Snagged this nice YOTG Prime for $10. It is complete but has one glaring omission - Prime is missing his eyes. The complete eye/light piping piece is missing. While it does look kinda cool, I would like to get a replacement. Is there a 3D printing place that makes replacement parts?
First off, $10 is an excellent price. Was it a yard sale find? Have you tried searching round shapeways on the odd chance someone else had the same issue?
To answer your question, no there isn't a 3d printing service that offers replacement parts. I have occasionally seen replacement parts on Thingiverse for specific figures but that requires someone to have needed the part and gone through the effort of 3d modelling it themselves. If I owned the figure, I could design a replacement part but without having it in hand, I'd be guessing at too much and couldn't guarantee the piece would fit. And then you'd want it printed in a clear but solid material which means resin so you'd either need someone with a resin printer (mine is fdm so it wouldn't be suitable) or to order it from Shapeways.
You can look into making one out of epoxy putty. I’ve used Tamiya epoxy putty, using the head as a mold, the putty fills-in where the eyes would be and just paint after. You can find videos in YouTube. Hope that helps
This. Just do this. Get some instamorph/epoxy/clay/whatever and just mash it in there. Pull it out, trim it down, maybe paint the eyes, done. WAY cheaper and easier than trying to find a print.
Do you have Primus? Mine is missing his feet, I assume they wouldn't be too hard to design. Anyway, LMK if you can help me out. Might go down that route then. Thanks for the suggestion!
I don't and feet would be much harder to model than a replacement eyepiece. Eyes are pretty much just a few polygons and a bunch of measurements. Feet would be a much more complicated model and even more measurements. I recently modeled a rocket launcher for Newage Manero based on the one that came with Maketoys Downbeat and that was pretty much a day long project and I didn't even need to be exact with that. I'd need to be much more exact with replacement parts.
my suggestion would be try to find a junker copy of the Laser Prime mold on Ebay and take its eye piece.
