So, I usually never post something like this, but I find myself indecisive regarding which Sixshot to buy - the TR version with the Dr Wu upgrade, or MMC's Terminus Hexatron. I know they are two rather different takes on the character, I'm just torn. Just looking to hear other people's opinions. Thank you
I don't have the Dr. Wu set, but I did add the Shockwave Lab hands to my TR Sixshot and it adds a whole new feel to him!
I'm not a fan of Hexatron. It's a details thing. He's just...too overloaded with those ribs that it just looks ugly. I'm just not a big fan of it's proportions too. But to each their own. The TR one is solid and I just don't see the need to have Hexatron when the TR one is so damn good.
Hexatron's on deep discount on BBTS right now and I think it's much better than TR even with upgrades.
I have both, and while Hexatron is nice, I prefer the blockyness of the TR version. Hexatron looks like more of a warrior, but I have always felt (much like their predaking) that it is a little overly detailed and full of ridges (moreso on Hex than Pred) for a classics collection. I do not have the upgrade kit to go with TR though. That being said, both are pretty solid figures.
Both are good figures, but I find the alt modes on TR Sixshot to be more distinct than on Hexatron, so for that reason, I ended up selling my Hexatron and went with TR Sixshot with the Dr Wu helmet. You can't go too wrong with either, so go for which ever you think looks the best in all six modes. Or whichever you can afford, since TR Sixshot should be fairly cheap these days.
If you're even remotely leaning towards Hexatron... try and find the CloneDroid KO instead. CloneDroid retooled out some of the over-detailing and added a much needed hinge to that knee panel on MMC Hexatron so they could fold down. I also prefer the more angular headsculpt. My only gripe with it is I don't care for are the ninja star wheels. Definitely something MMC fixed with the Continuum version. Other than that, I think it's a great figure. Definitely made me rethink what I thought originally of KOs.
I owned Hexatron for a short while. Nice figure, but not Sixshot. The detailing is rather awful, and it just wasn't a fun figure. Glad I sold it off. My personal preference is the Takara Legends release. The colors are stunning, and the presentation (box) is so deliciously G1. I added an upgrade kit that gave it an anime accurate head and articulated hands and it takes it from a 10/10 to a 12/10.
I have CloneDroid and TR Sixshot. CloneDroid is a lovely high grade version on the cheap. But it's really what you want from them. CloneDroid/Hexatron is a great display piece and all the modes are fun but can be finicky to transform. If you want a guy that you can pick up, fiddle with and transform with ease, TR Sixshot is great for that. I have both and while CloneDroid is the "better" not I find myself picking up TR Sixshot more so he wins out.
My only major nitpick with Hexatron are the small hands, otherwise it's a fantastic figure. I can definitely see how some would be put off by the detailing on it however. I can't comment on Titans Return Sixshot, I got the Takara Legends version since I preferred the head and helmet on that version. It's pretty much G1 Sixshot with a lot of added articulation. Which isn't a bad thing, I really enjoy the toy. Also to note, I don't have the Dr. Wu kit so I can't comment on that. I'll also throw Fanstoys Hydra into the mix since I recently got it and I think it's great. It all comes down to what you prefer between stylized or very G1, and your price range.
Most of my display is CHUG scale. The TR fits in better. I bought the Greatshot version of the Hexatron mold and it just seems outsized compared to everything else.
Isn't Sixshot supposed to be pretty tall? Like eye to eye or even taller than Ultra Magnus? He would scale just about perfect w/ CW UM but probably not with Siege UM
I only have Sixshot so I can’t compare. But I would advise that if you decide to go with TR, make sure you get the 2nd run with the modified knees. Though I’m not sure if there’s a difference in product code on the box to differentiate the 2 releases.
He's supposed to be eye to eye with Magnus and the TR version is right there. The Hexatron is a bit taller.
I know I can usually make up my own mind, but this has been quite a tough coice for me. I saw - that's part of what prompted this thread. I never knew that existed - it looks more tasteful. The detailing doesn't bother me, but I do think MMC went just a bit overboard with it. The Takara version does have great coloring. I really think it would be great if they still had the Hasbro - toy colors, Takara - toon colors thing going on. Mine, too. Which is part of the conundrum: I think TR would fit in better, but at the same time - as simple as this sounds - the waist swivel on MMC's is tempting. The slight height difference really wouldn't bother me. Thanks to everyone for the responses so far!
Display: Fans Toys Hydra. This figure is the definitive Sixshot in almost every mode (save jet mode) but the transformation is rough. I've had him displayed in bot mode without transforming him for about four months now and he's still bringing me a ton of joy. I love transforming my figures, but this is one of few that is good looking enough that I can deal without going through the often joyless steps required to bring him to his alt modes. That said, I transformed him about 24 times upon first receiving him and didn't have any breaks, though I would caution against going into wolf mode as one of the steps will lead to breakage even if you're careful. Display and Play: Terminus Hexatron Continuum My long time Sixshot, this figure's two short comings are that he has odd proportions in robot mode and he doesn't come with the sword and sheathes included with the regular Terminus Hexatron release. The transformation is the complete opposite of Hydra's--it's fun and intuitive. The alt modes are okay, and the paint is phenomenal, arguably some of the best I've ever gotten on a transforming figure. I'm not sure I needed to "upgrade" to Hydra as he turned out to be more of a sidegrade, so this one's a good all-around choice. Nostalgia: G1 Yeah, he's a brick, but he's a beautiful brick with few flaws other than his articulation. A perfect MP of Sixshot would be something that copies this guy and adds articulation, as the Fans Toys version should have done. Multi-changers are done best when they're deceptively simple. Playable: LG, TR I passed on these. They looked fine, but weren't quite up to my standards. I read reports of paint chipping and loose joints that put me off, but I still kinda want to get them. So, I can't quite give an opinion on either but have seen pictures that just make me wish they'd had the budget given to Siege figures. Legends class: Iron Factory Shadow Tengu (I think?) Another pass. I would have gotten him, but he sold out and is now expensive, I think. Not a huge priority for me as I don't really collect legends class figures. Everything I have heard about the figure says it's excellent, so if you made this choice you'd probably be happy. Between the two, I'd go for Terminus Hexatron or one of his variations.
Here are some alt mode pics. I don't care much for giant gun modes with TF, so I make do with an armored speedboat/submersible instead
