Asking for everyone's opinion on this as some vary. In your opinion who would you say are the 3 main Autobots and Decepticons. It'll help me make a decision on which authentic MPs to buy. Thanks in advance.
Depends what you mean by “main”. If it’s about roles, then Optimus and Megatron will probably account for two of the six - oh, and I can’t go on without mentioning Rodimus and Star Saber, while we are talking about leaders. After that, we’ve got Starscream and Soundwave for the Decepticons, and of course I can’t skip my main man Shockwave, although some might hahah. For the Autobots there’s the likes of Ironhide who was a fairly prominent chap, and Ultra Magnus. That’s a few to choose from anyway. If it’s about aesthetics or transformations etc., then yeah, you’re in for a few opinions! Welcome to the boards.
In reality, it’s Optimus, Bumblebee, and Windblade for the Autobot side. Megatron, Soundwave, and I would say Starscream for the Decepticons. If you’re taking about MPs, I’d recommend the unusual Autobots like G2 Sideswipe, Artfire, and one of the Datsun bros. For Decepticons, MP Megatron, Soundwave, and Shockwave seem to be many’s favorites.
As far as really nice MPs for Bots and Cons: AUTOBOTS:, Optimus Prowl Sideswipe,Sunstreaker or Wheeljack DECEPTICONS: Megatron Soundwave Shockwave+
Based on most popular or most iconic/familiar to the world would probably be... Autobots: Optimus Prime Grimlock Bumblebee Decepticons: Megatron Soundwave Starscream or Shockwave.
I guess what I mean by "main," I would agree with MINDVVIPE, most popular or most iconic/familiar. Not really the character's rank or position or anything like that.
The main Autobots are pretty obviously Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. I'd say Grimlock has the strongest case for being the third in terms of being iconic, but if you prefer Hot Rod, Ratchet, or Ironhide, they would fit the bill nicely as well. For the Decepticons, Megatron and Starscream for sure, with Shockwave and Soundwave equally worthy of third place. I'd say Soundwave is slightly more iconic. The only Masterpiece figure that I own is the G2 version of Bumblebee, and I can vouch for him being a quality figure. The gold paint just makes him even sweeter.

Well I've compiled my must have Autobots and Decpticons, its not quite 3 of each but I'm no really bothered about any others.
Autobots : Optimus , bumble bee , Ironhide Decepticons : Megatron , Starscream & Soundwave That’s about as cut and dry as you’ll get .
For me? I collect Primes and Megatrons. From there I get the Classic Pretender characters. (Starscream, Bumblebee, Jazz, and Grimlock). Finally, Ratchet. The Marvel comics escalated him to one of if not the favorite character of mine. Marvel issues 5-8 should be required reading for getting into the fandom If I had to add another Decepticon, it’d be Shockwave or Soundwave. Shockwave has had more impact in more continuities, but Soundwave has pets.
Total agreement here. Even though Shockwave is my all time favorite, I would put Soundwave above him as far as public recognition goes. Good thing there are awesome official MP's of all six (seven)!
Megatron, Soundwave and Starscream for the Decepticons. For the Autobots, it’s a hard choice for third place. Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and... Hot Rod? Grimlock? Jazz? Ironhide? In terms of an MP collection of core characters, I think it’d be worth adding MP-29 or MP-29+ while you wait for a new Starscream to accompany MP-36. Nothing wrong with a top four there For Autobots, I think a group of 5 would look pretty sweet. Prime, Bumblebee, Hot Rod, Grimlock, maybe stick in Prowl while we wait for an official Jazz.
I'm not going to count OP and Megs because that's a given. -Bumblebee -Grimlock -Ratchet/Jazz/Ironhide/Wheeljack/Prowl, whoever's your preference. I can't choose between Ratchet and Prowl. -Starscream -Soundwave -Shockwave
Main two are easy, Optimus Prime and Bumblebee for the bots, Megatron and Starscream for the cons. Third main con would probably be Soundwave, though Shockwave tends to be pretty important pretty often too. Third main bot is harder. Lately, Windblade seems to be taking that role, but throughout the franchise, Prowl, Jazz, Ironhide, Ratchet, Grimlock and Jetfire have all been viable answers
Soundwave is easily one of the most recognizable to even non-fans because of his voice; anyone who thinks he's not going to be on this list is putting their nose too close to the glass.
