Any production studio, big or small, would be walking into a mine field of liability and litigation if they drew fan ideas.

I like this guy here. He talks about why studios don't use fan suggestions or ideas.

Thanks-however, if Paramount and Hasbro did visit, the likelihood of them actually using something would put them in an enormous legal liability. Big media conglomerates like that don't solicit ideas from agentless writers. . .

In the Transformers director's commentary, Michael contemplates the initial fan backlash to the new designs on the Transformers forums. I'd imagine that would include TFW, Seibertron, etc.

Yeah! It's so obvious they keep their ear to the ground to make sure they dont have a hostile uprising that would severely effect sales. It's clearly also why they went the reboot angle with Bumblebee. The backlash the Bayverse had begun to receive required a "return to form" with G1 influence to maintain the core audience it seems... I also recently heard that Bumblebee increased toy sales by 20%... so yeah, I guess maybe listening to the fans is good?

Thank god! There's quite a few fan fiction story ideas I see that are so disconnected from reality that we might be better off letting a passionate creator who is actually competent to do their thing with just a slight bit of input, like Knight did, which I think was a great combination of crowd pleaser and his own personal vision. It's only a problem when certain creator(s) are allowed full license for 10 years to potentially drive a franchise into the ground

I do think things like polls which have very clear numbers and actionable decisions that can be made from them is something that they'd make use of, rather than long pointless circular discussions

Absolutely. Let me add to that, that, I hope they take right message for once. I'm sure they're well aware of all these people in the fandom that have been passionately arguing, for years, about how Transformers should look in live action. G1 fan service is great and all, but, what people loved about Bumblebee and want more of is the substance, the heart of it, an emotionally fulfilling viewing experience to go along with it. That's what people remember from G1 as well, even if they don't realise it sometimes. That's what I hope that whoever's keeping an eye here takes away.

we know hasbro listens to feedback for toylines, with them having more control over the movies i'd imagine they'd try to please fans, this doesn't mean taking ideas for movies, but rather what direction the movies may go overall

ps: i guess clarify the group in hasbro making the toylines isn't the same one that influences the movies

That's interesting about the toy sale increase. I wonder if that's just Bumblebee toys or all TF toys, or just all movie toys...

That would be the equivalent of watching a two and a half hour dumpster fire of shelf-warmers.

    Heeeck no.

That's not what the question is asking. Him visiting it and taking the sentiment on the forums into account are two different things.

First of all; You went off topic first.

Secondly; it doesn't matter. They get their ideas from wherever they please, our opinion has been noted and ignored so many times before.

Are you crazy? How in any stretch of the imagination was what I said off topic? It was literally the definition of being on topic.

Second, if it doesn't matter, why bother replying?

Because our intellectual property rights are sort of weird it allows someone that just wants to be a jerk about things to sue. Crazy as it sounds there have been lawsuits launched over crazy stuff like creative people spit balling ideas with each other over drinks. So the guys behind the Venture Brothers will always tell you if you have a great idea please for the love of god don't tell us because then we can't use it even if it was something that rolling around in our head before you said it.

Pretty sure they don't drop in to listen to us because we've been asking for a good Transformers movie forever and it took Bumblebee before we actually got one.

Please anyone correct me, but from what I understand intellectual property lawsuits can only have a basis if there’s a trademark on it (?).

And, to be honest, some elements of fan-fiction find their way into these big studio movies.

You also have to consider the vast amount of fan ideas out there. We probably read a good amount of them, but I highly doubt the screenwriters spend as much browsing forums as we do. Even if the greatest idea ever has been posted by a fan, it's extremely unlikely that the filmmakers will stumble upon it, if it's buried on page 47 of some random thread about "should Rampage come back in Transformers 6?" Even if they were to read through the fanfiction section, they'd have to comb through a lot before they found something worth using.

I've heard people say companies like Hasbro, Star Wars, and DC should hire a team of people to scour fan theories for ideas. The thing is, they'd have pay that team to do that. And that's not even accounting for the already mentioned royalties they'd'd have to pay the fans who wrote the ideas. An individual director or writer might be able to take a fan idea without anyone knowing (I'm sure this has happened), but word would get out if they hired a team of people to gather ideas. In the end, it's cheaper and quicker to just to hire a professional writer to create ideas, or put together a focus group of fans who can act as creative consultants. Browsing fan theories would be a lot more time and effort than it would be worth.

It's kind of like browsing Facebook pages until you find someone giving away free clothes. But the only person giving away clothes in your size is several states away, and you'd have to buy gas to get over there. That's just unnecessary when you could go to Goodwill and buy clothes for an affordable price.

They DO watch these forums but I doubt they take ideas from here.

They’ve been watching these forums since 2007. Rewatch behind the scenes on the 07 film. TFW2005 was legit shown.
