Hasbro uses matt finish on the monsterbot’s head, while TakaraTomy uses a gloss finish.

Hasbro has a gloss finish on Grotusque while Takara has a matte finish. I listed the differences

Yes, I'm aware of that. It's why I preferred the Takara Doublecross rather than the Hasbro one as he has a different weapon rather than reusing Grotusque's, and it being a targetmaster gives a bit more play value.

As usual the Takara figures and sets are more value for your buck. I got the Takara Sharkticon, Takara Legends bumblebee with Spike. And also the Takara t30 Jetfire. And non of them I ever regretted even though the cost more. Those finishing touches and the eye for detail on Japanese releases are just better. Also since the Grotesque by Hasbro is an exclusive, you are just better off buying this set, most online retailers will have it for a reasonable price. While Grotesque is way overpriced on the aftermarket, and what do you get but that beat up black box and an additional diecast head.

I agree. If you compare the combined aftermarket prices for the Hasbro Repgunus and Grotusque verses their Takara releases, on the balance Takara is the better deal, in my opinion. Yes, you are missing out on a translucent Solus Prime and a diecast Scorponok head, but those things didn't interest me to begin with.

Having all of the Takara Monsterbots in hand, I have to say they are a blast to fiddle around with. Just trying to get the Titans Return Repugnus Titan Master to complete the set and give Repugnus another head option and weapon/drone minion (the Repug armor). I did temporarily give Doublecross Grotusque's guns to get a feel for how fiddling with the Hasbro Twinferno would've felt like. Got to say that going Takara on Doublecross was the right call for me, as Doublecross can't really hold conventional weapons like Grotusque's guns in a way that looks natural anyway, plus as mentioned, I didn't like Hasbro reusing weapons between the two Monsterbots. Having the cartoon accurate decor and the Headmaster be fully painted was also a plus as well. It's a bit of a pity that Repugnus and Grotusque are the same between Hasbro and Takara, but they were already receiving the "premium treatment" from Hasbro anyway.

Think it is safe to say that if you really want Grotesque go Takara, if not then if you just want a Repugnus you can go Hasbro. Just that if you are looking to complete, Takara is the better choice.

I'm not sure comparing the after-market price of one to the retail release of the other is a way to make an honest comparison. It seems like it's just looking for an excuse to ignore the fact that you got more for less money from Hasbro for figures that are virtually identical.
Of course, if you're not in the U.S. your mileage may vary, and/or if you missed the boat on the Hasbro release, that would be an entirely different conversation.

Well, I didn't get the Hasbro Grotusque, due to the scarcity of the figure and the aftermarket prices on him. I also was on the fence on the Hasbro Repugnus so I was still mulling on whether to get him or not. Then Takara announced they were releasing both figures in one set, and well, let's just say that situation worked out perfectly for me. I got the Takara Grotusque and Repugnus set and also the Takara Doublecross to complete the group.

Well, I can't say I completely agree here, since Grotusque was a limited run figure and not something you can easily expect to get your hands on. Using an aftermarket price for Grotusque doesn't seem like an unfair comparison since that is exactly what most people who might have wanted the figure would pay. The only real option to get the figure relatively easily at a reasonable price was to go Takara. I don't reside in the US, so that also would have affected my ability to get that figure. I also skipped on the Hasbro Grotusque as because while I wanted the figure, I could live without it, as I wasn't going to pay aftermarket prices for him. Takara releasing Grotusque and Repugnus in a set changed my mind and I got that set instead (and the Takara Doublecross as well to boot). I don't know about "virtually identical", since the Takara Repugnus did use glossy paint on the bug head which I thought was a nice effect.

The other notion is that, if you want Grotusque and Repugnus now, TT is a better deal. I did get one each of the Hasbro releases to go with my Hasbro Doublecross. I later got the TT Doublecross, liking the extra 'toon details, so now in need of another Grotusque and Repugnus after both long releawed, the TT release is the cheaper alternative.

I know there's been a plethora of news with new toy releases and such, but this is just a quick shout out to anyone who has this set, if they happened to have scanned the manga?

Not residing in the U.S. would give you another set of circumstances, yes.
As far as in the U.S., "most people" and "not something you can easily expect to get your hands on" wasn't really true. After disappearing from HTS, it was available at TRU.com for several months.

    My beautiful blue-eyed bad boys...

I always thought it was silly to give Doublecross a gun since his hands are fire-breathing dragon heads/ flamethrowers so Haywire (the Targetmaster that came with him) is now with TR Blurr. I also don’t like the ugly “swords” that came with Repugnus so I gave him Targetmaster Waspinator instead. I think the design and colors work well since they are both insects. Now Repugnus has a blaster and a pet!

I just got my Takara versions over the weekend. They look so good!

    Minor complaints:
They are packaged in alt mode. When transforming to bot mode, the hip joints were stuck and really difficult to separate from the waist.

For Grotusque, the ankle swivels actually separated from the feet during transformation and i had to tab them back in after prying the hip armor off the waist. Subsequent transformations feel easier though. During this process, i'm not sure if i damaged the toy, but the tab in the ankle swivel which is meant to tab into hole in front of the feet in bot mode looks very shallow, so it doesn't quite tab in in bot mode. I double checked on my old hasbro Twinferno and those tabs are long and tab in very snugly. Just wondering if its just my copy or its the same across the board. Repugnus doesn't have this issue as it has 2 additional tabs at the bottom of the feet.

Hilariously, that's what the Repug Armor in the Legends comic served as, a handheld blaster for Repugnus and an attack drone that he could command. Later, Repugnus wound up mass-producing the darn things to make an army.

It seems that Grotusque's headmaster has a painted robot mode head, so it looks like paint chipping or scraping could be a concern when inserting the head into Grostusque's neck socket. Are there ways to help avoid this?
