They really should have gone the Coriolanus route with Megatron. Make him part of the aristocracy, have someone else start the Decepticons and the prelude war, have Megatron be commander of the Autobot military, defeat the Decepticons, and afterwards have Megatron become super power hungry if not dictatorial. Then have the Autobots exile him, he shacks up with whatever is left of the Decepticons, then rebuilds them and conquers Cybertron. Meanwhile, Orion was his second in command when he was an Autobot and then Orion takes over after Megatron is exiled. Make Prime a rank again, commander in chief of the Autobot Armed Forces. Now that's a story I want to read.
i mean, thats kind of the story going on in this series (in a general sense). Megatron is a senator, so he is part of the aristocracy despite coming from miner origins. Termagex started the ascenticons and presumably the rise as well, megatron is just the current face of them.
This is what I'm talking about! See how interesting and nuanced one can get with the story by expanding beyond a 20th Century "voice of the people" dictator model! I'd rather read either of these incarnations of Megs over what we seem to be getting again from IDW. Heck I'm excited by these prospects. Draw inspiration from all over, not just 2-3 European regions in a 40+ year time frame. We have over 4500 years of human history that can be sifted through in order to find examples of psychopathy, vengeance, MEGalomania, and everything else that embodies a tyrant.
I think that utilizing the Triumvirate (the Roman one, not the G1 comic one) pattern for the Decepticons would be very interesting. Megatron has never had much control over his faction; why not put Megatron on more equal footing with guys like Shockwave and Starscream. Each would have their own soldiers and resources, all tied together under a common banner. This would change the stale dynamic that the sterotypical "evil empire" has and help reconcile the extremely varied motivations and methods that the Decepticons have.
You know. I like the idea of a redeemable Megatron. Not quite what IDW-1 did, due to his "Robo-Hitler/Stalin" status, even if I managed to enjoy his character in MTMTE/Lost Light. But I wouldn't object to a sociopathic monster Megatron, an absolute maniac who views everyone and everything as tools to serve his ends again. Like Beast Wars Megatron, a character who was evil, knew it, and reveled in it.
