This is the movie I want to see the most this year. However like with all movies coming out I'm waiting until the 4K home release, for various reasons. I'm thinking of pre-ordering the steelbook from Best Buy when it goes up.

Don't feel bad, I thought the same thing until I went back to get a better look. Also there is a slightly longer version of this trailer.

The foot massage was pretty amusing. Looks like some light hearted fun after the dramatic finale that was Endgame.

Speaking of which, I just realized how quickly after Endgame this movie is coming. Considering how much of a money maker Captain Marvel was a month later, I am a little worried for this movie. Pokémon is big and all, but it's going to be a clash of giants before the giant monsters even show up. I do somewhat expect both movies to kick Godzilla's ass.

Pokémon was a huge global phenomenon for a long time, and even after that died down it remained one of the best selling video game series of all time with the same kind of broad demographic appeal as the MCU. So yeah, it may we’ll give Endgame a run for its money.

Godzilla KOTM has been getting serious hype with plenty of people getting excited and that it's predicted that it'll do very well in China for it as well so I wouldn't come to the conclusion that Godzilla will get his tail handed to him by both Endgame and Pokemon especially since the hype of Endgame would've died down by then. I'm not just saying this is a big Godzilla fan either. If anything I think Detective Pikachu will suffer more from Endgame given that it'll be two weeks from it then Godzilla will but even then I doubt it'll be by that much given Pokemon's status in pop culture as a whole.

Was? Did you not see the masses playing Pokémon go 2 years ago?

Pokémon is still huge and with the new games around the corner, will continue to be huge.

    Nothing gonna stop this Poketrain

I did, but I was 10 or 11 when Pokemon Red and Blue hit and I don’t think Go reached quite the same heights. Though its popularity is no mean feat by any measure and the brand’s staying power is probably the envy of every developer in town.

From a Video game sales wiki...

"In terms of software sales, Pokemon is the second best-selling game franchise, having sold over 309 million units as of November 2018, behind only Mario. In addition, Pokémon Go is the most-downloaded mobile game, with over 1 billion downloads. The Pokémon video game series has shifted a total of over 1.31 billion units in retail sales and official downloads."

Red and blue was apparently 30/50 million depending where you look on google.

here's the link, it shows some nice graphs showing the sales figures Pokémon

Pokemon Go was free on a device that almost every sentient being in the developed world already owned, Red and Blue and basically every other Pokemon game ever, were on a range of different handhelds over the years that required specific buy in. And I'm not saying Pokemon Go wasn't huge - it clearly was - but it looked to me nothing like the Pokemania of the 90s.

Either way, unless Detective Pikachu is wall to wall Growlithe shit - and even then it would still be better than Sonic because Jesus fucking Christ - its gonna break some records in a big, big way. Looking forward to it.

I find it amazing that the reality here is that this Pokemon movie is looking so insanely good...by completely omitting the entire core gameplay of battling pokemon in the same way the anime has done for years. I mean sure, there's Pikachu vs Charizard, but that's not really a battle given Detective Pikachu's problem is he can't use electric attacks and Tim isn't a trainer. Instead, it's just this world where pokemon battling is still a big thing and happens...it just happens for the most part off screen with the limit being what Tim once aspired to be but has failed at.

Instead, this is a film about Pokemon and humans co-existing in the same world. I think where the trailers are really singing this film's praises is that the incorporation of these CGI creatures is wholly natural. I dare say this almost is like a modern day Who Framed Roger Rabbit (and if you people haven't looked up how that film was made, it's insane what the production team had to do in blending 2D animation with 3D physical objects) - sure, with advances in CGI this isn't something like WFRR in technical mastery, but the same idea is there in selling the idea that these 3D renders have mass and presence in a believable way.

Godzilla is pure camp without the staying power of two of the world's biggest franchises. A month after Captain Marvel first hit theaters it was still in the top two at the box office and one might consider it a smaller MCU movie. Audiences are getting savvy. What will they do when Godzilla's an Emmerich-esque (don't mind the 1998 version, by the way) cheese and CG fest? Probably go to the movies of franchises many people love.

Urm...Pikachu uses Thundershock/Bolt and Volt Tackle in the trailers we have seen, specifically the one with Mewtwo in it. Which i believe is trailer 2.

We also see a Blastoise vs's what looks like one of Ghastly's evolutions, possibly even Ghastly itself.

I wouldn't say the film is completely omitting it, but it clearly isn't the focus of the film, which in a franchise about what are essentially Battle Pets, it is quite surprising.

True, Go was free, but it did and does have microtransactions, and it has made a huge amount of money. End of the day, as i was saying, Pokemon is still a very big franchise, and while it's had it's ups and downs, it shows no signs of stopping any time soon.

And yeah same here, cannot wait to see this film.

I don't think it'll do badly, but Legendary has certainly chose to release it at a bad time.

Remember, we also have Aladdin this month, as well as John Wick. We might see Godzilla doing well a few weeks after release, but then saying that Toy Story 4 is next month.

Yeah, while the Godzilla fans may rejoice and think it'll do well, it honestly doesn't have the name to hold it up, where as, lets face it, everyone will be watching Endgame, Pikachu, and Aladdin. Godzilla really needs to get good reviews for it to do well.

I did a little research into what Detective Pikachu is and that's his gimmick - he can talk and he's a good detective, but he can't do normal Pikachu things like electrocute people. That's the case in his original game - I didn't read on from what I found because from what I can tell, they're playing the film pretty damn close to the original game's plotline based on the trailers (especially if you look at Mewtwo's face close up) so spoilers ahoy there.

As for him using Volt Tackle and other moves, I think that's either going to be at the end of the film or perhaps be a flashback when he gets a memory back or something. Probably special case and not something normal like true sanctioned pokemon battle.

Yeah, that's what I meant, sorry if I wasn't clear.

I'm not seeing what's so campy about KOTM. If anything it's the exact opposite of that playing on the theme of Godzilla and his kind evoking more of mythical titans and playing the god theme high as opposed to just a mindless monster slug fest. Also what is so Emmerich about it? Just because it has CGI doesn't mean it's going to be a GINO/Godzilla 98 because it's clear it's no where near going in that direction if that's what you're saying.

I know not everyone's going to be excited for KOTM and I'm not saying you have to love it but what you're saying just feels overly cynical. Especially since the last two Monsterverse movies have done well in the past which means people are wanting more of those movies otherwise why are we even getting KOTM or even Godzilla vs Kong in 2020 at all to begin with? We're at an age where people are becoming more and more accepting of concepts and things that would've been hard for them to swallow but now they do. Like how the idea of a comic cinematic universe and of course a live action Pokemon movie were thought to be impossible in the past but look where we are now. So I don't see how a rebooted monster cinematic universe filled with updated takes on classic monsters and themes is any different.
