Adaptus, one of the Guiding Hand - a group of superpowerful first Transformers because reasons - was worried that life would get boring because Transformers were immortal. He was also worried they'd never evolve to a "higher plane" because Transformers never died or evolved. His plan was to go out and beat the shit out of everything into the universe to force change. He fought the rest of the Guiding Hand who thought this was a dumb idea - also because reasons. He beat them and ran away.

Sometime after running away, he jumped through time because British writer and saw the future, where the Functionist Primus was about to punch Earth in half. He pooped himself and went back in time to create a god gun to kill Functionist Primus out of Cybertrons because plot contrivance.

Also as a side hustle he tried to make organic/super Transformers that would infiltrate the organic races and cause them to punch each other instead of punching his god gun.

    The end.

Why he didn't just sit around and make organic transformers that could just evolve in due course is beyond me, but I'm not James Roberts.

I thought the organic transformers was all Scorponok's doing as a side project, wasn't it?

Yeah, the purple baby was all Scorponock's idea. I think Adaptus was only responsible for the Infinite bots, which he based off of Primus a bit .

They die constantly. They're at war. Also "evolve" is a relative term. We talking a physical evolution? Special cases? Societal evolution? What's the end goal? Evolution isn't something with a set course or endgame, it's "what doesn't make it hard to survive." That's fucking absurd.

How stupid did IDW get after I stopped reading?

He probably means die of old age. Sort of "elvish immortality", as in they can be killed but don´t fall to old age.

Except they do. For example, Ratchet in the final issue. Wasn't Tailgate in series 1 falling to that too before Cyclonus shared his spark and saved him? I'm sure there were one or two more cases over the years that I forget now.

To be fair, we're never told what kind of knowledge base the Guiding Hand had save for the allegedly nigh omniscent Epistemus. For all we know, he was just some kind of crazy person on the level of General Ripper from Dr. Strangelove, incessantly worried about his essence or whatever. His definition of "evolution" doesn't have to make any kind of sense to anyone but him because he's a crazy person.

I think it was only vaguely addressed throughout the book - that Humans and other organic species seem to actually adapt to change faster than Transformers. In contrast, Transformers are apparently so slow on the uptake that they just fight for millions of years single-mindedly. My understanding (and I could be wrong) was that Adaptus felt that the side effect of a huge, nearly infinite lifespan was that there was no reason to actually "get better" at life, instead constantly doomed to repeat mistakes when they'd inevitably forget they made them, etc. whereas organics could somehow move past warlike impulses and ascend to the "Higher Realms" or whatever by "evolving".

Of course all that got flushed down the toilet when the Omega Guardians - supposedly the descendants of a race that ascended to the higher planes - turned out to be giant assholes.

Honestly it's not any more or less stupid than other comic books. Comic book wise, this is regular levels of stupid.

Orion Pax evolves at 16 the rest of Cybertronians evolve at 100.

My main take away was Adaptus outside of evolution was obsessed with Ratchet. The problem with evolution the changes occur at a slower rate than shorter lived species. Which kind of ironic considering outliers could had been sign of evolution. The main thing that changed Cybertronians was Earth. If Earth didn't happen Autobots and Decepticons will still be fighting for when Unicron comes calling.

Well, okay, it only really comes up in Car Robots, but... to quote the wiki, "As Optimus and Galvatron's battle continues, Car Robots has Galvatron finally reveal his true motivations, and his reason for seeking control of Earth's children. Transformers, he explains, are functionally immortal, but this also means that they are personally, spiritually, unchanging: they will always be who and what they are, tied to a certain destiny. By seizing control of the "pure spirits" of the children of Earth, who possess the power to decide the future, Galvatron hopes to change his own future, and free himself from the shackles of fate."

...Honestly, if Gigatron had been Adaptus/the Grand Architect, it really would have fit. His toy is infamous for its sheer number of fan modes, and he even turns into an actual "guiding hand"!

Yes, well. That's Roberts for you. For whatever reason, he was more than happy to make an OC for a key antagonist position than use a pre-existing one.

Oh that would have been so cool. And he transforms into his hand mode to punch the giant primus.

i mean to be fair it's not exactly an intuitive jump to make, as proven by the fact that i only realised it like a year after crucible came out
(and using gigatron wouldn't have made the shitty plot any better)
