Disney owns it now but it wasn't their film when it was released so it doesn't count as a disney accomplishment.
Just to say they can. They’ll be able to market the crap out of it on the Blu Ray too, and it looks great to investors and shareholders as well. I don’t think it will catch Avatar under normal circumstances unless Disney starts forcing theaters to keep playing it longer than they otherwise would (which they have done in the past, and are likely to do). My local drive in has to be very careful with the movies they choose to show because Disney will only allow them to show one of their movies with another Disney movie. That means they’ll probably have to play Aladdin or Endgame for another month if they want to show Toy Story 4 for a couple weekends rather than another new release that might entice more people to go than seeing the same movie multiple times.
Because buying a box office winner umpteen years after the fact is not the same as making one as a current brand powerhouse. Until its sequels start coming out in another 82 years after they stop being delayed, no one thinks of Avatar as a Disney property. Avengers/Marvel, on the other hand, has arguably become more of flagship than even Star Wars/Lucasfilm is at this point. That's why.
I wish I knew what Avatar's numbers were after its original-only run, would be the fair comparison to make.
$2,749,064,328 - original run $2,787,965,087 - after re-release That math works out to an approx $38,900,759 Million in additional revenue between the two, but various sites say it was about a $33.2 Million difference, so there's an approx $5 Million variable in there. So it still made over $2.7 Billion in its initial run, and didn't make even another $50 Million over its 12 week re-release.
Disney bought marvel also. They didn't make the early marvel films also muppets and pixar also plus Disney has avatar 2 in the works. Nice way to promote it. In the long run I don't think Disney cares at all. They own both films. I don't think they care which movie they own is in first place. Again I didn't think Disney gives a crap. The fans are the ones who care. Disney owns all of them so I think they don't care who is first. They own star wars fa, avatar, titanic and endgame don't forget!
We're not talking about Disney as the brand, we're talking about the studios and people that produced the movie and why they would want this movie to break the all time record.
Those examples are not even remotely comparable considering the f'ing Muppets (??) or Pixar and whatever are not in contention for the #1 movie of ALL TIME. Yeah, Disney is ultimately the one laughing their way to the bank (now), but you're nuts if you think they don't care. More importantly, Marvel cares. And they're 50% of that relationship, so the statement still stands. Just like they care about THEIR Star Wars movie achievements more than the ones they just went and bought. Also remember that Disney bought Marvel in 2009 after Marvel only released TWO of their own self financed movies only ONE year earlier. One movie exceeded their expectations (Iron Man) and one movie basically tanked (The Incredible Hulk). The distribution rights for Iron Man 2, Captain America & Thor were already in place, but Disney still threw money at their productions before before taking full reigns from the first Avengers onward after buying the distro rights for it and Iron Man 3 from Paramount. I obviously didn't... as already pointed out in my previous statement that you just quoted. It doesn't change the bottom line answer.
Wow. Didn't mean to strike a nerve with everyone and get them mad at me. I just don't think Disney cares what movie they own is first. Again not wanting everyone to get mad at me so i'm sorry guys. Didn't mean to get everyone angry.
No one's mad, dude. Just articulating disagreement with your notion that Disney doesn't care since they now own Avatar. Don't worry - it's nothing to apologize for.
Its just fun to break records, thats all. Avatars been sitting in that seat for like 10 years now, would be quite the acheievment to knock ot out of the top spot.
I think it's also the hype backlash over Avatar talking, to some degree. It was an exceedingly average and derivative story, only buoyed by the incredible special effects for its time, and the first feature-length implementation of modern 3D technology. It's simply not the "greatest thing ever" that its box office totals could lead you to believe, so detractors have been salivating for a long time for a movie that can dethrone it, and actually deserves that spot. I think most fans think that Endgame had the best shot at that, given its 11 years of build-up and the ensuing worldwide hype. If Endgame can't pull it off, I find it difficult to believe that anything else can. It took an exceptional amount of work to get this far, and I don't see anything else in the near future that can match that effort.
I think this is pretty much the last true blockbuster in general. Pretty much every non-MCU franchise is in a really bad state right now, and people aren’t going to the theaters as much nowadays. Even the MCU probably won’t be able to top 11 years of buildup like that.
I like Avatar, but I still would like to see Endgame beat it. When I was a kid, I always wondered why no one ever put superheroes together in one movie. Amazingly Marvel is still the only studio to get a shared cinematic universe right. The 11 journey was something truly special, and Endgame payed off so many things so well. Even Antman and the Wasp (a movie that was brushed off as filler by a lot of people last year) was an important piece of the overall storyline. The final battle in Endgame is a dream come true as well, and I love going back to the theater to see audience’s reactions to it (I’ve only seen it 3 times myself though). The cultural impact it’s had easily rivals Star Wars now, and it may have even surpassed it (it certainly has at the box office).
