Early Galvatron under Furman's pen was damn interesting.

Getaway had a lot of potential early on as well. A lot of the buildup was squandered, though. Which isn't surprising considering who wrote him.

The guy who ghostwrote under James Roberts' name after MTMTE issue 40, obviously.

I’m surprised at the shockwave love honestly. I feel like he was great through dark cybertron. Then the whole onyx reveal was cool, however I think he fell flat pretty hard after that.

I'm going for Shockwave too. Besides what everyone else said, he also believed strongly he was doing things for the greater good.

Tarn. He's like this pure, unambiguous distillation of Megatron's worst ideals, going all the way back to the G1 cartoon. I love a villain with purpose. Shockwave is one maguffin after another. When he was revealed as Onyx Prime, I almost dislodged my eyes from rolling them. Mind you, I've come to realize over the last year that I'm not a fan of Barber, at all. Trying to get through Optimus Prime and Unicron has been a slog.

That last Optimus Prime arc was brutal. I finished just to say I did. So disappointing, I really liked that series and TAAO.

How about Primus? If you create a whole species of living creatures and then they go on to fight countless civil wars and massacre half of the galaxy surely you didn’t take very good care of your creations and are responsible for their failings.

As for favourite Overlord is probably the most interesting as his intellect was nearly as scary as his brawn. Sadly he was rubbish in his final story being reduced to Tarantulas’s brute underling who went out like a wimp.

Just noticed that Unicron wasn’t even an option Ha. If it wasn’t for the brilliant art he was nearly as rubbish as D-void. Damn you Barber.

I've been reading back through a bit of IDW, and I think Turmoil, while not a major villain, had a lot of potential to be something great. It's a shame he was killed the way he was.

I kinda liked how Starscream smoked him. It was a rare badass cut throat Starscream moment I wish we saw more of.

I liked Tarn quite a bit. On the reread he seems like the most fleshed out and believable of the villains (lame bureaucracy jokes aside), and with his massively toxic insecurities dictating a lot of his quirks he almost comes off as a deconstruction of the cartoony zealot. And he's the facilitator of some of my favorite Megatron writing.

Not a big fan of the Mutineers trilogy or how he tied into the finale, but I actually really enjoyed the banality of Getaway. People used to talk about MTMTE being a whole different book on the second go, but I feel as though Getaway was one of the few characters who I was consistently reevaluating as I read. I feel like the way he unfolded to the audience is actually one of the truest depictions of everyday evil I've read: A) Decently charming individual we sort of take for granted suddenly comes off as B) massively sinister and inscrutable, before C) being outed merely as a vapid, poisonous fuckup who's managed not to register as a threat until now simply because they've never had a reason to show their true colors.

    With you on Shockwave, though.

I don't know if I'd technically classify him as "villain" so much as as a plot device, but I absolutely loved IDW's take on Unicron. Not only is it a really adroit reinvention of his original backstory, but he ends up as the ultimate "your sins have found you out" moment for the Cybertronian race and ties all the themes of Barber's story back together at the end. And, I think, the first time his defeat has come about by understanding and defusing the motivation behind him, rather than shooting him with a MacGuffin. Really good stuff.

Honestly, per the amount of fan ire generated, the only idw “villain” worth mentioning is roberts himself.

Shockwave, Getaway, Tarn and Tyrest all started as great villains and went downhill at the end.

Shockwave's plan didn't make sense, Getaway went from a morally grey antagonist to a cartoon villain, the backstory of Tarn and why he was that way wasn't explained at all, and Tyrest being Solomus felt that his villany didn't make much sense.

So... I guess I'm still with Getaway.

Honestly, i didn't think Tarn really needed explaining. I imagine that story isn't too different from that Shockwave issue explaining how he joined the cons

    Oh man, Tyrest!

I really like him as a villain, but then as Simon Is totally fell flat for me. After the season 1 finally I felt he was done, i can't understand why he needed to come back.

Getaway I want to defend how it eventually went down, but I don't feel it was the same character that was introduced.

Perhaps I should reread the whole series. Again.

I meant Solomus, not Simon is.
Unless Robert did mean for that auto correct

The problem is the way he was built up. We were lead to believe that he would be SOMEBODY. And when he ended up being a nobody, people were rightfully upset. I don't know. I think that speaks to Roberts' overall style. Lot's of interesting buildup with no real resolutions or anything of true substance.

Well, in-universe he was in a way. He was part of Orion Pax's initial Autobot crew.

Wasn't the fact he was a comparative nobody by the end the whole point of Megatron's "This is where you die" speech?

I guess it'd be Overlord, except they kept bringing him back. One return was enough; I think he was diminished with each subsequent return.
