I think you understood it fine. I thought you made a solid point. It is a lot like the Letter Column. Just...wild, uncontrollable, and with more cussing.

At issue 22#, I'm loving the series so far, yet I don't think I can read it with artwork like this:

Never saw them being too human, but the romance should be turn down. I wish Tailgate and Cyclonus relationship were kept as a parent/child one. Some Transformers do have parents/children and start out as one, but the IDW is not one of them. Cyclonus and Tailgate were the closest to what we got.

That's the only issue that James Raiz drew, isn't it? He's got plenty more Alex Milne to look forward too.

    Yes.
I honestly would love LL a lot more if it was a story involving humans, not TF. Sure, Transformers can have emotions, but this is a little too extreme.

Raiz drew a good chunk of Dark Cybertron. I rather liked the feel of his breakdowns. Seemed like a terrible inker for himself, though. Should've just put Josh on inks or something.

Not specifically Lost Light but still very related, but that moment where Arcee randomly makes out with that OC I don't remember the name of was pretty hilarious for a few reasons:

    1. It's two giant alien robots french kissing like humans, I'd expect to see this kind of thing in fan-art, not in comics that are meant to be canon.
    2. It's not sweet or cute because the two barely knew each-other before Arcee just thrust herself on this rando. Keep it in your pants dude. You didn't even ask if she was cool with it first. This is mainly semantics because regardless if it was an actually well-developed relationship between two solid characters, it would still be weird given the context.
    3. Them 'learning it from us' doesn't make the scene any less weird and cringe.

Like any good joke, I didn't see it coming.  Imagine if out of nowhere we got a scene of like, Grimlock sitting on a toilet or urinating against a wall, should Cybertronians relieve themselves like we do as well? Where's the limit? Does anyone else wanna know what Cybertronian waste looks like? I sure do.

I agree with the OP and see where he’s coming from. Do I still love the characters? Absolutely. I think I’d prefer my Transformers with a lot of character or quirks than little to none (looking at you Bay and Prime writers), though, but there’s always a limit.

Personally, I don't hate the kissing. I understand the writers are just trying to convey that these characters are in love or whatever but I wish for once they'd come up with robot alien forms of intimacy. Like, maybe exchanging data with your buddy over wifi via a shared cloud, dropbox situation is the equivalent of a hug? But then you could have something even more intimate like plugging a cable into your S/O's head or somewhere along their body, connecting them to yourself, and allowing for an exchange of experiences and thoughts directly.
At the very least James gave us the energon exchanges. That was alien enough.

When I originally read MTMTE/LL I enjoyed it as a sort of light-hearted Transformers spoof. It worked very well for me because I was starting to find Transformers comics a bit too simplistic and therefore dull. I certainly didn’t follow the story or take it remotely seriously. I just knew that for 15 minutes a month it amused me in a way that seemed pretty fresh for a Transformers property.

It was only in the confusion of its ending that I found the desire to go back and read it again as a coherent story, and was astonished to find that there actually was a really compelling story running through much of it.

I can’t criticise anyone who didn’t get it, humour is very subjective. But it seems to me that some people just took it a bit too seriously.

Of course, the joke is now on me as my wallet gets drained by the 3P figures...

P.S. I suspect btw that the idea of taking the piss out of a thing you really love, to show your appreciation, works better if you’re British.

I think most of us recognised its frivolity, that was one of the more refreshing aspects at the start, but it also seemed relatively balanced with sophistication in the beginning. Swirly thing alerts and Wibbly wobbly timey-wimey space stuff are great when contrasted with harder edge concepts, but many of the juvenile elements got a bit overwhelming for me by the end. It became all sugar and fat, with no protein as far as I was concerned.

There's nothing wrong with taking the piss, as long as the characters and story can be regularly grounded. Rodimus started to irritate me by LL as even the mutiny couldn't prompt any real reflection from him. To be honest, it seemed too American for me, in that the protagonists were rarely brought down to earth. Sure Magnus and then Megatron made a few cynical remarks, but Team Rodimus mostly stood around in admiration, indulging his whims.

Also, plenty of us do follow the story, that's what we're here for. Taking the piss out of the readers for wanting that isn't advisable for an author.

The extent to which is needs to be ‘grounded’ really depends on whether it’s taken as primarily comedy or primarily drama. I took it as basically being comedic and was surprised to find the storyline held up at all on re-reading. You clearly took it the other way, drama with elements of comedy. As a result, you applied a different set of (rather tougher) criteria in judging it. That’s all fair enough, but I’m surprised to hear you felt it was the readers (as opposed to the characters and the property) who were having the piss taken out of them. It never seemed like that to me.

Subjective assessment was evident the moment you mentioned your lack of care to follow the story. While you are correct, the extent of 'grounding' required does differ between comedy and drama, my point was that it didn't appear sufficient for either. If the book was intended to be a comedy rather than an adventure romp, I'd suggest it wasn't as successful in its approach as you may consider it.

The last comment wasn't intended as an accusation, more of an implication that story shouldn't be trifled with haphazardly, regardless of genre or the element of silliness. This was indirectly saying that just because you don't care for it, doesn't mean Roberts should ignore it. Because, as you have alluded, individuals have different criteria and appreciations for things.

The only times a Transformers story can be too humanised is when they refer to each other as being dead meat.
