Well, every major movie ever made, just to get an audience and make money, needs to pander to someone.

That said, I agree it was trying to appease too many different groups, and as a result it ended up pleasing fewer people. It tried continuing the previous threads, but it didn't really, and it tried to appease fans of the earlier films with Easter eggs, Barricade, Simmons, Lennox, and Wheelie, but they felt forced for the most part and mostly weren't necessary, and it rehashed things like Cybertron coming to Earth and humans fighting all Transformers, and it also introduced its own new threads, like Unicron. It tried being too many things to too many people. The previous four films, whatever one thinks of them, all knew exactly what they were and ran with them. TLK seemed like it didn't know what it wanted to be.

Hence the "Of course"-- it's the mechanism by which blockbusters live and breathe. This particular series courts a lot of complaints about pandering to the lowest common denominator which, while possibly relevant to the subject at hand, might fuel a good ol' TFW2005 Flamewar™ if discussed at length. I was bandying around that at the expense of being nonspecific.

EDIT: For clarification-- to what extent catering to certain demographic crosses the line into pandering at the expense of the rest of the audience is, of course, subjective. Not saying that you all would necessarily start a flamewar. Sorry.

For me, AoE has to be my least favorite. I 100% believe that TLK is a worse film, but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit in the theater. AoE, on the other hand made me unreasonably angry. And I mean unreasonably, because a movie, even a bad one, shouldn't make you angry. I really didn't like the oddly repeated imagery in the movie. The frozen dinosaurs look like the Dinobots, but aren't. Lockdown's grenade turns things to metal, like the Seed, but it isn't the Seed. It's like there was a bunch of intentional themes that the movie had, at one point, wanted to connect, but then abandoned some and shuffled the others around.

I also really did not care for them giving up on having robots transform. It's not just the KSI bots that are to blame for this, the on-screen transformations are reduced for everyone. And Lockdown's whole story/motivation made no damn sense. I could say the same about a lot of things in TLK, but I don't know, I had more fun with that movie.

What's funny is that I think its actual marketing campaign was executed fine-- as good or better than that of DOTM, even. There wasn't a single trailer or TV spot that rubbed me the wrong way (I thought the Crew was a marketing joke), but around the third one I got the sense of "Okay, I actually like all of what I'm seeing, but how on Earth is all of this going to come together under a three-hour runtime?" Answer: Irresponsibly.

No, it’s because I watched it that often both as a youngster AND when I was finally able to secure a new VHS copy and later DVD/BluRay as a young adult.

Age of Extinction is the worst because I believe they ran out of money in the budget and then edited the movie to make the unfinished CG transformations of the KSI bots seem like that was how they were supposed to transform.

No, they wasted the budget on the useless gravity ship and then phoned in the KSI robot transformations (ripping off the ending of Super 8 while they were at it) and tried to pass that off as...I don't know what, but it was pretty dumb. And evidently, they agreed since they got rid of it.

The Last Knight. Not because it's the most bad, but because it's the least good.

Yeah, I didn't like aoe much, but it would have been a lot better if it had been followed up by a movie that gave even a little bit of a shit about the other ones. It's 2.5 hours of setting up stories that don't go anywhere, then TLK comes and completely drops the ball on all of that, and proceeds to introduce like 5 or 6 NEW storylines??
