevada. They are said to be the spirits of babies who were drowned in the old days when the local natives practiced infanticide, because they were malformed or sickly, and they are said to be dangerous.
