I sanded the bottom of the chin so that it wouldn’t be longer than the helmet itself. I sanded the sides (cheek bones) of the face to take away the roundness. I scribed some panel lines on the face to give more cartoon accuracy.

A little while ago, someone on Shapeways pm'd me asking me to make a replacement face for this guy. Admittedly, I did miss his request and responded a week later. That day I modeled Springer's face in Blender, since then I have been fiddling with this design and tweaking bits here and there. I am still learning and am an amateur, but I think he's pretty ok for now. I do not own Openplay Big Spring so this is the most I could do knowing 0 about how the face attaches to the head. If you guys could help me I'd be more than happy to complete this project and get it uploaded. :)

I just need to know how the face connects to the head and if I need to consider any light piping/existing eyes. And of course how large the face is (1-2 cm tall, wide, etc.)

I hadn't planned to take Springer's head apart but here we go... LOL

Here are a few pictures so you can see what the head looks like disassembled. The face has two pegs in the back of it as well as holes for existing eyes. It's not light piped though and honestly I'm not sure I would constrain your model to working around them. Separate eyes would be easier for painting the face but I'm not sure matching these little sliver eyes is worth it.

I included a MM ruler in the pictures but I'll try to add some actual measurements in a moment, but I hope some others will as well so that there's some consensus on them...

    IMG_0524.jpg IMG_0523.jpg IMG_0522.jpg

Measuring the two posts on the back of the face - I show their center as being 10mm apart and that the posts are right around 1mm in diameter.

Here's another photo with the eyes and the back of the face against the ruler. The eyes I'm showing as being 10mm from corner to corner which makes sense as the corners of the eyes do line up with the posts. I'm hoping the ruler will help but it's not a straight on shot since I can't hold it and photograph it at the same time.

    IMG_0526.jpg

And a quick sketch with the measurements I got from the face I have. I should point out that I did modify mine some. The distances I measured though should be pretty close to what I had originally but I'd love someone else to measure and see what they get - particularly if they have an untouched face.

    sketch-face.jpg

The eyes... I have no idea how to measure those and the drawing is not 100% accurate to their shape. they have hard angles in spots and gentle slopes in others.

If you look at the helmet without the face, you can see there's probably wiggle room in some of those measurements from top to bottom and from the cheeks down, but there's very little room along the brow ridge.

In an ideal world, maybe there's somebody near you with one you can examine in person.

After all that, I decided that a clearer picture of the helmet was in order since that really guides the face more than the shape of the original face. There's the contour at the top and the width of the opening. You can also see where the existing eyes come through. the bottom opening although even with the mouth more or less has no function as far as the face is concerned. And on that note I'll drop out unless there's a question I can answer.

Thank you, this helps out a lot and is a good starting point. I think for now I'll forego the eyes entirely, as it provides a whole lot of issues. I do need a few more measurements (Side Profile) but these should suffice for now.

I already reassembled him but the next chance I get I'll measure the depth of the cavity in the helmet. The current face doesn't fill it out.

The face you designed above looks worlds better (to me) than what it came with. The main issue would be the brow line contour isn't there so it wouldn't fit.

And I can't speak for others but I would have no heartache at losing the existing eyes. I can put them and the original face away together. LOL

Making some alterations. Filed the chest seam smooth, swapped the feet because I think they look better, adjusted some tabs so they lock in properly, and altered the helmet so the head tucks away properly in alt modes.
Still more to do, but he's coming along nicely.

Is that Saltus’s head on Big Spring? Does it actually fit or is it just placed on? If it fits and you can still transform him that’s awesome.

The "adapter" is a piece of 3mm foamcore, cut to fit into the base of Saltus' head. So easy it is almost ridiculous.

    I haven't tried transforming yet.

    EDIT: Transformation works fine.
In vehicle mode, only one very specific positioning allows for ground clearance, but once I had figured that out, no problem at all.

Awesome. I think that might actually be the best of both worlds. Of course, to get it you’ve got to buy both figures... you could always sell Saltus with just the one head, I guess...

...or find someone who is willing to let go of the ox style head on their Saltus.

As I mentioned in the Saltus thread, this experiment started when I thought the sleeker ox head clashed with the bulky features of Saltus otherwise, and thus installed the alternative G1 head on Saltus.

But now, I'll be keeping both figures, one is my Rookie Springer and the other is my Hardened Warrior Springer.
Both figures are amazing in their own right.

Curious lack of 5mm mounting points on the Siege Springer- the guns look idiotic in that position on the ground mode.

Oh and that swapping of the feet works brilliantly if that is easy to do it look like something everyone should do with their Big Spring.
