I'd counter with even Superhero movies were not successful often until the last 10 years. We had a wonderful Pacific Rim Mech Movie, but they completely disrespected the franchise and Mecha in general in the sequel

He killed one Seeker, but not without great difficulty, and two other Decepticons with help (chains and a boat). Bumblee is a reboot, its not connected to the old movies. BB may have become a weirdly barbaric fighter, but in the new movies he is a scout, hence why Optimus sent him to Earth, to SCOUT for a new base of operations.

Yes, Pacific Rim was a fairly good one despite some plots like jaegers being dropped by several small helicopters... In order for Mecha movies to succeed, we need a great director, a great plot and several good robot designs. But most of the mecha movies now are as mediocre as Power Rangers.

Transformers should not be easily killed by a chain or a boat. That's why I was not very fond of the BBB movie.

It's tough for anything that isn't superheroes or Star Wars to dominate at the box office. It seems like everything else has to plan out their release date so that the latest superhero movie isn't the 800 pound gorilla they have to face off against for box office dollars.

A chain interwoven all through Dropkick's body, compromising his integrity and thus LITTERALLY ripping him to pieces from the inside out.

A giant boat did not kill Shatter.

A giant boat SLAMMING her into the side of a concrete drydock was what killed her. The degree of forces involved due to the boat's inertia impacting a sunken immovable object would flatten virtually anything caught in between.

I would say not. I love the Gundam franchise but it is so small here compared to Japan. Also live action anime adaptations do not do well. Look at Space Battleship Yamato it was a travesty or the Netflix death note. G-Saviour - Wikipedia is why Gundam can't work.

At this point, I bet even spiderman movie will gross more than Optimus movie if they were released on the same date

We need a good movie whose box office has legs. As long as the quality is good, there is no need to worry too much about the box office.

You should have looked at the budget of these movies. G-saviour only has a budget of 5 million. You expect a sci-fi movie to earn a lot with such a low budget? But now Legendary is in charge and Legendary loves big budgets. Let's see what big budgets can bring to Gundams.

You have clearly not seen G-Savior if you think the only thing wrong with it was the budget. For starters, the only reason the main suit is even called the G-Savior is because Bandai refused to let the production use the term Gundam - Bandai pretends the film doesn't even exist save for the one 1/144 HG kit they produced.

There are so many things that go into the box office than just is it a good film or not.

Kubo and the Two Strings was a great movie but because it wasn't Disney or Pixar with those deep deep marketing pockets the domestic run was only $48 million and the international run was not good because they didn't have the distributors to get into most markets. Most of us seem to agree that Bumblebee was a good film but it was going head to head with Aquaman that turned into a far bigger hit than anyone expected. Sometimes a film just can't pick up buzz because it gets associated with something people didn't like. There just seem to be so many factors that go into the box office than just is it a good movie you can enjoy.

I feel like the next Transformers movie needs to find a release slot where it's not going up against too many things. Something that has a few weeks to shine before some huge film takes away all the public's attention.

No argument from me that the boat would be absolutely killed Shatter given the weight and momentum.

But man, as a firearms fanatic people underestimate guns all the time. In the 2003 attack on Karbala during the 2nd Iraq war, out of 31 Apache attack helicopters, 1 was shot down, 1 crashed, and 28 suffered such heavy damage to parts like main rotors and drive shafts that they were considered inoperable. One was riddled with 29 bullet holes. The rub? All of these helicopters were attacked with small arms like rifles amd machine guns.

Small arms fire can still be damaging if they hit vital parts like drive components and sensors. Its why you saw Syrian rebels shoot at tanks with rifles...hoping to destroy or damage the top mounted MGs or cameras and sensors.

It makes sense that Transformers could be damages by small arms fire. Bayformer designs jave so many open areas and exposed joints that even if their armor can stop human small arms, any well placed shot would just tear through unarmored vital parts.

Unlike G1 designs which have covered joints and no exposed insides. =)

You forgot possibly the greatest example: Lennox killing Blackout...by firing grenades into his crotch.

Yup. A 40mm grenade into the cabin of a car or underneath it will FUCK IT UP. Not surprised that 40mm literally into Blackout's UNARMORED INSIDES did so much damage.

I mean, I know this is going off topic but I actually always appreciated that in Transformers. Modern small arms are REALLY LETHAL. An infantryman's rifle can still punch through vehicle doors and disable vehicles with enough fire, or just kill the driver and stop the vehicle's operation. That's not even factoring weapons DESIGNED to penetrate light armor in small arms, like .50 BMG. For how much I generally dislike Bay his hard on for the US military really did do the military aspect of Transformers justice I feel.

ANYWAYS to tie this back on topic...even Gundam doesn't ignore small arms. Most Gundam class mobile suits have vulcan guns in the head for the express purpose of mulching infantrymen and light vehicles to save shots from their main weapons. The vulcans are absolutely worthless when trying to DESTROY another mobile suit, but they're really good at doing things like damaging parts like sensors or weapon systems.

Infantrymen aren't even ignored. It's really clear in Gundam that infantry have weapons that could potentially damage a mobile suit. Rocket launchers, fixed anti-armor emplacements, and what not. While not the most ideal things to employ against mobile suits, they're better than nothing. In the official lore the Earth Federation actively employed teams of infantrymen who did anti-mobile suit work.

So umm...yeah. Transformers and Gundam. Both IPs respect infantry weapon systems.

Yep. In DotM, NEST went for the Decepticons' weaknesses: sniping their eyes, planting explosives on their legs afterwards, and finishing them off with barrages of fire to rattle their systems until something got through - which given that most of the Cons in that scene were protoforms, didn't take long.

I don't think the new Gundam will be that successful, the audience is getting bored with giant robots for now.

That would be a cool scene in a TF movie sometime, explaining just how lethal those weapons are. Could have fit in DotM when the humans were training for fighting Decepticons.
