Well, the initial hype surrounding it is obviously just the morbid curiosity over the batshit insanity of its premise. Classic Disney + Final Fantasy crossover, bwah? That's the entire hook right there. Whether you get drawn into the franchise further than that is a matter of taste. But once you've got fans, you've got fans.

Hmm. Guess that's why. I never really was into either Disney or Final Fantasy to begin with, so mixing the two shouldn't yield that much better in my case. Thanks!

Both are/were insanely popular over in Japan at the time of the first game's creation (Final Fantasy has perhaps waned a bit, due to SquareEnix's constant attempts to reinvent the franchise and thus no longer maintains a steady/hardcore following. But nostalgia for the "classic" games in the franchise still remains high), so that's all they really needed to get people to tune in.

But if you're not super into either franchise, then no, that wouldn't be a particular big draw for you. But perhaps to put it into perspective, imagine if the MCU/Avengers had a big crossover movie where they partnered up with the Sesame Street cast. That combination is just so weird and crazy, with two franchises that don't seem to belong anywhere near each other that you just have to check it out, right?

I’d be interested to see that. If only because it sounds hilarious

Yeah, I love both Disney and Final Fantasy, but I found Kingdom Hearts boring as hell. Weird how that happens.

I'm not a JRPG or Disney guy at all, but every time I read about Kingdom Hearts I immediately think about how much more money they would be making out of that if the whole thing didn't look so ludicrous and inaccessible to anyone that wasn't already on board.

You know I’ve always been pretty iffy when it came to Kingdom Hearts. I never really saw the appeal of it, but after meeting a bunch of fans in person, I think I sort of understand why they like it. A lot of people played the original as a young kid, and I think a lot them weren’t familiar with JRPGs and their style of gameplay and storytelling. It took characters they had known practically ever since they could remember, and put them into a vastly different setting and story, with a different tone. To a kid, I’m sure that was mindblowing.

What gets me though, is how every fan I’ve met always tells me it was a childhood defining moment. I’m not sure if I could attest to that, but I do sort of know what thats like. My first JRPG was Tales of Berseria back when it came out two years ago. I had been wanting to explore games more(was only really into Mass Effect, Halo, and Skyrim), and saw a trailer for it and was instantly hooked. That game opened my eyes to a new type of storytelling, and showed me just how amazing a game could be. As somebody who aspires to be a professional writer, it was amazing. Every time I get to the credits of each playthrough, it still gets me. I can’t help it, even though I’ve played countless JRPGs and the like since. That game holds a special place in my heart.

I think a lot of Kingdom Hearts fans are like that. It meant something special to them as a kid as it was a sort of eye-opener, and they’ve enjoyed it since.

I fucking hate mobile games. Not because of micro transactions, not because of having to pay to win. Because every goddamn fucking one I’ve played has always had to “update” at some point, and then clears my fucking save data.

No, no Fate/Grand Order. I didn’t want you to save the FUCKING SAVE THE 40 HOURS I PUT INTO YOU. Never mind the fucking MONEY either! It’s fine! Just update and then reset me all the way back to the fucking beginning and get rid of all my progress!

Oh whats that? It has a Data Transfer option? Hmmm. That would have been nice to use. But when the game says “You can’t play this until you update it”, and then you update it and it just restarts the game, there is no way to transfer my fucking data.

The best part about all of this? Nobody who works on these games gives a shit. “Oh you lost all your progress including all the items you paid for? Guess you’ll just have to start again!”

The first Wily stage has what might be the second best fortress stage music in the franchise (the best obviously being that one from Mega Man 2 :D )

The unpopular opinion I currently have? Game companies don't owe you jack shit because you bought a digital game and limited run decides to release a physical copy.

    Adding a few more:

-I am SICK of games that take place in a post-apocalyptic or shitty future. Can't we have a game that takes place in a nice, happy future for a change? Give that futuristic setting a sense of awe and wonder that we all used to have as children. If there are any games out there that take place in a good future, please let me know, because I'd like to play those instead.
-I'm honestly getting sick of modern FPS games that are grounded in reality. Oh look, another military shooter game where you play as a person or group of specialized soldiers sent out for some mission that inevitably goes horribly wrong and you or your team is blamed for the mission and you spend the rest of your game trying to clear your name or names while also stopping a villain who may be British or Russian. UGH! I mean, I can accept that plot as an 80s action film, but not as a modern FPS game.
-Kingdom Hearts is overrated. I like Tetsuya Nomura, but by God, the man can't write his way out of a sandwich. The storyline and plot for the Metal Gear series makes more sense than this.

I think that's part of what made Overwatch so attractive initially, and helped it stand out from the crowd. FPS are always this dull and gritty affair, and while OW has a pretty grim bunch of backstories attached, it's all about making lemonade out of lemons and being ultimately optimistic.

Then there's also Dead Rising and Sunset Overdrive and Lollipop Chainsaw that say "yeah, there's a zombie apocalypse and all, but let's make it silly and crazy".
