Sorry if this has been pointed out already, but I'm willing to bet Takara is taking the easy road with some of these beast era MP figures. No vehicle mode means no licensing deals to work out and they can make them at a slightly lower cost. It could be that only budgeted for so many G1 MPs a year and to fill the gaps they can put out a few BW or post TF:TM MPs.

 

That, but also the Japanese audience moved on from the season 1-2 G1 cast faster and more easily than the american audience did. So I've been expecting Masterpiece to branch out a bit more for a little while now.

 

Is this some common known fact?

 

Yeah, I mean I feel it, I think it's due to the Japanese follow on series' to G1 seasons 1-3. And then in addition to that Beast Wars neo and Beast Wars 2. Before Car Robots Japan had different cartoons filling in the gaps of American airing cartoons that allowed the audience to adjust to the idea of a more often changing cast. Where in the states you only really had Optimus Prime, Rodimus Prime, and Optimus Primal as leaders in Japan you had a lot more (not to mention the other cast members). That's why Car Robots main character wasn't original Optimus Prime, and the Unicron trilogy wasn't planned to be a connected trilogy at first.

 

also keeping in mind that technically in japan season 3 isnt season 3, its a sequel series, much like how japan split beast wars into beast wars (season 1) and a sequel, beast wars metals (season 2&3). so japans original continuity through beast machines has 10 animated series and essentially 3-4 ovas (if you count the 86 movie that they got really late):

Hmm, I understand the reasoning but I’m not sure whether that’s a strong enough basis for your statement. I just don’t see any reflection of this in the Masterpiece line. Right now we’ve got (using the list by tigatron2002):

35-ish from the 1st series;
3 from 2010;
1 from the Victory;
5 from BW and;
1 from BWII coming up.

That’s 5 out of 10 total series (11 if you count Zone as a series) getting homaged in the MP line, the vast majority of which is the very first series (AKA the G1 of G1).

To those thinking Lio looks “TOO cartoonish”:

Beast Wars MPs look great, because they’re basically modeled after the 3D rendered character models from the show. Unfortunately, BWII and Neo are 2D cartoons just like our beloved G1, and this is the first time we’ve gotten a beast mode derived from a 2D model in MP form.

Of course there’s no fur texture or realistic details—the Japanese are going for the purely cell animated look. Now, I’m probably gonna get a lot of hate for this post, but in my opinion, I love his beast mode and feel it has a certain charm to it. Yeah, he’ll look different next to the rest of your MPs, but let that make him unique.

Anyway, just wanted to share. I can understand why people are put off by it. The only thing that can put me off now is the price...

 

Given how BW S2 picks up almost immediately where BW S1 left off makes me wonder how they pulled that off with two full series in between.

 

MP-38 has those same fur properties as MP-48, so he won't stand out if you have him.

Yea, that’s something that I’ve always wondered about, and then in release chronology car robots came out before beast wars returns, though that separation is a little less jarring in my opinion

 

Have we seen any pics of the beast mode from the back?

 

It can be argued that they didn't actually pull it off so well, since after almost three continuous years of the previous Beast Wars series', Metals didn't do as well for Takara, which likely was one of the reasons why they chose to take a different approach than Hasbro for the next series when they developed Car Robots instead.

 

Maybe he means hubcap and bumblejumper? Or maybe something from after the show like the triggerbots/cons.
