I’ll admit to still being very excited. I can already envision him sitting next to me on my desk!

While I’m a faithful G1 nutter, I’ve also had my fair share of exposure to the other series/toylines that came after, and a decent representation of this guy has been on my wants list for near enough to 18 years.

I would recommend any of these 3 figures if you want the whole shebangbang treatment along with the og release . I’m perfectly happy with those but I’m also excited for this release , sometimes less is more but that’s just imo .

Man those are some nice shot. Tt took the effort to hide the animated lion face. Some pain flaking at the shoulder there hope it's only on the prototype.

Now this makes me wanna get the initial release Leo convoy just to compare with him ..... good work takara.

Sitting on a desk sounds terribly uncomfortable; get yourself a chair :p

I currently have the old Lio Convoy next to me, still a very fun toy but I'm ready for the MP.

Okay, I didn’t wait nearly as long (I think I got the original Lio Convoy about 5 years ago and wanted a new version since) but I’d say this was well worth the wait either way.

My first foray into the realm of Japanese BW was when I picked up Big Convoy, around 2004-2005, from a friend who was selling him.

I’d also kept an eye out for Lio Convoy prior to that, but was never able to find him from private sellers in my country, and I wasn’t overly comfortable buying off eBay at the time, so I just...went without. While I would have grabbed him if it was convenient to do so, I wasn’t a huge fan of the toy from what I’d seen of it online, so that also held me back. :)

I’m so thrilled with this reveal, and even happier that we don’t have to wait an eternity to get our hands on him.

Anyone remember if Lio Convoy in Beast Wars II used all the weapons the toy had, onscreen?

Can't I make a joke for once :lol

I didn’t get my hands on Big Convoy up until the Encore-release this year, but I do like this guy. Neo toys in general are fun. I hope you enjoy your MP Lio Convoy, so far I think he'll be great.

Yup. The missile launchers / guns in the lion mane were used, the rocket launchers / blasters on the arms were used, his mane-spinning "Lion Typhoon" was used (at which point the robot-looking mane turned into more organic-like hair strangely enough) und the arm blades were also used, sometimes even in beast mode were they came out of the bottom of his front paws. If you give me a bit of time I'll make screencaps for each.

He also had a generic looking gun sometimes which the toy didn’t really have (it could hold the launchers from the mane if you detached them though); maybe it'll be an accessory for the MP?

    Alright guys, here we go!

Lio Convoy has both blasters and missile launchers hidden in his mane. Sometimes he uses both at once:

    Sometimes just the missiles:

And at other times just the blasters:

We haven’t seen these on the figure yet, I expect them to be extra pieces which you can plug into the mane.

Then we have the "Lion Typhoon" during which the lion mane on his shoulder starts spinning. It was a gimmick on the original toy were you could make the panels which made the lion mane spin by pushing a button over and over, in the show it is used as a shielding move of sorts. Strangely enough not only the mane but also the lion head becomes organic-looking during this move, even though it looks more robotic when Lio Convoy is in robot mode. Maybe the MP will be able to also have the organic side on the shoulder to replicate this?

Now we have his wrist-mounted rocket launchers, prominently used during the intro. We can clearly see that these will work exactly like they did in the anime on the MP figure.

Next, a handheld gun. Strangely, during one shot it looks very generic and unlike anything the toys has, during the very next shot (I removed a scene in between were we see the Destron soldiers react to Lio's presence) it looks like one of the missile launchers from the mane. They were removable on the original toy and could be held in his hands. So I have no idea how the MP handles this, probably by giving him a gun modeled after the one stored in his mane, that would make the most sense to me.

Lastly, the "Lion Claw" attack, big claw-weapons used in both beast- and robot mode. They are stored within the front legs of the lion on the original toy as well as the animation model, hence why the lion legs hanging behind the robot arms isn't "kibble", it's supposed to be there. By the way, Lio Convoy doesn’t always use his claws in robot mode but when he does it's quite epic. The second gif below is from Episode 29, "The Artificial Planet Nemesis", in which Lio faces God Neptune (the white repaint of Piranacon). Lio Convoy uses his jetpack (he has similar thrusters built onto his back as Optimus Primal) to outmaneuver the giant and then strikes with the claws.

I might've missed a few weapons or things Lio Convoy used because I'm not that knowledgeable about the series, but for the features of the toy being mirrored on the show, this should be about it.

Also, I know we pretty much ended the "kibble"-discussion already, but just because I happened to stumble upon it, here's a screenshot showcasing the lion legs at the back of the robot arms:

They definitely belong there. But as has been proven before, sometimes the animators just didn’t bother to draw them or made them smaller.

    Awesome work @Darkstone!

I so hope we get much I what you detail. It's fairly clear the matrix panel opens. I do wonder if this will include electronics..my feeling is yes. The eyes look painted so maybe not the eyes?

The articulation looks as expected, except it doesn't appear he has an ab crunch, but I'm not ruling it out. It could be one of those you need to extend the waist for. Either way it's not a deal breaker for me.

I find out funny that a magic ball had sources. Does it spend it day on an office visit on the internet with a cigarette doing research?

Thats' a great pose. Wonder if MP Lio Convoy has an awesome ab crunch?
Edit: The first to put him on a tree branch like this under a moonlight wins the internet.
