Just when I think that people are being polite. That was a non-serious post about trying to retcon the Godzilla into the 2014 continuity in response to a post talking about a cameo of the 1998 character. I am not a Godzilla fan and have literally zero malice for the 98 version, so how can that joking spitball be "petty" or "revisionist?" I even said that a 98 cameo would be pretty cool.

I mean naturally as it stands the 98 Godzilla is the goddamned Godzilla of that world, but that post was specifically about the idea of a merger that took two movies into account — which also naturally is not the only way to do a cameo. In the context of the two movies, '14 Godzilla is the one with sequels, a known history dating farther back in the 20th century, is being monitored by Monarch and is currently known as Godzilla so in this hypothetical he would take precedence as "the" Godzilla. That's not a dismissal of the 98 creature.

Did you ignore my advocacy for the movie/creature or just not notice? Oh, and I would kill for a 98 Godzilla toy because that thing is a pretty nice character design.

That probably read angrier than intended. I was more using your comments as a jumping off point to weigh in, rather than attempting to discredit you personally!

I think it's best not to have Tristar Godzilla cameo in contemporary Godzilla movies, especially if it were handled as Final Wars did it. Even trying to be respectful I can't imagine any way to include it without de-legitimizing it, and frankly it gets enough flak. They'd be as well off licensing other kaiju from Toho as paying Sony for the rights to their Godzilla.

I have to wonder what the hold up is. I'm sure it would sell.

I like 98, just not as Godzilla. Seriously, rename it and I would love more movies with it.
Plus the show is all kinds of awesome.
As a monster movie, it's OK. It has its problems but it's kinda like a throwback to stuff like the Beast from 20,000 fathoms.

Considering that Zilla was in final wars and Toho wants to do spin-off movies with other Godzilla monsters. I would not mind if they made a movie just called Zilla give that creature its own little spin-off

That being said Zilla is a bad Godzilla design but I feel it is a good design for a new monster and I feel it is the only good thing about the 1998 film since I honestly don't like that movie. Overall I feel Zilla is a cool monster with a good design but not in a good movie or a good design for Godzilla.

Anyway it seems we might have some bad news Godzilla 2 on Track for Disappointing Godzooky-Sized Box Office Debut

Box office tracking doesn't always determine how a movie will ultimately do at the box office. I mean both Godzilla 2014 and Kong Skull Island were said to have low box office opening but they did a lot better then expected. I mean sure KOTM's box office record can go either way no doubt about it but still I think we should ultimately wait for the final results especially since other sites have box office tracking that say otherwise along with the major hype it has going for it.

Hopefully it’s a slow burn box office then, that keeps going long after release.

Gotta say, it makes me happy to see that most people are ok with Zilla these days. The movie is fun but pretty hokey. But that’s pretty much every Godzilla movie in a nutshell.

I do wish the fight in Final Wars had been better. For fans of Zilla like me, it was a giant letdown to see my boy get wasted in 2 seconds flat.
But I imagine even people that hated Zilla at the time may have wanted a more satisfying beat down too. Any word on why it was so short? Just the complication of having a dude in a suit trying to interact with a CGI creature or what?

Toho treated Zilla as one might do a fly; a nuisance with far too much presence and yet not enough worth to be acknowledged beyond the splat. They LOATHED him, my guy. The only good thing he ever did in their eyes was make Zilla Jr, who was relatively likable. They really and truly LOATHED him 0.0

I didn't see the new Godzilla doing so well considering it is coming out in the eve of two of the biggest ever franchises. Endgame is bound to have a long box office lifespan.

I do hope that the new movie does substantially better than Kong: Skull Island because not only do I absolutely loathe that movie but from that loathe I want Godzilla to totally murder Kong in their vs. flick. I may not be a giant monster fan, but let's put it this way I had a good theater experience (1998) and a great one (2014) from Godzilla but Kong gave me my absolute worst... and I saw TLK in theaters.
Is Zilla its official designation when it is not being called Godzilla, or is that a shorthand? I saw Final Wars on TV and found that scene absolutely awful. 98 deserves a better movie reappearance.

Which is again why I wouldn't mind a cameo in Legendary. Imagine just a few shots of that thing in modern CGI and perhaps with a slightly updated design. It would be cool and encourage the coexistence. (I would rather there not be a confrontation between the two creatures, however.)
Deeply ironic that they used a far worse movie to try to throw shade at a slightly competently made one. I can count on three fingers the number of Japanese Godzilla movies better than 1998.

I think it might do well in the box office I have noticed a good amount of hype. While I do like the 2014 movie I was always wondering how the box office would be for the movies after it since 2014 had some misleading trailers and lots of people complained about monsters fight also Godzilla screen time.

I like final wars but that is a complain I have is that almost all of the fights in that movie are very short. On the bright side Zilla at least had a chance Hedoarh a monster that almost killed Godzilla was taken down way too easy in final wars. Gigan almost killed Godzilla as well and he didn't last long either.

Which I always found hypocritical of them because they signed off on the design for Zilla. ‘98 director Dean Devlin & creature designer, Patrick Tatopolous had to travel to TOHO’s studio in Japan & present a sculpture of their take on Godzilla. The TOHO reps grilled them on the changes but ultimately gave the design their approval.

If they truly loathe Zilla, they have only themselves to blame.

The 2014 Godzilla didn't have legs, and most summer movies aren't as leggy as holiday ones. The movie will do fine, especially overseas, but it doesn't sound like it will do "fine" enough for Warner Bros to greenlight more sequels.

My AMC hasn't posted any Dolby Cinema times yet. They haven't for Rocketman either, so hopefully that doesn't mean they are giving Rocketman the larger screens like they already are in parts of the country.

If all we get are Godzilla, Kong, KOTM, and GvsK, I’m okay with that. It will have been a good run for Legendary Godzilla & I get the feeling it’s going to be a long time before anyone tops KOTM.

The East Coast has completely given up on this movie. Not a single theater showing Dolby Cinema, the best I could find was Prime 3D. I can probably get IMAX tickets still but I don't want to see it in IMAX, I want to see it in Dolby. I have to dedicate an entire day to driving down to the IMAX theater. This sucks.

Zilla's role in Final Wars makes me actually cringe. It's like "Ha! Take that you ugly CGI Godzilla from a bad movie! Got 'im!" in... a bad Godzilla movie with ugly CGI. It's ridiculously petty and gives me secondhand embarassment.
