I'd argue that these are way more overengineered, between the massive panels the inner workings are t i n y (I'll assume carried on from AoE and TLK)! Bayverse at least kept some consistency in the size of parts.

I would so buy MP/MPMs of these. Would love to see what they dream up for Sideswipe and Sunstreaker.

This is a much more reasonable and respectful way to Translate the character.

Ok everyone, I’ve cleaned out a number of posts that aren’t moving the conversation forward in a productive way.

I know that shifts in aesthetics are hot button issues at times, but people come to this thread for information, not back and forths such as we’ve seen in here. ;)

Any questions/concerns, please feel free to send me a PM.

What? Bayverse has the same exact smaller parts you're referring to. It's just that these designs have larger panels that cover most of the smaller parts. Having consistency between the size of parts is just a made up solution for a made up problem you created so you can sell your narrative better, otherwise, this exact type of design philosophy is used for many live-action mechs.

exactly! each character, in a single glance, is instantly recognizable. that is very important for investment of an audience in their character development, and tracking their movement during fast-paced action

These still strike me as far too cartoony to take as live-action. They just feel too much like design work for a game in the style of War for/Fall of Cybertron. And on that merit, I think they're alright. But as live-action designs, they honestly fall too far into looking like cartoon characters in ways that just kind of make me wonder why even bother making a live action film. At this point, I'd honestly rather just an animated feature film, but studios are also too afraid to do that (maybe Spiderverse will sway that opening with its success; I'd frankly be happy for that).

There's a happy medium to be found between this and "Bayverse", and I'll be thrilled to see it should the day arrive. But for now, I still side with these designs just not working as live-action. I liked Bayverse, but agree it's rather busy, especially as an artist who might want to replicate the style even if I also think the busy looks helped disguise the transformation cheats on the models. This goes a bit too far in the other direction in being too simple to sell the designs as working in the "real world", especially with so many large, blocky portions. Ah well.

These are all really great designs and I hope to see them in future. Love hearing the stories behind and process. It’s impressive given the time. It was an action by instinct to do right and you can see it.

Heck yes. What would they turn into though?
Absolutely. They’re so definable and have the iconic recognisable shapes.
I hope they do show up in later films. It’d be great to see how they act and how their characters interact with each other.
Well there were 7 ships landing at the end of the film. So there’s two more autobots that would show up. Hound would be cool to see. Myself I really wanna see jazz. I feel if done well everyone would love him.
Well I guess that could be hard to determine since these are made purely alien. If given more time to be designed with earth modes it could look more real.

Everytime I see these designs, I can\'t help but love them more and more. They do such a good job at staying true to the classic G1 apperance of these characters, while being updated just enough so that they can work in live-action! I\'ve said a million times, but I pray everyday for the chance that I will one day see a Transformers film that stars these designs for the characters.

I guess that begs the question whether or not having cartoony designs in a live-action movie is a bad thing. I feel like the bold quote could apply to a lot of franchises. Why make live-action Spider-Man movies if you're going to put him in red and blue spandex from the comics? Isn't the idea of a guy who turns into a giant green monster kind of silly in live-action? Why make a live-action Batman movie? Isn't a guy who dresses like a bat kind of comic booky? Those things might work better as cartoons too.

Something like Pacific Rim (mainly the first one) does a good job making the concept of mecha feel grounded and realistic. I don't really need (or want) that in a Transformers movie though. Embrace the cartoonyness, like most modern franchise movies are learning to do. The idea that everything has to be "realistic-ified" feels very '90s to me. "We can't make Godzilla look like Godzilla, let's make him look like a dinosaur". We're finally starting to come out of this phase, where Hollywood is afraid to make stuff from comics or cartoons look like stuff from comics or cartoons.

Also, I don't think the Bayverse designs were any more realistic than these. I feel like the amount of moving parts made them feel cartoony in a different way (I actually get a video game vibe from some of those designs). My brain knows nothing in reality has that many moving parts, especially combat machines, which actually tend to be somewhat armored and blocky. These look a bit unrefined because they were designed in a short time, but I'd argue designs like Blitzwing and Bumblebee are a perfect happy medium between cartoony/fun and realistic.

I hope we get those side stories someday.  It is sad, and also brilliant, that we got so little of them in the end product.
