Some of you may be wondering how Paramount lost $100 million from The Last Knight when it made $605.4 million at the box-office.

It’s because a production company (in this case Paramount) must first payoff the Theater Cut, Distributor costs and fees, royalty fees (to Hasbro), tax, government charges from various countries, partner percentages (Tencent Films China) and charges for other involved parties before getting some money into their hands. As a rule of thumb, it is usually around 50% of the box-office + home release.

Even so, the company must subtract Production Cost and Marketing Cost. Whatever that is left would be the profit. But in this case it’s a $ 100 million loss because Paramount never made back those two costs by $100 million.

For example if the Production cost was 260 and marketing was 150, after paying off the above mentioned charges, they may have been left with just $310 million from ticket sales + home release; which wouldn’t cover the $410 million they’ve spent on the movie.

Great news. Hopefully Bumblebee is the blueprint going forward.

Hopefully this is a good indication for the future of Transformers films.

I look forward to the upcoming plans for the film franchise.

Worth considering Bay and Wahlberg’s profit participations as well, which would be very sizable and, depending on how defined, could push back recoupment. No way that Knight or Steinfeld would have anywhere close to the richness of those deals. Which, again, may be the blueprint - engage up and coming talent that is more affordable and won’t eat into revenues in the same way.

Change is occurring from the inside. Lorenzo's been quiet lately.

I suspected Bumblebee would do well during the home release. I'm sure a good portion of that is due its good ratings. On most digital renting sites, you will see the Rotten Tomatoes score next to each film. Having a 93% goes a long way. Make a good movie and you will see results. Now, here's hoping Bumblebee will restore the public's faith in this brand like how Batman Begins did to Batman.

From your lips to God’s ears. That kind of leap forward commercially and artistically would be the absolute best case scenario. Let’s hope they maintain Bumblebee’s focus on story and character.

I really hope that with these results we can see a new Transformers movie sooner maybe in 2021.

I’d be surprised if we don’t. The timeline is short but they’ll want to build on BB’s momentum. Next year, the focus will be on the Netflix show probably but I expect we’ll see an announcement.

Has anyone looked at the release date calendar to see if Paramount has saved a date in 2021 for an unreleased franchise film?

I don't think he's ridiculing it by using quotes. I think he is ridiculing it by calling it a $100 million dollar loss and fiscally irresponsible :p

Also remember that Paramount does not have many franchises that explode like other studios (Disney, Universal, Warner and even Sony) Paramount is the studio minus box office of the big five in Hollywood and if Transformers is its highest grossing franchise over Mission: Impossible (I do not know another box office franchise for God and think that Paramount had the MCU in its beginnings), let's hope new movies and give them more budget than Bumblebee.

There is no defense against this kind of slam on the Bayverse from somebody very high up and involved with making the films. It's official: even Viacom thinks bayformers sucks.

I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but long live Bumblebee...provided he gets his goddamn voice back!

This is great to hear if it weren't for the fact that Paramount is later releasing that god-awful-looking Sonic the Hedgehog movie that’s probably going to jeopardize them again.

(Yeah, they’re going to fix it, but A) we don’t know by how much, and B) those poor artists will be under a MASSIVE crunch crisis. And they probably thought they were dealing with a bad design themselves...:( )

You should know that during the event, Mr. Bakish completely ignored mentioning Sonic for 2019 but instead stated something like 'we moved some movies from 2019 to 2020'. If we put 2 and 2 together, it seems like he hinted at Sonic. Perhaps, they'll correct it, but it may take some time. We'll know for sure during the Q3 financial meeting.

if they are that scared to mention the film by name while its already advertised & euthanized on tv, then they should not bother even releasing Sonic & take the smaller loss right now...

Footage shown during Cinemacon 2019 received a massively positive reaction. With some refined CGI, the movie could work well.

    That brightens my day. :)

See, that’s something that leaves me stumped. How can the footage from Cinemacon be considered positive when what we’ve seen is the opposite of that? Weren’t they the same footage?
