I'd more say... he was just saying what the studio were telling him. It's possible that he was told to keep either option open, depending on what the studio said. It was a prequel when he signed on; the possibility of it being a reboot seems to have happened in post-production (the original cut was pretty explicitly a prequel).

The film itself contains enough cues to go either prequel (e.g. Sector Seven, the Camaro mode, young Simmons, the lack of Megatron in the Cybertron scenes, which Travis explicitly said he took out because of continuity issues) or reboot (e.g. the designs, the lack of frozen Megatron/Allspark in Hoover Dam base). If they went "prequel", they could explain the discrepancies in future movies.

Part of the problem on whether or not it was a reboot or a prequel is that we all knew a reboot was coming at some point after Bumblebee, but we didn't know whether Bumblebee would be the final act in the previous continuity (the Bayverse's "swan song", if you will) or the first in the new continuity. Now, we've gotten explicit confirmation it's the latter.

My point exactly. . .I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in all the behind-the-scenes interactions between Travis and those he answered to. . .

They probably wouldn't have bothered, going by the first five movies.:(

NOT a fan of the bay films but they should have kept it all in ONE continuity.

None of this is helped by them just releasing a 6 movie boxset with Bumblebee included with the Bay movies

If they wanted to do that they should have cared more about continuity while making the first five films.

Fox did the same thing with x-men first class, which also didn’t fit with the series it was supposed to be a prequel to

Can we all not just live in solace with the knowledge that it's a preboot?

It was made to go with the other movies as Days of Future Past demonstrated.
I read an article where Bryan Singer acknowledged discrepancies and he hoped people would look past them for the good of the story.

Discrepancies distract from a coherent story and make it incompatible with the prior stories.

Easy enough for the fans who keep up with his interviews, which he needed to do to make sense of it all. The more common viewer will have it all wrong.

The mute part also defies his self contained universe comment. The consistency and continuation thing is also out the window since he gets his throat tore out by 2 cons.

The Cybertron scenes make up for it all though. Am glad someone finally did that right.
Mad props to Trav for those. All else is forgiven.

As idiotic as they became (come on... most of the consensus is that you have to "turn off your brain" to enjoy it..),why is continuity with the Bay movies even that important?!?!?

technically this isnt true, IF bumblebee was indeed a prequel, we never saw him lose his voice in the movies. comics and other tertiary material can be rendered obsolete my the next primary canon installment.

"While on its own, it was going to be a ton of fun, it just didn't propel the movie forward. It stopped the movie in his tracks for essentially this fun little moment and really wasn’t about our characters or their or their experiences, their growth or their relationship really."

The statement that sums up why Travis worked where Bay didn't. And I love DOTM. But still, this is very true.

    Good god...

Not in the slightest..but I guess playing the underdog/victim role heals all the insecurity.
