Because it's the only series that counts, obviously.

Now that's what I'm talking about. I second that.

While there were definitely a lot of Autobots that I loved, I'd still have to say that the Decepticons always outnumbered them with characters that really stood out either in terms of personality, design & function.

Soundwave, Shockwave, Reflector, the Constructicons, the Triple Changers, the Seekers, the Insecticons & the Predacons always ranked as some of my all time favorite characters & teams. Design & color wise, I always they thought they stood out a lot more as well. The only Autobots that grabbed my attention the same way - in terms of initial wow factor - were the Dinobots, Omega Supreme, cartoon version of Skyfire (not Jetfire) and the Aerialbots (simply due to being a kid who was also into jets).

Overall I thought the Autobots (usually) had better personalities, but the Cons had the cooler looks & concepts.

I'd say it's an even mix between the two, as long as all forms of G1 are being considered.

Besides, being a badass does not necessarily mean that you have a good character. But it doesn't hurt, either.

For example, I was loved the irony of Silverbolt, a plane that was afraid of heights. To me the quirks are what set them apart and made them "good" for me.

Most of your list I would tend to agree with, except for these two. Grimlock was only a moron in the cartoon. In the comics, he's very intelligent but has a speech impediment. So if we take into account, Grimlock becomes a much more intriguing character.

I would call Soundwave a blackmailer before Swindle. To me, the Combaticon will always be a black market dealer and a con man. I mean, he sold the parts of his fellow combaticons on the black market.

Hmm... this is against what I stand for, but.... I have to agree. The Decepticons choose some really badass alt modes. Not just in G1, but I also liked their designs in the live-action movie (especially Barricade).

And Comic Grimlock's history is a bit more complex making him all the more intriguing. Comic Grimlock is waaaaaaaaaay cooler than cartoon Grimlock. Hell, comic everyone is way cooler than cartoon everyone.

I'm biased as I've been a Decepticon fan since I was 9. :D  22 years later, I'm still true to my roots.

    1.) Megs- the ultimate badboy
2.) Screamer- close second. The coniving pain in the aft is my all time favorite
3.) Soundwave- trebleshot is right, he's the blackmailer
4.) Astrotrain- he has an attitude. I love it.
5.) Same goes for Mr. Crankypants Thundercracker

    Autobots:

1.) Optimus- regardless of what faction their with, everyone respects him. He's a great leader.
2.) Jazz- I love his outlook on everything
3.) Ironhide- my "bad" side loves his outlook on everything. "Ah, that's nothing some guns can't take care of."
4.) Prowl- the easiest Autobot to hate. God that guy is a ****
5.) Grimlock- always saving someone's hide

well, I love them both now. When I was younger, I was an Autobot fan - now the Decepticons have grown on me. Yeah, Ironhide is still the trigger-happy bot we know LOL. Megs in the movie is more ruthless.

Somehow, I really pity Starscream, he always get slapped in the face from Megs or being abused.

why not? there's no request from the mods to balance out what people talk about.

    Very valid point.

    I completely agree.

Also as much as I thought Prime was an icon, I think that Megs just had this look that just made him seem sinister and evil.

Yeah, why don't you use comma's or periods?

    Roffels. I kid, I kid.

Still, some variety would be nice, and I could do without the whole "everything but G1, sucks" thing for a change.

When I think of G1 Icons I think of:

    Autobots:
    Prime (of course)
    Ironhide
    Jazz
    Bumblebee

    Decepticons:
    Megatron
    Starscream
    Soundwave
    Rumble
    Lazerbeak

Even though I don't want to admit it because I'm a diehard Autobot fan I'd have to say the Decepticons had the most memorable characters.

Decepticons take it for me. I've always liked them more even as a kid. Of course, I've always leaned towards the villains in fiction anyway and it holds true for most TF spin-offs. I think Beast Wars is the only show where I really like most of the heroes as much as the villains.

    Someone quoted me! YAY!

Anyways, I'm only familiar with the cartoon depiction of Grimlock. I actually have yet to read ANY TF comic at ALL. Really.

As for Swindle, I made a mistake. I meant 'con man' but I picked the wrong synonym. Either way, he does KINDA try to blackmail Galvatron into paying him for Metroplex's TF cog...then Galvs blows him up :D

I'm an Autobot at heart, but hey, I've got a soft spot for the Decepticons too.

    Autobots

Optimus Prime - Peter Cullen and That Voice. THE Uber-leader; once & future King; noble & heroic and all that lot - who doesn't love the Big Red n' Blue Truck?
Jazz - Coolest cat on the block
    Bumblebee - Adorable baby brother.
Ratchet - Wrench throwin' party ambulance.... TF's own Bones McCoy
Ironhide (Ahhhhrnhaaayde) - The Grizzled Trustworthy Sarge
Grimlock - The T-Rex is King!
    Tracks - The Metrosexual
Sunstreaker - Mr. Vain (Side note: I read somewhere that the Dreamwave comics guys said that HE's the real gay Autobot and Tracks is just metrosexual - that kinda throws the wrench into the whole "Is Tracks gay?" debate)
Sideswipe - Practical Joker, cocky guy
Prowl - The Autobots' own Detective Horatio Caine. (snerk) I'm STILL trying to figure out the whole Prowl vs. Jazz AND Prowl SLASH Jazz thing. WTF, peeps?!!

    Decepticons

Megatron - Frank Welker and That Voice. I actually thought Megs was more bad-@$$ as a gun (despite the CRAZY mass shifting deal) than a tank. Plus, it's so much fun watching him getting frustrated w/ the Evil Plans every week.
Starscream - Meredith Brooks' "B-tch" is his Theme Song. And he's also Cobra Commander. What is not to love?
Soundwave - Made me grit my teeth. GAH.
Frenzy & Rumble - I know it's verboten but....I can't resist. FIRRIB!!!!! (runs liek whoa)
Thundercracker - I always knew he was on the fence, pity that they never really got to explore the idea of him defecting to the Autobot side.

That's not blackmail, that's con artistry.

And as the spooky voice said in Altered Beast... "Riiiise from your grave."
