Tailgate's hardly a great example, considering he appeared for all of two minutes in Sunbow and was in two UK-only issues of Marvel. Hardly iconic.

For me it's the other way around. I love the comics, but if I want a comic-accurate figure I've got to shell out excessive amounts of cash for an MMC toy, with the exception of a small handful of toys, some of which are badly out of scale with each other (Looking at you, Voyager Brainstorm). And of all of them, the only characters that haven't since been superceded by a more Sunbow-esque design are Sandstorm, Swerve, Skids, and Crosscut.

Added, I somehow doubt that Skids' appearance from two episodes of a cartoon where he was so inconsequential that he was voiced by a different actor in each episode counts as "iconic" compared to the version that was a main character in a comic for several years.

A lot of the figures that are only represented in IDW-esque form in CHUG are characters that were crowdfillers at best in older material. The IDW designs were chosen for the toys because that was when those characters made an impact on people.

Charlene would disagree with your assessment of Skids.

Also, wasn't he another that wasn't replaced with a Sunbow version as far as the toys go? Or Hoist?

Regardless, not everyone views MTMTE/LL as the definitive Transformers representation. I'd personally rather they do toys of the E. J. Su designs from Furman's run on IDW than the things we got from anything after AHM.

I think, more than any other post-G1 era, RID is in most need of Generations updates. Not just for better versions of figures not everyone liked, like Strongarm and Steeljaw, but characters like Clampdown and Underbite, who never got good figures of appropriate size, or the likes of Glowstrike and Saberhorn, who never got toys period.

Oh yeah. Better figures for Grimlock, Strongarm, Thunderhoof and Steeljaw and figures for Glowstrike, Saberhorn Underbite and ChopShop are instabuy.

Agreed. I mean, I'm okay with the existing figures for Grimlock, Strongarm, and Steeljaw, but I wouldn't say no to Generations updates for them, and a proper RID Chop Shop would blow my mind.

SS-38 while stunning visually and fun, has engeenering issues, seriously, it's almost as bad as what MPM4's issues were but sightly "better", the legs cannot be correctly transformed or hold the pegs properly, the cab it's also a pain in the head to align it, and has stability issues, i'm sure this is not a QC issue.

I feel like they rushed the hell out of him, most of the SS toys while not as complex, they're very straightfoward in the transformation, he needed to be more simplified.

Clunker Bumblebee is the best Studio Series Bumblebee. We all know the issues present in SS-01 and the WWII Bumblebee is a shell former. However, the Bumblebee Movie Bumblebee doesn't seem like it's built to last. I called it my favorite Transformer when I first got mine (from the Then and Now 2-pack with the rereleased TLK Bumblebee), but I took it off the shelf recently, and noticed these frightening stress marks on the secondary door-wings and the hinges connecting the hood to the windshield. I'm terrified of tucking the secondary door-wings in and collapsing the backpack all the way because I feel like it's going to break if I do that.

By contrast, Clunker Bumblebee has been through far more use and abuse, and has no stress marks or even joints that have become looser over time. It's a severely underrated toy and the most solid and sturdy Studio Series Bumblebee that I've experienced.

Shave the sculpted grey detail on the back since they're necessary and the next time you fold in the secondary wings shave off the extra plastic so you won't stress the plastic anymore. Did those since I got the figure and no major problems so far.
Either way i agree that he's not the best, since he's not good out of the box.

what was it I did to my first studio bee, I think I shaved some of the hood away at the front, and the tabs off the car doors, really makes the guy easier to morph. Can't perma-fix the roof bit, but a dab of gorilla that I let dry seems to be doing the trick.

    I completely agree :lol
It's my dream to have a titan Overlord.
I know he was never that big in fiction.
I know it doesn't fit with his altmodes (altough Metroplex has some sort of tank as an altmode as well and there are things you can say about the feasibility of Scorponok's scorpion mode) but I think with the base mode re-designed as a cool citymode he could be an awesome chunky titan-class robot/playset.

It's a mobile carrier. The G1 figure had it as well, and it's actually my preferred alt mode for my Takara Metroplex. It looks even better than city mode and also a bit more intimidating.

I could agree to a Commander Class Overlord, but Titan Class would be too big in my opinion.
Considering they just did him in TR, I think any future Commander or Titan releases should be of characters typically well known as being huge.

I don't really know what a mobile carrier is - though I have an idea - but my point is that it rolls on threads, like Overlord's tank mode.
And thus Metroplex is liable to the same criticism as Overlord when it comes to fitness size wise to titan class.
Obviously I don't want a new Overlord toy right away.
I'm just saying: someday if all the characters you just listed are done and we got a titan primus and Unicron, it would be nice if Hasbro went nuts and did a titan overlord.

Actually, it has wheels. Not treads.
It looks like a dual-deck aircraft carrier, so I could easily see Grandus in a Commander or Titan slot. Considering we have new Micromasters, he would be a pretty fitting choice.

Never understood why Lockdown is ranked pretty high up on people's lists of best SS figures. Sure he's cool, but he has a massive backpack, kinda annoying transformation, and funny articulation

It is a cool altmode. I do like the aircraft carrier look.

Beast Wars MPs are coming out at higher frequency than G1 MPs.

MPs ought to be just a highly articulated robot figure packaged with a highly detailed alt-mode (and articulated if a beast former). get all the "show accurate" goodness without all the mad transformation. Clean sculpts, perfect scale, and they could just package Meg's alt-mode as a tiny gun to be held in robot hands to get around all the replica firearm laws. Devastator and combiner teams would be expensive as hell (what else is new), but where there's a will there's a wallet.

Same with me. SS Lockdown's sculpt is well-done and the alt-mode looks kinda nice, but I also find the other SS figures like Jazz to be a lot more fun to play with. The huge backpack of SS Lockdown kinda reminds me of TLK deluxe Barricade, but even then TLK Barricade has some fun accessories like the gauntlet gun, baton stick and pistol which do helps in terms of play-ability.
