I think the design choices on cybertron scene may have been Knights idea. As a way to commemorate where transformers came from. And all the fans that never quite got the movie they wanted.

Lots of detail where it's not needed. At least the various mechanical parts in the Bayformers served a purpose to the character's movement rather than just for complexity's sake - despite arguments.

Likely doesn't help that bugger all gets done with these parts moving on the bot modes (even with the characters on Earth) unlike a certain first film. [yes I'm quite bitter..]

 

What are you talking about? There were ton parts on Bayformers just for complexity's sake. Not all of them played a purpose.

Meawhile, look closely at the bots in TF1. Even when they're not moving, the small parts (for instance, look at OP at

) are moving - shifting - rotating - adjusting. I think the reason the absence of this (which sort of I understand, considering the time required for that and possibly budget) irks me so much is the fact that it made the characters look that much more alive to me, and also made them that more interesting to look at in motion.

Except there are still a bunch of parts on Prime that just sit there and play no purpose in either robot or alt mode. Yes, the lack of moving parts on Bee is for budget constraints, but I don't think affects the film in a meaningful. Having all those small parts are cool, though far from necessary. The facial expressions on these bots did a better job of making them feel alive. For example, we had Blitzwing's eyes grow larger when he knew he was toast or when Dropkick dropped his jaw when he found out Prime was coming to Earth. Facial expressions emphasize that they're alien robots with real emotions.

 

If you guys haven't noticed already, they don't utilize the movie Decepticon insignia in this film which is interesting.

I also threw their Cybertronian modes for completion sake.

The shot of shatter's battlemask you're talking about is present somewhere on the first page. There's not much of their flight modes in the film, but this the best I got in terms of getting a look at various angles.

I still think they shouldn't turn into cars on Cybertron.

 

At least not with regular wheels and tires and not sure if they have seats there but they shouldn't.

 

If you look at Bumblebee's Cybertronian carmode, you see he does not have doors or a cab, so there wouldn't be any seats as there are no room for them. So both the carmodes and jetmodes (Earth does not have tetrajets) on Cybertron is completely alien.

Vehicle modes are also good for faster transportation.  

 

This model did need to transform as well.
