ironhide and ratchets faces would work as faceplates but those as mouths is just as bad as the new sonic
The lack of lips makes it's look strange to us, but if you start adding lips, then it looks like this below or the lips that Prime had which look worse. I'd rather have whatever Ratchet is sporting in the render. I honestly don't even think it looks that bad. Meh, I guess I'm tired of seeing the weird ass faces we kept getting with the Bayverse Bots—these Knightverse Bots are mild in comparison.
I agree. I was a little on-the-fence when renders and art of these designs first started popping up, but I'm really beginning to like them. They do a good job capturing the smooth and simple look of the G1 faces, but without giving them literal lips. These "mouths" look like some form of technology that alien robots could really communicate with. Lips always look kind of hokey, because they wouldn't function for beings constructed out of metal. These do a good job looking alien, but not too outlandish (like some of the Bay Decepticons). People also have to keep in mind that these renders are shown in the default position. Honestly, looking at a human with a blank expression can be a bit creepy too. In motion, they looked better. I do think a sequel could stand to refine these faces a bit (once they have a bigger budget), but I think they're solid. I definitely prefer them to most of Bay's faces (as someone mentioned above, much better than Bay's Ironhide or Ratchet).
Ratchet, maybe. But Bayverse Ironhide is unironically better than this Ironhide. Then again none of these models were meant to be more than blink-and-you’ll-miss cameos, so judging them in detail is a little unfair. Ratchet’s body is really awesome, though. I will say the most distracting factor is their itty bitty pupils. Optimus and Bumblebee have these great big, expressive and friendly, eyes that look great and in Op’s Case especially evoke the classic solid colour G1 eyes. Racer and Ratchet in particular really could’ve used larger, less creepy irises.
These were characters designed with VERY VERY little screentime in mind. No need to go all-out and design intricate faces for the literal few seconds they'll be on screen.
Why would they even bother? What’s the point? Lmao Yeah, plus none of them even got a closeup view or anything during the film. No need for extra detail which is why there’s a lack of lips and such on the CGI render.
Woow it's almost as if...they weren't meant to last longer than 5 seconds worth of screen time. Hate them or not, they were there because Travis really wanted to express his love to the franchise by giving them enough time to do their thing and then leave before people found out where the CGI budget went. It makes me a little ticked off that Paramount could have at least given the movie a couple million dollars more to patch stuff up, but the camera work was great to hide the lack of detail. Bay would have just said "For the Autobots let's just have Bee and Prime so we can put the rest into America's military for more boom-boom". I promise you that once the sequel films come with more budget the rest of the Autobots and Decepticons will look 100x better then they did in Bumblebee. No 'skull faces', no reused assets, no obvious cheap stock fx.
That’s pretty much why people like these designs. It’s out of pure nostalgia. I do give them some slack because the designers at ILM had to rush these, but they are hardly better than Bayverse. I would much rather have the Bayverse designs than whatever these are.
