If I want to kill a rainy afternoon, I'll pop in the 86 movie.

If I want a film to sit down and watch in the evening with some friends/family, I'll pick 07.

Today I watched both movies back to back for the first time. The similarities are uncanny.

-Both have excellent music for their times. I love Vince and Stan, and their music was perfect for a movie from 1986. But Jablonsky's score exceeds any expectations I had for the music for TF 07. Both kick ass soundtracks.

-Both seem to be the start of something really big, complete with groundbreaking special effects and movie-making for their time (NO ONE died in a kids' movie before TFTM). Granted, in hindsight the old movie did kill the franchise (slowly) thanks to the deaths of Prime and Megatron and a lack of growth on the part of Rodimus' character. And here we are in 07 seeing TF 07 as a rebirth of the franchise and the start of something really big. Time will tell what road the new movie takes the franchise down. Will it be run into the ground ala Batman or (IMO) X-Men? Or will it stand tall as a classic film saga ala (the original) Star Wars?

-Boring moments. From the point where Prime picks up the glasses to when he and the Autobots are at the observatory, NOTHING HAPPENS!! Same for all the scenes with Maggie and Glen. Not to mention the span of time between seeing Blackout at the start of the film to when BB "stands up." There were just so many dull, unnecessary parts. But the old movie is the same. After Starscream's death, nothing happens until Unicron transforms. I find myself falling asleep most of the time when I watch it.

-THE MOMENT. Ever since I saw the first film I define this as the "Arise, Rodimus Prime Moment." It's basically one shot, and you just find yourself going, "oh hell yeah!" That moment in the old movie was always my favorite, especially hearing Prime's voice. The new movie had that moment for me too, when Prime rolls into Mission City and transforms. The camera pan up his body and the music swelling, topped off with him locking in the faceplate and saying, "Megatron!" is a classic, kick ass moment.

For nostalgia purposes, I choose the first film, based mainly on the fact that there just isn't enough screentime for the Transformers. Yet, if I want to kick back for a long time and get uber-excited, as I did when I saw TFTM when I was 5, I will pop in the new movie.

    It's a tie, basically.

In the animated, I couldn't stand how almost the entire movie had some sort of music/song playing throughout...that's just me..

Its the original no question, while it wasn't perfect its still pretty good and stands the test of time. Maybe not the most original plot but still very enjoyable. The new one, wow where do I begin, lack of characterization, cheesy dialogue, lack of Transformers, the movie designs I still find so unappealing. Look nothing wrong with those who like that kind of stuff but I need something a bit more than big special FX to keep me entertained. I love how so many members here need to make anything G1 sound like its the worst thing that ever came along so long as it fits with there opinion, good stuff.

    The 2007 movie.

The 1986 movie's plot is an absolute trainwreck.

The 2007 movie was something I was waiting for, for a long time. But the 86 movie was THE thing that got me into Transformers in the first place. Though the plot was, as said by Da_Razorsaw, an absolute trainwreck but it still had it's epic moments.

Both had their pros and cons. I have to say that one ranks just as high as the other in my opinion.

2007 movie hands down!! I was absolutely PISSED that they killed off Optimus and made that Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime, whatever his name was leader of the Autobots in the 86 movie. I pretty much got away from Transformers after that.

2007 movie got me back into Transformers, not only that I went to see the movie with my wife and father in law. My father in law woulnd't know a Transformer from a GI Joe and my wife could absolutely care less. BOTH of them liked the movie!!!

There might be some debate on whether they are officially for kids or not, but there's a mess of Disney animated films that would like to contest that statement. :)

Roger Ebert is the Everyman's Critic. He's knows when His opinions matter and when they don't. He also knows when a movie is you know FUN.

They both have things I greatly dislike, and things I greatly love, but the original, obviously, is ultimately a little more true to the property in my eyes, and that's not just nostalgia talking at all

Yeah, there's somebody dead or dying in every animated movie Disney ever made.

Brodimus, your statement is so incredibly false it boggles the mind.

I have to say I probably won't be watching the 07 movie much, because no matter how great the effects maybe be the story and writing are absolutely horrible.

At least, the 86 movie had a story that is somewhat interesting while making alittle sense.
