They're creating a ton of new characters period though, to suit specific roles in the story. Why wouldn't some be female?

 

The issue, to me, is they need to take existing characters and revamp them for the new continuity. Everytime I see a new character in a comic, I think it's just another character we'll probably never get a toy of...

 

No, we need G1 forever.

Of course we need new characters! Relying on 1980s nostalgia forever will very quickly lead to brand stagnation. And when the brand stagnates, fans will leave in droves and profit margins will plummet. Never forget, that's what Transformers is about. It's a toy commercial. It needs to keep people's interest.

This is a fair complaint. Though maybe by filling the origin story with OCs, they're hoping at least some of them will have the same staying power that Red Alert has had. Not all of them will be successful (Rubble's already bored me, for instance), but creating a new cast of characters isn't necessarily a negative.

And maybe IDW has plans for those established characters? And if they don't, maybe they're keeping it open so other creators can tell stories with those characters.

 

They're doing both. And also including all the toys that Habro is actually making.

It's a neat design (totally seeing the Mercy homage) but it doesn't feel like a Transformer to me. Maybe if she gets a toy...

 

THIS and THIS ! I actually like the design and all and am okay with new characters BUT she better be a character that doesnt fit any previous characters role. If a previous known fembot could have filled the role she should have been used first. I want to see the cartoon girls from g1 used. THen if they cant fit the role then use the Mistress of the Flames character from Combiner wars , or use Strong arm from RID. Use and flesh out the existing characters before making up a new character to fill a role a previous one could have filled.

Now with that said, it looks cool, IMVHO and I would not mind a toy of her and a repaint of Dezarus Wife to boot.

I like that she’s robot Mercy, and I’m usually bitching about designs straight up ripping from popular stuff, like the Covenant of Primus making Liege Maximo straight up Loki. I’d like to see it in action and off the concept art page.

 

Andrew Griffith you legend. Robot mercy and she’s beautiful with basic ice cream flavour paint scheme. Really hope we see what she turns into.

I see nothing to warrant the term "cesspool".

 

It's Termagax or however it's spelled, she's probably a martyr to be offed given she's the founder/leader of the Aescenticons. Can't use one of the Siege toyline's characters for someone who dies before the Great War even starts. (I'm so baffled by the choice of Brainstorm already.)

Ignoring the blatant Mercy ripoffness, which honestly there's worse things to rip off, she looks very... un-Transformer-like. She also feels at odds with the blockier, G1-ny characters of new IDW. She looks more at home in old IDW.

Which is funny, because most of the responses have been about the unoriginality of the design.

Also, have you ever considered that maybe- just maybe -the negative reaction to the new female characters are because they're generally poorly done? I love female characters, I've created and written female characters. Many of my favourite characters in and outside of TFs are girls. I've grown up in a household filled with women, the majority of my friends are women. Women are capital A-Okay with me.

But if there's one thing that bugs me it's female characters done poorly. Be it design or character, especially when it seems the only reason to include them is to simply be female, verses many male characters who are there for another "gimmick." In fact, nothing to me feels more disrespectful than creating a female character simply to tick a box, or to balance the gender scales, rather than make her worth a damn.

Not saying that applies here, but I'm not alone in this thinking. Not that TFW can't be a pool of various type, cess or otherwise, but upon examination you seem to be seeing a rampancy here that doesn't quite exist.

Criticism of a female character is not criticism of females.

 

I kinda hope it isn’t. But if she is I hope she’s cool.

Nah ,you can make new ones, it's just that they need to not be either extremely boring and / or a ripoff. Here's a neat idea, idw, try creating an actual character, and not just a set of quirks. Then decide on the appearance of the robot.

Some people take any dislike of a character to be about the character's superficial aspects, such as gender, rather than whatever you are actually complaining about. It’s easier to find a reason to dismiss others, instead of any sort of attempt to understand another person's point of view.
