So considering the new versions of prime and the hyper toon looking Chibi bumblebee I’m interested to know what other collectors prefer.

I’m not really sure where the toon look began and the old look changed but I really noticed the look myself after MP30 with inferno and grapple taking somewhat of a departure from the style that had come before.

Your mileage may vary as to where you feel the change began but I’m just using those numbers as an example.

So which one is for you, are you happy with the direction the line is going in or would you prefer if they had stuck to the older look?

I can go either way, I do like the toon look so long as the car looks right, Sunstreaker is a good example. Chibi Bee, not so sure as it takes it out of the realm of realism.

Beast Wars on the other hand, show accurate all the way down to the texturing

I personally dislike the aesthetic of the new toon accurate toys, but love the complex transformations. That being said, I don't plan on collecting any Takara MPs anymore aside from maybe Beast Wars and Movie MPs (Ironhide has me thinking twice). Thankfully, third party is honestly at a point where anybody who wants to could complete a G1 cast in that toy/toon/real-world blend that made me fall in love with the line in the first place.

Honestly, as long as the figure is fun and represents the character well, either way is fine. Sure I only own mp 19 but if they were to do a 19+, id buy it. I don't see many other characters getting the double release treatment outside of prime, megs, bee, and screamer. Those 4 are somewhat the "popular favorites" which is most likely why they get different figures.

I think I would have bought my first mp if they hadn't gone super toon on Sunstreaker's head. Less of flash gordon pointy head swimming hats 278633a0a6b51426193d6ba26bf671fb--flash-gordon-si-fi.jpg

And more like the pharaoh sun god head f9ad6437e1f78a90310bfbcdb3f3941b.jpg

I prefer the old look, though I think a blend of the two styles would be ideal. There are some things about the cartoon I'd like to see replicated in the older MPs that wasn't happening (for instance, MP Starscream barely resembles the animation model, despite being cool) but I dislike the proportions of a lot of the cartoon accurate figures (like Megatron) and would prefer them to have more detailed face sculpts (I want Cordon's head on Sunstreaker, for instance). I only have a handful of MPs (the seekers, Soundwave, and MP-01), but the ones I'm most drawn to are the older MP cars. In fact, MP cars and Wreckers are next on my list to pick up...I'd love to grab Sunstreaker, but the head and the price are deal breakers.

As much as I like the cartoony look, I also liked the more realistic look the old ones had.

Changing mid-stream is the real issue. Now we have 50/50 collections and are forced to re-buy figures if we want a cohesive collection.

That being said, I prefer the original, more detailed aesthetic.

I'm the boat of i like both styles since both appeal very well to me but cost is a factor. When i can buy a Masterpiece i look at cost first. Then it's a what i can afford more so over the look of cartoon and orginal style.

Toon style was done because they've run out of ideas for better masterpieces and try to milk it for what it's worth. I really dislike toon-style because it represents poor artwork/style because artists/animator were limited in resources and they weren't very good. The nostalgia does not excuse poorly drawn/designed graphics/animation. This is why the detailed/original/old/toy style is much better, and the animators/artists would've chosen those instead if they weren't limited in time and resources.

I’m 75% toy / 25% toon in my collection as long as they blend together. Love my Megs, Streaker and Ironhide, but only bought a KO Grapple to experience that mold and have to say it’ll be the first to go if I ever need shelf space. The 3rd parties have found the proper balance for me with Phoenix, Downbeat, Quakeblast and then the toon colors of Sphinx and Gundog to really tie the old with the new. Takara has lost me with Prime 3.0 and now Bee 2 by making the vehicles 100% toon and then charging absolutely insane prices for what you are getting. I really wish they had held the line at Streaker and Megs, but that step over the line to full blown toon has left me wanting nothing new.

I prefer the old style. For me MP Prowl is the bench mark. He looks and feels like the G1 toy but moves the way I always wished G1 toys could. I see the simplistic animation colors as the limitation of a cartoon color palette. Megatron isn't really grey he's metal, but you can't do metal in a cartoon.

I like both for equal reason. As many have said it sucks that they have changed/revamped mid stream.
I’m probably not going to buy Prime V.3 unless a cheaper trailerless version becomes available.
I was exited for Bee V.2 as I’m happier with my Toyworld Bii then MP Bee V.1 BUT as seeing the new pictures I’m pretty sure it’s a pass from me.
I was one of the few that wasn’t thrilled with pictures of Version 1 AND in hand it didn’t win me over either. Don’t get me wrong I don’t hate it , it’s just not the definitive version that I have in my head.
To get to my point is I’m not thrilled with the new “direction” enough to spend THAT much on another version of another non definitive version . BUT I’m happy for those that are happy with the line change and can afford it as well.
I’d like to add that I bought Megatron and Sunstreaker and don’t regret it . I’ll most likely be buying Hound whenever they finally release him.....and Cliffjumper shortly after... ; )

Super articulated toonsentric FTW. Useless accessories an all. Old style was nice all , but reminded me of Binaltech in that the cars NEEDED to be real .

Old look for sure. I'm not the biggest fan of G1 but I definetly prefer the updated look that old Generations, MP, and now Siege have. The cartoon designs just don't work in physical form, they're too lumpy and odd looking. The fact a Masterpiece has to cheat just so it can look like an outdated cartoon design from 40 years ago is not my cup of tea.

Oh and another reason cartoon doesn't work, Bumblebee looks like Quagmire

I think many of the newer molds look overly smooth. There are some where the uber Cartoon accurate version works well like Megatron, but for many it seems like a step down in looks (I think it's most notable with Optimus).
