Whereas the dino-parts of the earlier releases like Slag and Sludge were coated pretty much uniformly in silver metallic paint, the dino-bits of later releases like Grimlock and Snarl featured unpainted grey plastic alongside the silver painted bits.

For example, in the pic below, you can see how Grim's head as well as the upper part of his tail are grey plastic, whereas rest of him--save the yellow bits--is painted silver. Perhaps not ideal, but it doesn't really bother me. Your mileage may vary though. :)

Thanks for the info! I hope it’s uniform then. If not though it’s not gonna stop me from getting them!

Oh wow. I'm two in already, but I could totally be in on this. Even if I eventually sold the two I have for less than I paid, I'm sure the total cost would still be cheaper than if I tried to hunt down the last three.

    The gift set is great.
    1. No more worrying about how to hunt down all 5 or pay scalper prices
    2. Legends scale. No having to settle for MFT's bigger versions
    3. No more having to wait (or hoping) for Pocket Toys to release lower priced KO's

Bonus: Taobao estimates their pricing for the giftset to be about $73 USD before shipping. :D

They hate me up there, too! Just bought an incomplete set (minus Rager) around a month ago thinking a lone Rager (hehehe "lone rager" ^_^;)  figure shouldn't be too hard to find. Well, joke's on me! It seems like the only way for me to complete my DX9 Dinobots is to buy this set because Rager's so effin' hard to find!

But, weren't the Dinos in the series bigger than everyone else so MFT version would still be appropriate in size comparison?

I think that's going to depend on how people want their collections. Do they want the dinos bigger, or a LOT bigger. For example, I really don't picture the dinobots taller than Magnus in bot mode, and I like the size of MS Magnus in my collection. I also prefer a more 'legion' sized carbot (ala New Age), and an MFT Dino offering just wouldn't work. Others are doing the IF and MS sized carbots and going up from there, and either one might work depending how they want everyone to line up.

Been debating this on another thread... and think I'm actually now sold on the idea of the re-issue DX9 dinos. For around £95 shipped from ShowZStore, or even £105 shipped in collectors packing from TF Direct it's a no brainer. Seems like I've picked a great time to start my Legends collection!! :)

Yes, you picked a very great time to start with the DX9 WiP Dinobots.

When you or someone else receives the re-issues of the Dinobots I'd like to know if the Slag legs are wobbly. For the price I might buy them again and give my little nephew the old ones or even sell them for almost nothing.

    You have!

I started down this little road several years ago, when DX9 put out a great G1 Devastator. Now in 2019, there is a sea of legends figures, that are packed with nearly as much detail, paint, and articulation as their larger plastic peers come with. So in terms of selection, yes, awesome time to jump in this sea.

Availability may be an issue though. In the 3rd party arena, figures aren't generally made forever, and production runs aren't always huge volumes. Older, more obscure, and super rando repaint figures that are only available on the secondhand market will come at a premium if you want them. This is especially true for Iron Factory, but their figures are all(?) based on the modern, IDW comics based on G1 characters.

it is hard for me to imagine what that was really like back then in the way back whens.

i came in right after MFT slag dropped. because i saw the awesome pics being posted by you, snaku and robogeek. you guys are the reason i collect these.

but even then the selections weren't that hot. i passed on all the old DX9/IF bots plenty of times. because i thought they were just super small and not worth the money. lol...boy was i wrong on IF.

but now i have filled all my IF back catalog and moved my collection around to basically that with MFT filling in for the larger bots.

i am glad we have so many new legends collectors in the mix. but as the group expands i do miss some of the older guys who would just sit here and talk about these new tiny bots. back then when there really was no interest at all for the legends game outside of the core.

Legends didn't even interest me until they started to relatively scale with each other. Until 3Ps came in we had only HasTaks Legends & Legions where everyone had to be Matchbox car-sized in alt mode, regardless of what the alt mode was.

I thank the Cyberverse toyline of the TF PRIME era for introducing small figures, where the characters loosely scale to each other with their varied size classes. I may be wrong, but I don't think that had been a thing outside of CHUG and Masterpiece lines before the Cyberverse line.
It has been a downer seeing friendly avatars pop us less and less, over the years. You collect all that you want, or releases slow down and dry up, and that kills the interest of us older fans.

TF is not really cranking out content aimed our way, that keeps us freshly engaged.

So those that have DX9 War In the Pocket set, does this look odd with Magic Square figures? I see MS OP is 4.33" inches and these Dino's are 3.93" inches. I would hope at least similar in height but not under. Then again, I have Giga's MP's in robot modes so I thought it would be great to do whatever legends scale I get in Dino modes.

It's crazy - I can't believe how excited I am by them, more so than the few MP scale I have. It's like I'm an 8 year old lad again opening Soundwave for the first time, or waiting for Christmas and birthdays to come around knowing I may well end up getting a new Transformer or 3! :)

I'm still staggered by the amount of craft, detail, articulation etc. that these companies get into such small figures - and I think that's part of the reason why I've started to go down this route than MP scale, other than the obvious space/wallet issues!

Hoping they’ll put out a chromed set as well (a limited ed. ‘vintage’ version).

Not at all. Here they are with GT's Optimus, who is nearly the same height as MST's Optimus:
    201806130104380945~01~01-picsay.jpg
And the larger MFT KOs of DX9's:

Just a matter of how big you personally prefer your dinos be.

I'd only picked up Sludge before and kinda forgot to track down the rest, so a gift set is welcome news, even if I end up with an extra Sludge.

I DO still wish we'd get Diaclone and G2 redecos out of these too, but I'm not holding my breath there.

For some odd reason, Sludge was one I couldn't track down when I was looking a few weeks back, which is kind a like FT's MP version as well. I don't know why that character is so hard to find. Either way, if you listed yours up, I suspect you would get more than you paid for it or break even. Luckily, I never pulled the trigger so seeing this set is nice to see.
