That’s really not true. Colin does just fine for himself in ticket sales alone.

And what's the alternative? Taking all the unsold Delta Manuses (Manusi?) out into the Nevada desert and burying them in a secret landfill? If they have product left over it would be really dumb not to sell it.

I think you misunderstood me. I want them to sell them at the store. DC seemed to be arguing against it. I was saying other things to highlight aspects of different cons. I’m one of those crazy people who busts their hump trying to get everyone they know exclusives at a convention I attend and charge them retail. :D

I had a statement above that eventually I don't care. In fact it's great that for the next Con, I can just order from my sofa. My question is more theoretical i.e. what makes a con worth attending? And my argument is that having a true exclusive can increase the appeal.

The convention’s purpose is not the exclusive toys. The purpose is to see what the event itself has to offer. The value of the money spent for attendance should be found outside the dealer room. If you do not seek out that value, you cheated yourself. These geeks are me. They don’t play by conventional wisdom. They find ways to make this world their own. And I go to TFCons to burn a bowl with them. We own that hotel for 3 days.

The problem with that is that TFCon doesn’t have the exclusive. The individual retailer is just debuting it there. And there’s no advertisement of that fact before the con to act as a draw. Not months in advance and not with any kind of specificity, anyway.

Some do have smaller runs but I don’t think an exclusive toy is going to make or break them. The exclusives are there and people buy them and left over stock goes on sale on websites, or possibly get released in China. Keep in mind, many of these exclusives released, could easily be sold on the websites without being released at a con at all. The third party companies aren’t beholden to TFCon.

What makes a con is the atmosphere, the people, the guests, the potential of finding something awesome, experiencing something unique. Hell at NYCC some of my favorite events occur during the preshows before panels or events, the workers there really try to put on a major event and make everything fantastic. Shit, last October I even got to go on that stage at MSG which was awesome.

I like how the exclusives are shown last minute and are unexpected. It’s a great experience to have something brand new. We spend so much time dealing with preorders that take months and years to ship, It’s refreshing to see a new product and have it available the coming weekend.

Do you have the box? It says "TFCon Exclusive". Also cons have been doing "exclusives" for years. The difference being that in the past they were really exclusives which is why there was so much anger when MT only had 200 for G2 Jazz. It's true that they were then available after, but for much higher prices.

I think a lot of people can't objectively separate their desire for a figure from the business question I am raising. Is it great that convention exclusives are available for people who don't go to conventions? Absolutely. Last week was my first and last Con. The fact that they'll be available outside of conventions for a 5 dollar extra is incredible. I am simply saying the value of going to conventions has to be lower. Especially for those poor suckers paying 100 dollars to get first dibs (at what?). And trust me, there weren't a lot of group hugs either i.e. people going to conventions to meet other fans. Of course there's some of that, but I would say 20% maybe or less. Most people were already going with friends and family.

It sucks that you didn’t enjoy your experience, but that has nothing to do with the exclusives.

Indeed; Colin hasn't been involved in the exclusives for some time.

Right now all the TFcon exclusives are dealer exclusives rather than convention ones. So TFcon provides the venue and may promote exclusives but doesn't put up the investment - and it's not surprising they'd promote exclusives being sold by A3U and Chosen Prime, who are are after all major convention sponsors that put up part of the funding for guests.

Also, if you're going to TFcon to meet other fans, the easiest way to do that is to talk to people! In a hangout environment like a bar/the lobby there's usually people chilling out, and many are receptive to conversation. The whole group I hang with at the con and went to LA with is all people I met through the con itself. (And I say this as someone who is NOT super comfortable with icebreaker conversation initiation - at LA I felt super comfortable by virtue of how many people I knew there.)

Yeah but that's a very small number of people. Again, I would dare say that the majority of people go to socialize [in person] with people who share their fondness for whatever the convention is promoting. Plenty of conventions take place with no exclusives offered at all.

And, again, these exclusives were announced at the last minute. That's not at all a good way to lure in folks hoping to obtain such a thing.

If you do want the figure and it is exclusive to the show, in limited quantities and you are only just finding out a week before the show. And that's your only motivation? Goodness, you have to schedule vacation time at work or call in sick. Arrange for travel, find a hotel. Put kids/pets/other priorities on hold. Hope to get admission squared away. Then dig up the cash to cover the figure too. And, then, maaaaybe get the figure if you're not guy 501. Or...

Yeah, there are those people who think their collection is only great because they own something you don't and you'll never have. Those people are jerks.

Can't wait to get this and put him inside of Buster Skywing when he comes out. I think the white will really make the combo of those two pop.

That depends. I will admit for TFCON I went for the ability to purchase the exclusives, to meet @er4smiths and to sit on the 3rd party panel, and that's it. But I enjoyed talking to the fellow fans, Alex Milne, and attending the TF Movie panel.

Now for other conventions I go for the panels, artist alley, hope to find deals, and to get free autographs from people like Jim Lee, Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Donny Cates, and etc.
I will say that TFCON had a far more welcoming, friendly, and inclusive fanbase, but that's the only pro.
The negative is that the actual TFCON staff or volunteers there were clueless and a bit of asshats, but that can be subjective.
The price is also way too high for such a small convention, but I can understand why is costs more because they do not have corporate sponsors. The one day pass for TFCON costs the same for a one day pass as Wondercon which provides so much more value, and of course it doesn't compare to SDCC.
This was my first and probably my last TFCON at that, as I can't see anymore must have exclusives for me. Jazz and Starscream were the only G2 decos I really wanted, the rest of the G2 decos just aren't that great or I find them ugly.

All I can recommend is to be happy with the experience, and for the other fans that were given the opportunity to purchase the exclusives that were unable to attend the CON. Also sometimes just getting away from these boards helps put things into perspective.
