Animated series and comic books are the worst thing ever.

But what you're pointing out is a problem that would exist without the scale chart. Mass shifting is a fantasy. Tanks and jets are MUCH larger then domestic vehicles or handheld items.

With combiners you have to pick (a) Individual Robot Modes scale with other robots or (B) Really Big Combiner Mode. You can't have both (despite what FT will have you believe).

City Bots will never be as large as a city but most of us, I think, prefer the figures look good together despite failing at "real world scale." For example, Legends Groove versus Deluxe Groove. Deluxe Groove does not make sense when compared to other deluxe domestic vehicles-- its too big but we want a deluxe size robot over "real world scale" motorcycle.

I guess, I don't get why folks dislike the scale chart since it gives a good guide on how tall/big everyone should be in comparison to everyone else. Before Siege moved to this system, I would simply collect leader-class figures and ignore if they "scaled properly" together. I enjoyed leader Soundwave next to leader Overlord next to leader Ultra Magnus-- but I"m sure the scale of these characters drove some fans really batty.

 

...except for the part where the scale chart has to exist in order for the people creating media to know how to accurately and consistently portray the characters in any given continuity. That is why these scale charts exist. Not for a bunch of people on a forum to compare their toys to.

So out of curiousity. How big was Apeface to, let's say Hound, in both cartoon and toy formats?

 

But a lot of fans want their figures to match what they see on screen or in a comic. So yeah, the scale makes sense.

Some fans don’t care about sizes (voyager Soundwave vs leader Soundwave doesn’t matter). But sone of us do get frustrated when the new Starscream mold is a deluxe or smaller (hypothetical example).

I can’t answer your first question with concrete evidence but I assume Apeface is voyager size, like most triplechangers.

 

Would say that it doesn't matter. We've seen Siege play fast and loose with the sizes of figures both within the price point and between price points.

Even if he was just a bit taller than Hound or a bit shorter than Prime/Megatron, he'd likely be a Voyager at minimum in order for him to have all of the parts needed for his three modes. Sure, we've got a potential Leader Astrotrain in the pipeline but we're not 100% sure what's going on there and since Leaders thusfar have been Voyagers with armor it's entirely likely he's just a Voyager Astrotrain with armor made from a space caboose (damnit now I won't be happy if it ain't that)

 

(And, as an addendum: Even the G1 toys weren't "scale" to the original series.)

 

You’re being judgmental on how fans prefer their figures to be designed. We all have our preferences. The scale chart works for some of us for very concrete reasons. It might not work for you and that’s fine. But it’s not a better/worse reason then someone who wants alt-modes to scale with each other or who wants all their figures to be the exact same size. Or if you simply don’t care what size it is.

The whole conversation started because someone wondered why there even was a scale chart in the first place, and I pointed out it was because they're needed as part of the series bible and had nothing to do with the toys.

Siege filled a huge void with me. I've been a scale enthusiast ever since I can remember, and have been futilely grouping my TF collection by rough "scale" since RID2001. Since Siege happened, I have to admit, I have lost all interest in previous Generations/mainline TFs because Siege figures are actually in a unified scale. I was kind of surprised that not as many G1 fans care about scale. Strangely enough, there is a lot of scale talk in the Studio Series circles in comparison. =/

 

In before Hasbro makes Apeface a fembot.  

 

Apeface however does represent the problem with the scale chart though, which is that even the scale chart was completely inconsistent. It was just a general guideline for the animators not some prophetic holy edict that had to be upheld. For example (and to offer an answer to @marvel b who asked) here's one picture of him showing he and Snapdragon were basically the same size as Galvatron:



However here is another image of him being the same size as buddies Mindwipe and Weirdwolf:

Sunbow size really doesn't matter guys. The key thing is the class that Hasbro thinks it requires in order to incorporate all his gimmicks. As had been previously stated, that's most likely Voyager class (or larger).

Yeah, I say give him voyager as well. Thanks btw. Honestly, I don't care about scale in my collection, I just didn't know much about him.

 

The 3rd and 5th pictures are rebirth, the others are headmasters, which likely uses its own scale guide for the animators

 

Voyager feels right for Apeface since the g1 toy was such a big chunky piece of plastic.

 

Most people never pay close attention to scale because up until the likes of Siege and Studio Series it wasn't a thing in the toyline.

I think Hasbro liked the idea because it let them reset the relative size of each figure class and focus on building the "best" figure rather than having to make concessions to Transformation or overall look so they call all be the same height.

So now you can have both DotM Megatron and Jetfire at the same price point. But it feels okay because they've got interesting transformations and the modes feel solid at each price point.

 

Aye, that makes sense. Though I'm in the minority when saying this, but I hope HasTak goes mack and gives us "perfect" versions of every character. Also entire separate lines for Beast Wars & Unicron Trilogy for scale/accuracy. Might not happen, but how many lines are going on at once with the Transformers franchise anyway? =p
