IMO given that in most Transformers fiction all/most Combiners form a new personallity formed from ALL it's components it is not accurate to say a Combiner is decided purely by it's core not. The limbs aren't just extensions of the core bot.

As such when you replace components it can be argued the whole is different. For example in IDW when Prowl was part of Devastator hiss presence was (mostly) able to make Devastator a bit less wreckless and more goal orientated but when his aims were in conflict with the rest he had trouble exerting control.

And that's just with one different part of the combiner. Orthia has two different minds in the mix compared to Elita Infinite, making her for one an entirely female combiner but also two fifths of her personality are entirely different
TL:D R I don't think different names for different combinations are stupid. But that's just my opinion.

I agree totally and I think it’s a genius idea. Even if I don’t never use that in stories. I still totally respect it.

Lol I have actually. But I was joking before. Cause I said “back in my day” even though I never grew up with G1.

The name Betatron only came about because they originally didn’t know if they were going to be able to release Computron. Computron got released, and Betatron is null and void as far as I’m concerned. Elita Infinite was never an official name on any marketing material. Orthia is and has dedicated limbs. I don’t do the whole different limbs equal different combiner name. Sure, the personality mix is different and can affect the whole, but you still have the same basic guy. Or girl.

the thing is though, elita infinite was as official as you can get without being on marketing material (originating with an actual hasbro employee at a convention or something like that), and betatron was an actual thing in instructions and stuff like that. personal preferences aside both the characters of scattershot and elita 1 have multiple combiner names based on the limbs that are attached

How many parts of your personality can you replace until you stop being the same person?

I believe the name Elita Infinite is also used in the combiner instructions for Elita and/or Moonracer. I'll check when I get the chance. So yeah it's in official material.

And it makes perfect sense given what we learned about combiners during the CW arc in IDW. Not all combiners are created equal.

Scattershot with any four limbs is Betatron. Elita with any four limbs is Infinite. But both of them also have a team of fellow components who, when combined, fuse into a more unified personality. These are Computron and Orthia.

Optimus is the same way. Put him with four limbs and you have Ultra Prime. But if he combines with the "Sentinels" (as the TCG calls them) he forms Optimus Maximus.

This is even built into CW Cyclonus' lore. His torso mode has mind control abilities that can force other limbs to join with him. And he uses this to form Galvatronus. However you can also look to UW and say that with the right four limbs he becomes Grand Galvatron.

I know, I was allowing for those when I said most worked how I described rather than all, but thanks for adding the extra info for the benefit of those who don't trawl the wiki like I have been these past few months :)

With the age range in this fandom and how old us G1 fans are "back in my day" could mean Armada.

Hell, the Studio Series line is predicated on the idea there's a market for nostalgia of the early Bayverse films. Look at Barricade of all things.

How about G2 Devastator? That's the one I really thought might happen as a convention exclusive.

Inferno, Ratchet, and Wreck-Gar are the first three parts of G2 Devy. Would *not* be shocked if at some point the decision was made to break up the boxed set and put new heads on the guys to sell other ways.
