Is It Green? Is It Blue? I could not for the life of me find a good colour for Dreadwind's wings. But, after only a little experimentation, I found a very simple recipe I thought I'd share. Four parts X-14 Sky Blue to one part X-15 Light Green. It's a seamless match with the Reprolabels. I'm about half way done painting. A few more recoats and some detailing is all he needs before clear. It's odd, this guy's has a real strong Leozack vibe without the purple.
Armaments Abound! These are by no means done, but they have their main colours in place. More details to come. I don't think I'll try to recolour the translucent parts. They're a fair match as they are.
We Ain't Done Yet But my oh my are we close I can't transform him until I clear coat him, but I'm hoping he'll be done this week. Always more to come.
How to Combine Dreadwing This isn't my idea. Lots of people have done this before me. This fan mode works with any versions of the Classics Jetfire and Universe Silverbolt molds as far as I know. No mods necessary. Darkwing Start off in robot mode, first folding his hands away. Next, raise his arms out to the sides, then curl his arms in at the elbows 90 degrees. Then, rotate his arms at his bicep swivels, not his shoulders, pointing his hands straight down. Now point his feet straight out to the sides by using his thigh swivels, fold his feet away, and pull his knees up into his armpits. Swing the arms down at the shoulder as far as possible. Finally, fold out his rear two landing gear, fold out his rear stabilizer fins, and plug his gun onto his back, pointing down toward his butt. At this point, you can turn the head around 180 degrees to hide the face, but there is a strong chance of the paint chipping on his helmet if you do that. Now, onto the other guy. Dreadwind Start off in jet mode, and transform the shoulders as if you were transforming him into robot mode. Next fold the rear stabilizer wings flat against his rear wing. You can have the big rocket gun backpack thing on if you like, there won't be any clearance issues. You also won't need his front landing gear. Combination There is only one point of connection for this combination. The long flat panel that sticks out of between the robot mode feet of Dreadwind's jet mode (white, on my version)... Note the jagged horizontal line half way along the panel ...is wedged between Darkwing's backpack (purple) and his butt (grey). It's a tight fit, but it should go in there. Don't force anything. Be careful to ensure that Dreadwind's rear wings go underneath Darkwing's wings. Not inserted: jagged line not touching Darkwing Inserted: jagged line touching Darkwing I think they hold together pretty well. I don't think the connection can hold much weight, so I recommend picking this combination up only by the middle. I also like to put the halves of Dreadwind's handgun into Darkwing's hands. I'd love to see this done with other versions of these molds. Particularly Jetfire and Silverbolt, if anyone can oblige.
Oh that’s dope! Works surprisingly well. Makes the offical dread wind retool make sense if you were able to buy it. Would be cool to see with silverbolt and jetfire. Or even, if you’re rich enough, skyfall and dark sky fire.
Fantastic work. It looks great and thanks for the combination tutorial. I'm loving Botcon Dreadwind since I got him but I think I prefer your colour scheme. The blue is nicely vibrant. I tried customising Dreadwind myself twice. First from the leader Seeker mold with a Shapeways head then I went all Baymovie Optimus and cut the face off a G1 Dreadwind, gluing it to a Titanmaster back. It didn't look too bad on a Nitro Zeus body. Still I'm happy to finally have the Botcon one though your custom does outshine it. Hope to see more customs from you in time.
Thank you, I'm flattered. I'd love to see pictures of your customs, they sound like solid ideas. You certainly will see more at some point.
Well this came out fantastic! The colors are spot on and going the extra effort to make the combiner plane is the cherry on top
Wow! This turned out excellent. Congrats on the great custom. I can only hope mine comes close to yours. This has been fun to watch. Thanks for sharing!!
Addendum Remember the triple-barrelled gattling gun I considered making? The one I showed in-progress of? I couldn't come up with a good way to clamp the 3 barrels in place while the glue set, so I shelved the idea and went with the stock barrel on the fast pack instead. Yesterday, I realized wrapping the barrels in an elastic would work. There is a trade-off in that the elastic would be glued in place too. But, burying said elastic under putty and styrene give a clean appearence and solid construction. I will post more pictures under better lighting soon. But if nothing else, I've had a real dry spell customs-wise and this was just what I needed.
