Damn!! These will look **so good** with the carbots, particularly in alt mode!!

Also, I'm now having second thoughts about keeping mp sideswipe. Badcube's looks much more complimentary...

True but there's something about him that just doesn't look right to me. Maybe I should check out some reviews and see if I'm imagining it.

Figured it out. It's mostly the face with the weird slanted squinty eyes and the forearms with the big ol' doors hanging off (there's a reason the doors broke apart on the MP). Also a lot of him is just too straight and plain - compare his shoulders and shins to the MP figure in particular. It's too bad because I really like the way they did the chest. Also yech, that's definitely a badcube transformation! I wish Takara had bothered to do a proper + version with a new or at least revised mold instead of just a new paintjob.

I'm usually the first to complain about a transformation being overly complex... and yet, of all of my Transformers, I think I've transformed Steamroll and MP Sunstreaker the most. Both are just really fun Transformers. In my opinion, Steamroll straight up destroys MP-12... I freaking hate the MP-12 mold. Yet somehow I'm still stuck with the MP-12 KO that I bought when I was first getting into collecting Masterpiece Transformers.

Was the red alert good? It looked nice but it seemed a bit shaky.

His hideous harlequin face is the one thing that keeps my Takara Sunstreaker MISB and Badcube's version on the display shelf.

    Bah, it's only a deposit.

Yeah, his face is a little weird but nothing like Steamroll's.

Arguing that G1 Sunbow cartoon art is good or not is pointless. Art is open to interpretation. The Sunbow art is stylized designs based on the Transformer toys to make them look more heroic. And, in my opinion the art work is great. And, I’m not discussing animation errors and the like.

If the art work looked EXACTLY like the figures we were buying, we would have Go-Bots. Those stylized designs is part of the lure as to why the Transformers Toys were so successfull.

I’m more than happy to go FULL TOON!

    Sunbow cartoon art?

    This is bad comedy.

It was drawn by undernourished, overworked, mistreated, Korean slave children and it looks it.

Doesn't matter who drew it. Art is art.

If it's art. In this case, it seems questionable to refer to the poorly animated Sunbow cartoon as "art" in the sense the term is typically used (vs the technical definition of the term, which it falls under regardless of how crappy it is).

I believe the point he's making is that it's extremely inconsistent, and purely designed to be a commercial product that they would hardly identify as "art" back then, even though it technically is art.
Either way, it being art doesn't excuse the fact that the G1 cartoon is usually poorly drawn and riddled with errors. I love it, but it's a mess.

All art is art though. It doesn’t matter how effective it is at communicating it’s purpose or if you appreciate it. It still is art.

Again, that circularity only applies when using the technical definition of the term "art". Animation is a form of artwork, so technically speaking it is art by default. But is it "art" in the way that term is more commonly used to refer to artwork of a high caliber? That is where the disagreement lies between those two posters. Much like art itself, the matter is one of nuance rather than stoic literalism to dictionary definitions.

And it's worth mentioning, as I briefly touched on, that the intent of the product matters. I doubt most of the people behind the G1 cartoon looked at it as art (though a case could definitely be made for the voice actors, if nothing else).
