That's the slippery slope of including relationships in this type of fiction.

I don't think anyone has a problem with a little romance being in the fiction. The problem is the weirdos that want full-on robo-sex. That's gross.

 

Nice for the closure on a few things, but sorry James, you really did torpedo your whole book by chickening out on Chromedome's secret. It shows how much you forgot why the fandom fell in love with your book in the first place.

 

I really like the Chromedome/Rewind original plot. In fact, I can see the shape of it "missing" from the finished book now that he points it out. But I also don't see how the hell Roberts could have fit it in there. The ending of LL was just stuuuuuuffed. Scavengers/Pregnant Grimlock story, Mederi, the Guiding Hand, the need to wrap up Megatron and the Functionists... really, he would have had to have more issues.

 

And didn't someone mention that Robert's had an entire year to revise and cut down on the story?

 

To be fair to Roberts, after reading all of the plans he originally intended to have it’s a miracle he got as much in as he did. Maybe he was naive in terms of how long he thought he had, but I would be hard pressed to figure out what to chop once I hit issue 12 and all these other subplots or stories.

 

The news of cancellation came a little too late, but I would've ditched the maudlin Cygate break-up and reunion (they've already both come back from near-death) and had Rewind 1 come back in the issue where they're preparing to leave NecroWorld. Then it would have occupied some pages in the inside-Skip issue and forced out some of the worst parts of that issue - the 'canoodling' joke, Rewind getting accidentally slashed by Cyclonus (in a pretty unconvincing lunge) - and resolved itself during the Mederi arc, which seemed pretty empty, tbh.

 

Either that or could have been a quick mention in MTMTE 53 when he's doing the surgery on the pet, could have included a line like "I'm sorry, I didn't know at the time. Prowl told me much later, and I was afraid you'd stop loving me if I fessed up" or maybe we could have gotten it during the "everyone gets closure" scene in the Everlasting Voices story. To be honest, I could take or leave the "Rewind #1 comes back" plot.

I don't think you comprehend how absolutely short a time 12 issues is in a comic story running monthly, especially when- based off of the original plans- he had to cut out over half of it. It really is amazing he was able to keep in as much as he did, and even then it felt greatly compressed.

Also, everybody saying that it would've been better if it hadn't got cut short. One, this isn't even new in the TF series. Two, Considering that most of the issues the book was having where always here to begin with, having it gone longer would just made those faults even more apparent.

 

I really miss the day when this forum wasn't full of people complaining about relationships or other personal bugaboos and that different fans like stuff they don't like and treating that as some huge negative thing (ironically being super-over dramatic about) and general toxicity about the comic. It occurred to me recently that, well, it's a different, less-welcoming crowd mix that's harder to discuss with than we had a year or two back.

Also? Friggin' Beast Wars, romance was huge in that. Complainers don't even know jack about transformers history.

Yes. If someone doesn't like it now, they probably weren't going to like the same person with more time - and it's also kinda weird that they didn't dislike it earlier on because some of the biggest dramatic moments in S1 involved this stuff.

 

I think that oversimplification is to the point that it mischaracterizes the problems that people had with the later issues of MTMTE and LL. No one had a problem with Chromedome and Rewind because that was a compelling and interesting story (yes, a few people did. The outliers do not prove the point). People thought the relationship with Lug and Anode felt forced. I wouldn't say either is necessarily bad. Just that the former had a lot more room to be developed. The latter didn't, and because of that the entire dynamic was off.

The relationships themselves were never bad it's when said relationships overtook the entire premise to the detriment of the rest of the story that the problems starting happening.

Personally, I love the relationship between BlackArachnia and Silverbolt. That was a fun quirky thing. I can say that if every episode focused on their relationship, I would have found that show to be pretty boring. Nuance.

 

Oh god, I just got flashbacks to Ross and Rachel. I remember marathoning Friends while recovering from surgery and every episode had something about their relationship. Every single one. The one time I thought I'd found an episode that didn't, it was immediately debunked by a scene in which Rachel realizes she still has feelings for Ross.

Ross and Rachel should be the goddamn posterchild for how not to do a romance, especially a long-running one. It was so tedious, unhealthy and made the characters into unlikeable assholes who never fixed their problems and are doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again, which is no doubt going to be fun for their kids.

 

That's it exactly. Too much of that stuff devalues the special moments. The romance between Chromedome and Rewind was handled masterfully. It had a lot going for it. I remember when rewind 1 died. You could feel the difference in the way the characters interacted. Then, when Rewind 2 wad found, you could see the hope and longing Chromedome had for him.

With Anode she is just hallucinating for half the time and then when she resurrects her long lost love she barely acts any different and the relationship goes back to what it was before said resurrection. Why even include it? It was meaningless.

 

In all fairness, it's always been something. There used to be screeching about FIRRIB/RIBFIR, whether Unicron could beat the Death Star, TRUKK NOT MUNKY and in some insane cases whether G1 Decepticons were really bad guys or zOMG A SUPPRESSED MINORITY. TF relationships are just new and shiny and yet another gem to add to the TF "Crown of Complaining".

We'll get over it and then start complaining about something else in about 10 years. Maybe someone will go balls out and make Optimus a fighter jet with a stutter. That'll really ruffle some feathers.
