    Excellent work OT!
This is the stuff dreams are made of!

Hasbro should pay you to do online content for them!

I want to love Siege Skytread. I really do. I owned G1 Flywheels when I was a kid. The character owns a special place in my heart.

But, this Skytread is average. It's kinda just there. It doesn't have the Wow factor of Siege Sideswipe and Hound. Skytread is a nice enough looking figure. But, he doesn't have that "it" factor that Sideswipe and Hound have where I can't put them down.

I have long suspected OT may actually be a sorcerer. The guy is to plastic, what Jesus is to Lazarus.

    Okay, that's a dreadful analogy, I apologise.

Just got this figure today. This figure falls out of my collecting focus, however, I did want to get him since I fell into the bucket of really loving Battletrap.

With that in mind, this figure is a hit and miss for me.

    Pros:
    - The figure itself looks pretty nice. The mold is really good.
    - The plastic does feel nice.
    - The transformation is good. Not overly complicated, not too easy. I wouldn't say it's ground breaking but it's not horrible.

    Cons:
    - While they are using a better plastic, I don't think they tested the plastic with the mold. When the plastic is setting, it's setting too thick. With my figures the tolerances are off so things don't tab in too well. This happens on planes hands folding in, and on the legs tabbing together to make the tank. I have seen this in 3rd Party figures in the past, so I think that is happening here as well.
    - Battletrap brought me a unique type of joy, that I am not getting here. The fact that each figure transformed into their individual figures then combined was really smart. Some people may have not liked the transformation, but I really enjoyed it. With this, I think they should have done the same. It was a nice update and feels lacking here. This may not be a con if Battletrap didn't exist before hand.
    - This was mentioned by other, but it really feels like a miss that the Tank and plane can't combine with each other in any way. It's a small thing that kind of goes a long way in giving that final nod to G1. It's these little things that take a Good figure and makes it great.

So for me, this figure is okay, but most likely forgettable in the grand scheme of things. I am okay with the fact that I got it, but I don't get a lot of joy out of it. I mean today, I got Outback, Roadburn, Blowpipe and Powerdrive. Out of those, I was most taken aback by Roadburn. The transformation they squeaked into that guy was great fro a figure that size. So that should set expectations for the people out there getting this figure.

So I just did a fairly aggressive mod to my Skytread.

I was looking at the jet portion and how the tail gets in the way of the waist and legs in robot mode and I noticed that the tail is almost it's own piece and even has a hinge connection to the pin that holds the combiner joint.

So I decided to give it some articulation.

First I removed the wings (they block the arm assembly) then the screw that holds in the arm assembly, and removed the arms.
I then used a hobby knife to cut around the sides and base of the tail (sides from the top and base from the inside) to separate the tail from the main body.

    20190429_004207 (Medium).jpg

Then I shaped the top edge of the tail to give as much movement as I could without making to much of a hole.

    20190429_004232 (Medium).jpg

I'm pretty happy with how it came out. There is a bit of a gap in jet mode, but everything still locks in solid since the arms peg into the combiner port, which pegs into the tail.

    20190429_001947 (Medium).jpg

Now that the tail can move back there is a lot more room for waist articulation in robot mode.

    20190429_002213 (Medium).jpg 20190429_002218 (Medium).jpg 20190429_002253 (Medium).jpg

It also helps keep the tail out of the way of the legs, just generally giving a bit more freedom.

It just looked like one of those things that got scraped part way through the design process and couldn't help myself :)

Whoa. How does this kind of stuff get scrapped halfway through the design process?

It may have or may not have been. Since we're not privy to 99% of any given toy's design phase, it's only just largely guess work and not indicative of any supposed thought processes from either hasbro or takara design teams.

I'm glad we got this guy, and I don't care that he doesn't transform into two separate robots.

My only complaints are that I had to trim some plastic off of the back of the tank cannon with an Exact-o knife in order to get it to fit into the 5mm port. The port was showing serious plastic stress marks, so I felt like I had no choice.

He looks good with his fellow Duocon, Battletrap from PotP.

I do recommend Skytread, but be careful and be ready to modify if needed.

I agree. It was actually that stop motion short that was released recently that led me to buying him. As for the 2 separate robots, wasn’t the G1 just like this? Jet/tank that formed into one robot? I know that they split them for Battletrap, but even he was originally only one robot. So, I don’t mind Skytread having one robot mode

This - as I understand it - is a fundamental design issue, rather than a sporadic quality control one.

The most elegant solution is the modification outlined below (props to thedicemaster!) which will allow both the cannon and leg panels to connect securely in tank mode.

I actually prefer this figure to the POTP toy. Trying to squeeze in the individual robot mode into each component had a net negative impact on the POTP figure.

One is in bot mode with his titanmaster as a backpack and the other is in altmode on sky shadow who is in base mode.

    Great fig

Thanks! It's the faithfulness to his G1 self that really makes this a stand-out figure for me; usually mainline figures seem to go out of their way to re-imagine the designs/alt modes etc. Skyfire and Omega look promising, but I wish they did a whole line of this kind of no-nonsense 'Masterpiece-on-a-budget' and perhaps cover some obscure but well-loved G1 characters who would otherwise never get a MP look-in.

How did I miss this post?!

    Fantastic work, @OptimusTimelord!

Though, I may have to ruin it for some of you possibly, and I'm sorry but; I LOL when I saw where the tank barrel shrank and retracted into. :lol  Perfectly placed, though I'd hate to see the reverse of that animation as it might be too lewd.o_O

    Sorry, not sorry.;) :p :D

Or the gif plays in reverse then forward over and over right when the barrel appears/disappears
