This feels like the backstory told in Transformers Cyberverse, but with Transformers Siege designs.

Even farther back. But does share some similarities. Though has some differences too. Roster lineup is similar, but different in other ways too. Cyberverse is more reader's digested and streamlined, and was written before this, so that's not surprising, including how this would use material that wasn't ready by the time Cyberverse was put together. This one ditches more elements of aligned though, while aligned was still heavily drawn on for Cyberverse initially when aligned was still in revision stages for future media. One of the other reasons why this is set so much further back as it'll likely have the heavy revisions done to aligned since Cyberverse was initially put together.

Cyberverse is still loosely tied to the caste system and the aligned Novel in how autobots and decepticons came into existence faction name-wise as we see in the Macadams episode. This isn't.

Think of this as the Aligned 2.0 version whereas cyberverse is more the Aligned 1.5 version and a beta test.

Depends on how much it takes off, and how long the run goes and how much it ends up impacting material later in the cycles.

Physical comics and their value is a fluctuating thing. Sometimes they boom, sometimes they don't. Even older comics really only gain value when their content or characters get general audience prolific by media usage. Like how Deadpool prices surged during his movies. Same to Venom and his. Or various other comic based movies and their original comics or comics their movie stories were based on.

Time traveling Galvatron? And he assassinates Starscream to avoid an issue later that gets him created? Forcing himself to be erased from existence, and with him so goes any evidence of him being the killer.
That'd certainly be a new original twist on the lore to kick off the series.

The only problem I had with that is the Cons looked more like the good guys and the Bots more like the bad guys, and the war went nowhere until D-Void basically handed the victory to OP.

I'm just saying some characters can be complicated, like Megatron and maybe Starscream, but Soundwave and Shockwave should be simple and straightforward; one is a truebeliver whose more loyal to the cause than it's leaders and the other is loyal to logic and only works for the Cons, becusce their okay with his unethical experiments.

I prefer the Marvel Shockwave. He wasn’t a scientist, but he was the leader of the Decepticons because it was logical.

It would be hard for me to go from the complex and deep characterization Soundwave got in the first IDW run and just have him be a simple, black-and-white sort of villain character now. Would definitely feel like an inferior version to me (I'm spoiled now :D ). Time will tell, though!

I like that Megatron sounds like he's actually part of the establishment, and isn't overtly fighting it (at least not yet) by running gladiator rings or writing polemics or something. Maybe this continuity will be Megatron super cop instead of Orion Pax super cop. If so, I'd legitimately be down for that. It's a backstory for Megatron that hasn't really been done before, certainly not with any prominent ones at any rate. So yeah, sounds like this continuity is doing just enough different that it'll stand out. But then again, these are only solicits, so who really knows?

I know you shouldn’t judge something by 3-sentence descriptions, but this SOUNDS even more boring then the last 5-7 years of going nowhere storytelling...

I just wish they'd jettison Windblade into the abyss already... but here's hoping for a good story, I suppose. Can't say I'm too confident though.
Probably not, and it's typically a bad idea to buy any new product with this sort of mindset.

Part of the reason old issues, such as your Detective Comics issue #27, are worth a lot of money these days is because they're limited in number - comics were a "childish" thing back in those days, with very few surviving intact, let alone in good condition because they were just a silly, relatively cheap story that most kids wouldn't think twice about keeping in pristine condition or, in plenty of cases, not just chucking them in the bin after they're done with the comic (or when having a clean-up when they're a bit older, etc).

This applies to things like rare and expensive trading cards and even Transformers toys too - the smaller the print run and the older they are, the less likely you'll find a good copy around these days.
But with people now in the collector mindset en masse these days, don't expect a brand new comic today to be worth a ton in the years to come.
Will the value go up? Sure. But is it really worth storing it in mint condition, getting it graded etc. for the future as some kind of investment? Probably not.

Here’s something I’ve been wondering about these comics. Couldn’t IDW have reset a little bit without doing a hard reboot? I was reading some interviews, and it sounded like one of their concerns was accessibility for new readers after thirteen years of continuity.

Take Marvel for instance. I know people get annoyed by it sometimes, but they have pretty decent jumping on points for new readers by launching stuff like All New Marvel NOW! or putting out solo series starting at #1. You don’t need to read 70+ years of comics to understand what’s going on.

Why couldn’t IDW finish a big crossover event and then refresh with new titles and spinoffs that are easy for newcomers to get into?

It’s kind of a shame that they had to fully reboot, but I guess Transformers always has tons of different continuities anyway. I wonder how long this one will last.

Well.. Marvel isn’t very good at it, IMO. Maybe I’m just getting old, but I’d much rather read my back issues /TPBs than to read the current books. And I’m someone who used to spend 30-50 a week on comics. The characters have changed so much that I don’t recognize most of them I think the last saga I read and really enjoyed was Superior Spider-Man. There are just way too many X-Men and Avengers to keep track of anymore.

So I can see why rebooting whole cloth is desirable for IDW so the writers can do whatever they want an not have to explain why a character isn’t dead/evil/heroic/gay anymore. Continuity is great, but it can also be a hindrance.

that was me too, I dropped out... 5-6 years ago now? the stories were just getting so bad and the replacement characters so blatant and obnoxious... reading a lot more 80s-early 90s (before everything unraveled post-Image) and I can't believe how much better most of the writing is. There's like 3-4x as much story in most issues...

Yeah, I agree, the continuity can get really messy after going on for so long. Would you prefer that they rebooted every decade or so with a new continuity/vision?

To be entirely fair, they did try and refresh the titles for the old continuity fairly recently, relaunching the main ongoing and MTMTE as Optimus Prime/Lost Light alongside all the other post-Revolution titles, but it clearly didn't work out for them.

You know, if Megatron starts the story as part of the security apparatus, that could be really interesting.

Adds new connotations to "Peace Through Tyranny"; suppose the dark side of Cybertronian society is that it IS fundamentally tyrannical to begin with?

So it could be a case of "Optimus wakes up to the nightmare that his reality actually is" while Megatron doubles down upholding it because it means peace and stability.

I freakin love this idea, especially with Optimus being the enlightened revolutionary. I’m kind of going to be disappointed if it doesn’t end up being this, dang it. That doesn’t just sound like good Transformers, that sounds like good quality science fiction in general.

    True.

I wonder how MTMTE played for a new reader. I would be confused as heck if I jumped in without knowing a lot about Transformers.

MTMTE actually did bring in a lot of new fans, especially among the teen/young adult demographic. From what I've heard it was a fairly good jumping-on point, but some people had trouble being able to visually distinguish all the different characters.

Decompressed stories (written for the trade) are another thing that caused me to lose interest. But that’s more recent (2000’s or so)...

Not sure. Every writer has his or her own vision for a book, as well as the editors. You also have 35 years worth of characters (80 for Marvel).
