I haven’t been up there in a few years...but at that time, you could walk all around it. It is a huge sumbitch.
I wanted to be a pilot after seeing Top Gun (and who didn't?) but when I took some tests for Reserves, my mathematics scores weren't good enough. I could have done plenty of other things cos my scores were good, but I lacked the higher requirements for pilots. Fitness wasn't great either but that they and I could have fixed.
oh don't worry Wright-Patterson is the home of the Air Force foreign technology office. So not even counting the rumors of alien technology and bodies under Hangar 18 there are loads of foreign fighter jet technology such as Migs and current Generations Russian flankers. Even mock-ups of the new Chinese supposed stealth fighter. As far as my favorite airframes I got say it's the AC 130 spooky AKA Puff the Magic Dragon. AC-130 has a minimum of three bofors 40mm mm grenade gunsguns different machine gun chain gun variations as well as a 105 millimeter mean gun that was originally on the first model of the Abrams tank. My ass was saved by one of these during a firefight
It's amazing how long some aircraft serve. The AC-130 and the B-52 are both from the Cold War, and we still use 'em.
I'm a Russian-American so my view is a little biased, here's my top three favorite aircraft and the my favorite above all. Sukhoi 34 Flanker A technologically impressive and seriously awesome looking machine. I love seeing the blue beasts. F/A-18 Hornet "Blue Angel" variant I loved seeing these on TV as a kid and would always beg to go to airshows where the Angels were performing. I saw them, albeit in a video, fly past the top tip of the Sears tower one time with the thunderous roar of the Hornet's engines shaking windows and wowing people on the streets. I have a soft spot for anything Navy, but the Angels are my favorite thing that the Navy has produced, as far as unit specifics go. Sukhoi 57 Fighter The Sukhoi 57 represents Russia's leap into the next generation of fighter aircraft, and technologically it is on par with an F/A-18 Fighter, or depending on the roll, an F-22 Raptor. But the One that takes the cake, the one above all in aerospace for me, is: The F-14 Tomcat The Tomcat is one of my absolute favorite aircraft ever produced due to the movie "Top Gun". I've loved these planes for a few years now and would give anything to sit in the cockpit of one. Absolutely beastly machines.
I fell for the F14Tomcat after watching Final Countdown as i was a big fan of birds of prey (or Raptors) at the time and the landing shot made it sound like an eagle or something when moved anything and lowered gear and the canopy on both sides opposite where the hud goes looked like eyes i was hooked on the tomcat eversince Even though i do not know them in technical ways but, i like the looks of the.... F14 Tomcat F22 Raptor F35 Lightning II (mostly A and B) Jas 39 Gripen SU 57 Next best F15 Eagle F16 Falcon F18 Hornet Su37 Terminator (according to ace combat) Su35 ? Su27 ? And that just fighter aircraft
Don't forget the A-10 Thunderbolt II, aka Warthog, aka Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt. Long in the tooth but still packs a mean bite that ground-pounders love. The sound it makes is music to their ears. Had the chance to see these up close when I was over in the desert.
The A-10 can carry 16,000 pounds of external ordinance in addition to the Gau-8 in its nose. Add that arsenal to the survivability of the platform in combat and you can see why the AF has YET to find an aircraft capable of replacing it. Counterpoint: I hate the Crash-hawk. That chopper can rot for all I care. I'd rather go up in a UH-1H.
I'm not an aircraft aficionado, but I always loved the design of an F-117 nighthawk. But since the F22s and B2s can do recon and guided bomb drops with less maintenance, they were retired, sadly...
I never saw the B2 close up, but I did see an entire Air Wing of B1-Bs - Like 5 feet away in Qatar. Those are beautiful planes.
The Rockwell Bomber? Yeah, that's a sexy beast. I always thought if you were doing a reinvention of the Aerialbots then that would be a shoe-in for Silverbolt what with Concord literally peeling off the runway in a ball of fire.
Yup with swing wing geometry just like the F-14. Much bigger in person than you would expect, even for it being a supersonic nuclear capable bomber.
