We just got a notification from Comcast that our bill next month is going up to just over $200. We were paying $130. That's over a $70 increase. WTF? And they wonder why people are pirating.

    Anyone else notice this?

Are there any other service providers in your area? Call up Comcast customer retention and tell them you're going to switch your provider if they don't lower your bill. They'll try to give you some ridiculous song and dance and ask you a billion inane questions to make the interaction not worth your time, but be clear and consistent that you don't like their prices, and you will go elsewhere if they don't give you a price you like. If they don't help you, go do that.

Agreed that's a massive increase. Did they change the content of your service package at all?

We just got out of Comcast a couple months ago & we’re definitely not going back. Their rates are ridiculous. Just haven’t found a new service yet (living with the in-laws until the new place is done being built).

This is why I refuse to have cable TV service. Internet service can be expensive enough as it is. Having worked for a cable company, it's usually the game of "oh you were under a promotional rate" and whether or not they'd let you get another bundled deal. But you have to ask. But even then, nowadays, they may stick you with another year or two contract if you do get another "bundled deal." I'm not playing that game with them.

Yup. I had a similar rate increase from Comcast. I cut the cord. Not worth the hassle.

I wish these cable companies with do an a la carte option. Let me choose the channels I want and charge me based on the channels I actually use.

We're on Charter. Last October my bill jumped from $110 to $190. Dropped it down to just internet. Don't need that crap.

If they did, your rates could be worse. Simply put, Cable companies (even dish) negotiate with the channels what they have to pay to each channel to be able to have it on their cable network. So in order for the rates to be as "reasonable" as possible, it has to be under a packaged bundle. If...they worked it to where it's al-a-carte, then the channels would get less money IF they had to renegotiate similar terms. But you and I both know they won't. More than likely, the channels won't want their bottom line affected by this kind of change. So that means...prices/costs will go up. And for the consumer...no real savings. In fact, you probably will then wish for the bundled packages back (even though there might be a slew of channels you don't watch).

I only have high end internet through Comcast and it's $115/month. I then have PSVue for TV and Netflix for movies. Total is $170. Not great but not terrible.

That's not something most people don't know about. However, that being said, there are certain channels you can get al-a-carte through certain services:

Why a la carte TV still isn't happening

The game is changing...so we might get our "al-a-carte" in the future. Just not right now.

I saw a cable ad insulting sling so it must be hurting them to insult it! Also youtube has cable channels or you can get a digital tv antenna for $24 on amazon and get the local channels that way if you want them.

Nope, nothing changed and this $70 increase is WITH specialty discounts. Honestly, it's not worth the hassle. We'll make sure to watch this week's Flash and the New Years special to Doctor Who and return the equipment on Saturday. Maybe I'll go into the place with an eyepatch and tell them I'm taking up a new job as a pirate. :lol

The only shows I really watch on TV are Simpsons, iZombie (which is ending this year, so that won't matter), Better Call Saul, Legends of Tomorrow, Doctor Who, Arrow, Robot Chicken, and I was going to watch Power Rangers Beast Morphers, but screw it, most of those will be getting my official support when I buy them on BD. As such, the cost of cable is getting out of hand and not worth it.

I was with Cox Communication and the price for TV was just too much. We went with DirecTV for a year as a special. Once it ended, the bill jumped to $250. That was some major bullshit. I only channels I would watch regularly were Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney XD and USA.

I have Hulu and Netflix now for a fraction of the price Cox and DirecTV had.

I had a similar problem with comcast about 2 months ago.
I wanted to cancel but the customer service rep. suggested that I get the new customer rate if I stay with them.

I don't even know what Sling is, but at this point, since I'm going to have to pay for internet, I'd rather not even bother getting anything new.

I also can't do the dish stuff because my apartment balcony is facing the exact opposite position. Plus, one of my friends who had dish had it go out on him every time there was a snow storm, so yeah...

Sling is basically a la carte tv, but streaming using the internet. They have three packages with various channels: orange, blue and both combined. This list details which package features which channels: Sling TV Channel List and Review | Grounded Reason

I have orange because it comes with ESPN and TNT (and a ton of other channels). It's like $25 per month. Along with that, Netflix ($12), Hulu ($8) and HBO Now, which is free with my AT&T phone service, I don't need regular tv anymore. I got sick of the merry-go-round every 6 months with the cable company constantly raising my rates and then trying to coerce me into signing a long-term deal that heavily penalizes you if you cancel before the contract expires.
