She is complete! Or at least as far as I'm willing to go at the moment. Meet Penitance, my first OC custom! It was really fun. I'd love to come up with a backstory for her. Maybe Beast Wars, Prime or IDW. She could be a lost protoform, one of Shockwave's experiments, a hybrid Predacon and Insecticon, or part of the clans on Eukaris. Now onwards to the next one! That' a tight, solid looking build so far, both modes look great. I showed my co-worker, and discovered that she absolutely hates bugs! Don't quit this, there's a lot of potential. Make sure you and down rub spots, and like blastpak said, drybrushing will really bring out details and layers of colors. Eagerly awaiting progress on this one.
Looks like that's coming along well! Good thing it's a female so she won't have to worry about getting her head eaten after mating.
I can't wait to start painting. But I still need to figure out how the head is going to work. I can't store it anywhere without it being really Bulky. Maybe I could make it part of a weapon? UPDATE: Sorry it's been a while. Brain just kind of works when it wants. I found a head that I sort of like. A marvel space goon of all places. Thankfully a cheap figure. I thanked it for it's sacrifice. I cut off the neck thinking I might use it. Didn't look great but that's okay. Just means I can't return it. The head might be permanent, it might not. It depends on if I find a better one. I looked at headsculpts everywhere. Shatter, sirtoys.com, junk bin, my local toy guy probably thinks I'm a bit odd for asking if I could just by the heads. I've been drawing mantids like crazy. I'm sure people at work think I am. I want to get the wings just right. I used tissue paper to make some temp wings until I find a material I like. After some playing around, I'm definitely liking the wings. In bot mode, the large wings mount to her back and the smaller ones become skirt pieces. Aqua from Kingdom Hearts is the inspiration for the skirt. The long legged version. My wife said she looks like a Skydancer if anyone remembers those toys. I'll probably make the wings a little smaller. I just traced them from one of my drawings. I want them to be as long as, or just slightly shorter than the abdomen. Still can't think of a name for her.
In the past i thought about using a light durable fabric like silk for something like this. Might be able to use some pedal from silk flowers. Then you could use thin wire to mount them. And they would be poseable. Anyway this looks great. And i like the head!
Fair enough. I've never owned Manterror. I assumed with a name like Manterror, and the fact that female mantids devour their mates, that she was a she. It wouldn't be the first time Hasbro did this kind of thing either. Waspinator transforms into a female wasp. Regardless, I'll probably keep referring to her as such.
Thanks for the idea! I was going to look for some kind of patterned plastic, but the flower idea is much better. I'll check local dollar stores this week.
